London still out of fuel - because it doesn't vote Tory

Where I live, South London, it is still impossible to get fuel. Most petrol stations are closed, the ones that are open have hours-long queues. The queueing cars are blocking the roads, it's a nightmare.

Every news outlet keeps saying the crisis is easing. I don't see any signs of that. It's pure gaslighting. I get it, media try not to report shortages in order not to cause shortages, but I'd like some actual information, not lies?

What I think is that the Tory government will prioritise, in terms of fixing the supply chain breakdowns, the areas of the country that vote Tory, and will abandon metropolitan areas that increasingly shift to the left in their voting patterns.

AIBU - Tory don't care about London - or Manchester (anyone?); it's not their base
YANBU - where there is fuel and where there isn't is completely random

Londoner, in a key marginal.

I would have thought that if the government was directing the companies to prioritise deliveries according to likely future voting, there wouldn't be so many shortages round here.

The 'Tory flagship' councils (the poster boys of low council tax) are in London too.

I really don't see how the government would achieve control over the petrol companies, such that they can direct the detail of distribution schedules. What's the (conspiracy?) theory on that?

KaptainKaveman · 01/10/2021 06:51

Posh-ish bit of North London here.

no petrol.

NotQuiteUsual · 01/10/2021 06:51

I'm up north in very firm labour territory, we've not had shortages apart from on Sunday. Business as usual here.

Mybalconyiscracking · 01/10/2021 06:54

Oh stop being so silly!
Pure paranoia!

ChristmasWithDC · 01/10/2021 06:55

My mum lives in Tory central and there’s no petrol. I’m in a Labour constituency and it’s fine here.

Iggly · 01/10/2021 06:56

They would if they could, but luckily they can’t.

They do it with things like local authority funding etc. But luckily petrol is not in their hands thank fuck.

rwalker · 01/10/2021 06:57

I'm in the north and it's pissing it down presume thats because we're in a labour area .

SpacemanDad · 01/10/2021 06:57

Scotland hasn’t voted Tory for eighty years and we’re fine for fuel thanks. I imagine the reason that London is still experiencing issues is down to population density and the fact most Londoners are mental.

SummerStressing · 01/10/2021 07:06

Not sure about the Tory thing. But yes to gaslighting! This is not all due to panic buying at all. All this patronising bollocks of ‘it’s all your fault you silly fusspots’ is starting to really annoy me.
DH was up at 6am on the hunt and couldn’t find any (SE) and now had to make a two hour train and bus journey to work.

GivenchyDahhling · 01/10/2021 07:09

The only dodgy voting here is your AIBU question which makes no sense and I think is designed to make more people in the poll say YANBU.

YABU, by the way. By normal standards; not what you specify in the post.

Ifailed · 01/10/2021 07:10

If London is out of fuel its population can use the excellent and heavily subsidised public transport

Prior to Covid it was self-funded. The government have loaned TfL money to keep it going, they will have to pay it back.

Totallydefeated · 01/10/2021 07:14

I think you’re crediting the Government with too much ability to carry out a plan tbh.

THIS. It’s just very densely populated.

Porfre · 01/10/2021 07:17

Yanbu that the crisis is still ongoing.

But I would have thought London would have had priority especially because it is the centre of all the news for the country.
We up here get forgotten frequently. I think if it had just been the North it might not have even made the news in the first place.

Spudlet · 01/10/2021 07:18

You could nail a blue rosette to a fence post around here and people would vote for it. In fact, having watched the footage of our mp making a speech, I do believe they may have done just that. The local Facebook pages are still full of people dithering over where to go for diesel. There are far fewer people here, but also not much in the way of public transport, so the need for fuel is a bit more pressing. At least London has a decent public transport network 🤷‍♀️

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 01/10/2021 07:18

OP - your voting system is confusing! I voted YABU, because you are being Unreasonable. The idea that the current government could plan more than a chimpanzee's tea party, never mind conspire and prioritise fuel for their voters, is amusing.

But according to your voting system, I should have voted YANBU 🤔🙄

VivienScott · 01/10/2021 07:20

I’m not in London, I’m in a Tory held seat and there are 4 petrol stations within 5 miles of where I live and tuesday/Wednesday none had any fuel for at least 36 hours, they all got restocked yesterday and have none today. I’d say we’re pretty hard done by here as well if fuel is the measure.

fluffythedragonslayer · 01/10/2021 07:22

I live in a Ultra Safe Tory Seat place. No petrol here.
London is worse because they have more people and less petrol stations. It's not some wild government conspiracy, it's government incompetence, media manipulation, Brexit, and the inherent selfishness and stupidity of people.

torquewench · 01/10/2021 07:23

@MiddleEasternMummy

I live in Liverpool . This is a staunch labour supporting city . Absolutely no problem getting fuel !!
So do I. The 3 petrol stations that I pass en route to work in town are closed because they have no fuel, and have been all week.
Appuskidu · 01/10/2021 07:25

South East Tory town here. No petrol to be found.

SpeakingFranglais · 01/10/2021 07:26

*Sorry, are you seriously saying the government doesn’t care about London? You think London is down towards the bottom of the list compared to other cities in the UK? Are you for real?

Exactly, they think they are the only ones that exist for everything.

HeyDuddy · 01/10/2021 07:26

I live on an island off the coast of Scotland. We are always affected by shortages as we’re harder to access but not this time. You know why? Because people aren’t behaving like arseholes. No panic buying so plenty of petrol.

CaptainChannel · 01/10/2021 07:26

I live in a true blue area in the South East and there is no fuel to be had, it's chaos.
I don't think it's anything to do with that.

HeyDuddy · 01/10/2021 07:27

And we definitely don’t vote Tory here (with the exception of a few incomes)!

MeanderingGently · 01/10/2021 07:27

I'm in a rural area of East Midlands, market town is without petrol, one delivery the other day and folk queuing all night, now that petrol has gone. We haven't any more.
High proportion of Tory voters here. Honestly, what fuel you have/have not really isn't much to do with how the population voted!

I used to live down south, the difference in population size and services is HUGE. I lived west of London (just outside M25 zone) and we regularly ran out of fuel on a normal week simply becaase there were so many people and so many folk commuting (M25, M4, M3), plus car usage and ownership was very high. London and the south east are very crowded but also feature highly in the news as the country is still London-centric in it's thinking.

Up here in the east midlands we get very little; on the other hand, we don't have a high population and many areas are rural so that affects goods and services and out access to these things. It's true for petrol as well as any other deliveries affecting the country as a whole.

catzfur · 01/10/2021 07:29

The fuel situation is dire in Grant Shapps constituency.
