To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

Heels are a bit old fashioned now. The right paor can make my legs look longer but i don't want to totter around any more.

Went to a wedding wearing my only pair of heels...most women wete in flats.

Give me trainers, DMs, flatforms and at a push a low wedge.

I would ask why do heels define “glamour”, and why do we need to put aside our comfort in order to achieve it?

Personally I think people can look brilliant without heels, and often the only thing i think about when i see someone in heels is how much discomfort they must be in.

WandaVision2 · 30/09/2021 13:14

I’ve found it seems to be the older ladies that wear heels now. They’ve become quite dated

Flats aren't just trainers...

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 30/09/2021 13:15

Yes @malificent7 I love all of these too. But I do still love a pair of heels.

I've never worn heels on principle. Why make it harder to walk/run?

I think it was Oscar de all Renta who said he made shoes that would make women feel as if they had a man walking behind them; many women commented that they would feel endangered, and want to run.

Stellaris22 · 30/09/2021 13:16

I think a lot of women have realised that heels are just unnecessary now and would rather not suffer foot issues for fashion. As a one off I'm sure it's fine. But if you do lots of walking then having suitable shoes is far more important.

I wear my walking shoes everywhere and my feet have never been better. I'm glad the need for women to wear heels has ended.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 30/09/2021 13:17

I'd rather not knacker my feet and my back just so I can totter around on spikes

But so what if others don't like them? You do, so wear them. It doesn't matter if you're the only person in the world wearing them!

Insert1x20p · 30/09/2021 13:17

Heels have been declining for years. I think covid just finished them off. I rarely see young women wearing them now unless v obviously on a big night out/ black tie.

I see it as a positive.

SisterBeaverhausen · 30/09/2021 13:17

Never worn heels in my life. I still dress up glamour is what you make it

CaptainThe95thRifles · 30/09/2021 13:20

Of course you're not unreasonable to want to keep wearing heels yourself, but you're completely unreasonable to think it's your business what other people, "ladies" or otherwise, are wearing.

SinoohXaenaHide · 30/09/2021 13:21

They are really bad for your feet, and can do you all sorts or damage, and make it difficult to walk up and down stairs safely. I wore heels when I was in my 20s as I thought it was expected and I didn't feel I could rebel. I don't just wear trainers though, I have various comfortable and supportive lace-up flat shoes suitable for various levels of formality.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/09/2021 13:21

Not being able to walk properly is the antithesis of glamour and sophistication IMO.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 30/09/2021 13:21

I have one pair of heels that used to be comfortable and now they're not so ill never wear heels again.
You do you, nothing against women wearing heels but I want to be comfortable

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2021 13:22

Wear what you like. Others will do the same.

Problem solved Smile

Yoursaintlyglowofconcern · 30/09/2021 13:23

I’ve never worn heels either. They’re bad for feet and impractical.

Sparklesocks · 30/09/2021 13:24

They’ll always be around in some form I’m sure. But there are so many choices now with a range of comfort. It’s not like the choice is either heels or trainers - you can get wedges, boots etc. A stiletto isn’t the only indicator of looking out together.

Sparklesocks · 30/09/2021 13:24

*put

TheSpiral · 30/09/2021 13:24

I was out the other evening in London and was struck by how few women were wearing heels - I was looking especially because I had noticed and must have seen one or two at the most. I was wearing trainers because it’s a walk to the station, but had taken heels to change into - but didn’t bother in the end.
Having said that I was out in my own town more recently and there were many more heels to be seen - still fewer than before though.

LaBellina · 30/09/2021 13:25

My mother’s friend wore heels all her life and is now suffering the consequences: problems with her feet and her back.
She warned her daughters and me too to wear them on a minimum basis.

HidingFromDD · 30/09/2021 13:26

I realised last week that the painful bunion I’d started growing last year has now gone completely. That’s what a year of wfh and padding around barefoot did. I don’t think I’ll be wearing them again, cba

montysma1 · 30/09/2021 13:28

I do think they look nicer but I just can't tolerate them now. Not even a lowish chunky one.
At a push I will do platform wedges as your foot isn't at an angle. But really I should just chuck out my heels as I can't last 5 minutes.
Don't know how I ever did really.

Cascascascas · 30/09/2021 13:29

@wouldntmindbeingmrsw

I am with you oP
Can’t wait to get in to opaques short skirt and boots

thevassal · 30/09/2021 13:29

I would say there's still a place for a mid heeled boot - particularly in winter where its quite nice to have a bit of distance and some waterproof leather between you and a puddle rather than a white/suede trainer getting soaked! Possible a comfy wedge sandal of dressing up too. But agree that not many people wear the proper tottering heels anymore.

I imagine like any other trend this will reverse at some point and in 5 to 10 years time generation alpha will be rolling their eyes at gen z and the crop top/bring back the 90s/nice dress and trainers style will die out. 2030 could see the revival of the skinny jean and heels!
