London still out of fuel - because it doesn't vote Tory

istherelifeafter40 · 01/10/2021 00:07

Where I live, South London, it is still impossible to get fuel. Most petrol stations are closed, the ones that are open have hours-long queues. The queueing cars are blocking the roads, it's a nightmare.

Every news outlet keeps saying the crisis is easing. I don't see any signs of that. It's pure gaslighting. I get it, media try not to report shortages in order not to cause shortages, but I'd like some actual information, not lies?

What I think is that the Tory government will prioritise, in terms of fixing the supply chain breakdowns, the areas of the country that vote Tory, and will abandon metropolitan areas that increasingly shift to the left in their voting patterns.

AIBU - Tory don't care about London - or Manchester (anyone?); it's not their base
YANBU - where there is fuel and where there isn't is completely random

I keep reading so many posts on here and other places where Londoners are desperate to make themselves out as being hard done by. It’s very weird.

Applesonthelawn · 01/10/2021 08:51

That is a ridiculous OP. Of course there is no plan to target some areas over others. It's hard enough to get a plan together at all, let alone one with that level of nuance.

SantiagoSky · 01/10/2021 08:59

Look OP, the Tory government has no control over any of this. That's the main problem.

Kindertonguehappierlife · 01/10/2021 09:03

Awwww poor Londoner thinks London is bottom of the priority list for the government

Makes a bloody change

QueeniesCroft · 01/10/2021 09:11

My area is SNP through and through, but we don't have any shortages at all. That isn't because of the government, it's because so little of the journey to the fuel pumps is by road (mostly tanker and then a short raod journey).

onlychildhamster · 01/10/2021 09:19

I am in London and my life has (so far) been in affected by the petrol shortage. DH commuting to canary wharf daily by tube. It's not just London that has petrol shortage, it's also the SE. My conclusion is that it's not just the population density, it's also the percentage of people with disposable income that are able top top up a full tank at a moment's notice.

In London, if you are poor, the first thing you give up is the car. In the north, that isn't an option..I read here on Mumsnet about people who wait for payday to refuel. All the car drivers I know in north London can refuel any time any day.

onlychildhamster · 01/10/2021 09:23

*my life has not been affected by the petrol shortage

DeclineandFall · 01/10/2021 09:34

I think if this government could direct all the fuel supplies to Tory seats they absolutely would, without any qualms. However they have no clue how to do anything except make a bad situation worse.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 01/10/2021 09:34

Tory safe seat…if there isnt a queue at a petrol station it’s because its run out of fuel

Justcallmebebes · 01/10/2021 09:36

I live in a County that has never been Labour, ever. We have no petrol. Go figure

AnnPerkins · 01/10/2021 09:51

The Times reports today that a Whitehall analysis shows London, the southeast, the northwest, and the west and east Midlands currently have levels of less than 20 per cent. So a bit more than just London.

Motorists in fuel shortage areas see red over claims crisis is easing

Toomanyradishes · 01/10/2021 10:09

I love the idea that a tory government has prioritised little towns and villages in north east wales over london... unfortunately this probanly would also be a harbinger of the apocalypse so I think we are safe.

I also love the idea that 'up north' everyone is so poor they cant afford fuel which is why there isnt as much of a problem, maybe someone wants to let all the rich footballers etc know they officially have no money if the live north of birmingham. Poorer londoners meanwhile are simultaneously paying excessivly high rents but also rich enough to refuel whenever they want, makes sense...

Cuddlyrottweiler · 01/10/2021 10:11

We're fine and we're definitely not a tory area! Areas with higher demand and areas with fewer stations will have more issues than those with less demand and more stations.

ElsieMc · 01/10/2021 10:22

In a new tory area ie usually Labour seat lost at last election. In the NW, the queues have eased since Tuesday in a smallish working class town. Very rural areas for example have struggled because they have one petrol station and they do run out.

The news is accurate for us but high density population areas are still suffering it is quite clear. Still people asking on selling sites where to go for fuel, the only issue here has been lack of diesel.

Macncheeseballs · 01/10/2021 10:35

Bstshitcrazywomen, but the point is in places like London, they are trying to get people out of cars and try other ways of getting around. We need to start looking at a less car centric future

Buttons294749 · 01/10/2021 10:50

More people and fewer stations.

And she 🤣🤣🤣 that we can just use public transport to get where we are going, if you are going in or out of central then yes, if you are going fr on borough to borough then no. I hate driving, I would love to be able to use the train to get to DS school (and so would he!)

LakieLady · 01/10/2021 10:54

@jessycake

We have no fuel where I live , I think population density play a large part
I live in a town of approx 20,000 in a predominantly rural area. We don't have any, there are 2 petrol stations in town and another 4 within a couple of miles of town.

All closed last night, and we have a Tory MP.

Battytwatty · 01/10/2021 10:58

Maybe Tory areas have no petrol because of the mindset of the Tory voters ie greedy, selfish etc lol

onlychildhamster · 01/10/2021 11:06

@Toomanyradishes poorest areas in London esp in the inner city have less than 40% of people owning cars. It's just not a necessity, it's a luxury. Which is why less dense areas in the SE have no petrol either..

Footballers are a very tiny percentage of the population.

Dbank · 01/10/2021 11:10

This takes paranoia to a new level.

Brainwave89 · 01/10/2021 11:46

You give this government too much credit in assuming it could determine where shortages occur. I live in solidly Tory Norfolk, and we still have significant issues with getting diesel and petrol. It is a bit better outside of urban areas, which is consistent with everywhere else.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/10/2021 14:12

@Macncheeseballs

As a friend pointed out to me, the outlying part of London where I live is 'London' in borough name only, and really would be better compared to any town, rather than the capital. If people are expected to cycle here, then they should be in Godalming or Hemel Hempstead. Sometimes it's not practical. I walk, I quite enjoy it.
jay55 · 01/10/2021 14:16

I'm in the very red tower hamlets and there was petrol and diesel at Asda this morning.

madisonbridges · 01/10/2021 14:19

Reading the posts here from tory and labour strongholds, what this thread is saying is that the petrol companies are actually prioritising labour voting areas.

Undisclosedlocation · 01/10/2021 14:34

A. The government is not in charge of the tanker deliveries
B. Even if they were, they wouldn’t have anything to gain by bringing the capital to a halt for longer than the rest of the country
C. Even if A and B did not prove true, the government are too f*cking incompetent to pull off what you are suggesting
