To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

@namechangetheworld

I love a pair of heeled boots in the winter, they look much nicer on my stubby legs than flats, and smarter too. I've never found them remotely uncomfortable, it's not like I'm running a marathon in them or anything.

I can't stand the current trend for dresses and trainers. It always looks ridiculous to me and, and I'm only in my early 30s. Hoping it dies a quick death soon.

I'm with you on this! I feel so much more streamlined and at least a dress size smaller when I'm wearing a mid heel. Dresses and trainers are a no no for me too! Think they suit young women and the 'grunge' or festival look, but that's it!!!
RampantIvy · 02/10/2021 09:40

I wear flats 99.99% of the time, but I agree that shoes with heels just look more elegant than trainers. I just can't wear heels comfortably though.

Given all the "heels are so old fashioned" threads on MN, I was surprised at the number of women wearing heels when I was in the office the other week. I think everyone was just so pleased to be able to dress up a bit after slobbing around at home in comfortable clothes and footwear.

mamabear715 · 02/10/2021 10:50

It's just fashion, not a law!
I could run for buses in huge platforms back in the day, now, with a hip complaint, it's flip flops on nice days and boots with a small heel if cold or wet. (Btw User1471..forgot the rest! my physio told me that it's much easier for us to walk with a small heel than flat - throws you forward slightly if you have hip problems.)
Am also happy to be called a lady. Or a woman. I am both. Chill!

pollymere · 02/10/2021 11:01

I wear what I want! I'm not tall and heels make me feel taller and thinner (they will give this illusion). I wear heels of all heights still as well as flats. One thing I've noticed trying to buy new shoes is that heels seem to be three inch rather than two which is totally impractical to wear all day so I might have to give up heels once my shoes wear out.

PlonkyWillyWonky · 02/10/2021 11:38

i love my heels , they make me feel good

BookishKitten · 02/10/2021 12:16

Very few heels are made to be comfortable and not damage your joints and spine. It is very hard to find a pair of sensible heels that have those qualities and don’t cost the equivalent of a small rent payment.
I’ve always walked a lot during commutes to work and use public transport in London and I just find heels not practical or plain dangerous in wet weather.
But what did it for me was being harassed in the street one early evening and I couldn’t run properly in heels. I did consider taking them off but they had a strap with a buckle so I couldn’t stop. I felt terrible after that incident.
I’ve been wearing flat shoes exclusively for about 7 years now and I can be stylish and comfortable. Flat shoes have come a looooong way.

@Chandimum “ Think they suit young women and the 'grunge' or festival look, but that's it!!!”

I disagree. I’m 62, haven’t worn heels for about 20 years and frequently wear dresses and trainers. I’m often told I look good and I know they suit me perfectly well!

LovelyIssues · 02/10/2021 15:22

I honestly don't know anyone who wears heels anymore

33goingon64 · 02/10/2021 20:19

I never ever wear heels, but then I'm not a lady so not sure if I qualify to comment. Personally I think it's FAB that women are going for comfort and practicality over 'glamour' and fetishised ideas of what sexiness is. But each to their own - I don't think anyone's stopping you wearing heels if that's what you want to do. Why do you care what others wear anyway? Just wear what you like.

Redjimjams · 02/10/2021 20:32

My daughters wear boots with solid heels if they're dressing up to go out (20s) Otherwise it's trainers/flat boots.
I am very much for comfort over style so a low heeled boot is as good as it gets for me, and only if I'm not walking far.
I don't usually look at people's feet so I've no idea what's in fashion and what's not.

Misty333 · 02/10/2021 21:48

Getting older wore heals on a night out as always wore flats during the week so it felt special. But can’t wear stilettos now, but on special occasions do wear a wedge heal as easy to walk in 😁

Br1256 · 02/10/2021 21:54

Can anyone recommend supportive shoes for a broad foot…bunions. I am waiting for a knee/hip replacement and finding walking painful anyway

Thanks

Sketchers have memory foam insoles and you can get them in wide fit. Some are less trainer like and look more shoe type in design.

Maybe not be what you’re after, but worth a look just in case Smile

YesPleaseMary · 04/10/2021 22:19

Heels make me think of the Duchess of Cambridge. My feet are too small to wear them though, anything over a two inch heel and I’m on tiptoes. Agree that they are quite dated now.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 04/10/2021 22:35

The fact this is the second thread on heels being unfashionable on MN recently makes me believe heels are about to make a big comeback!

If I told my nieces the majority of women on MN rated heels as unfashionable, they’d be on the Kurt Keiger website buying some serious heels!

Yogsgirl · 05/10/2021 07:18

Being 'dated' is only ever a temporary state of fashion! It's cyclical!

But actually I'm not sure heels being dated is even true- it's only stilettos which seem out- the shops are full of very high block heels.

!6 year old dd's prom was all really high block heels- not a flat in sight except for about two girls in trainers with their prom dress. Even a couple of the boys wore heels!

londonrach · 05/10/2021 07:38

Flats doesn't mean trainers. As for heels it's only old ladies who wear them. Ive never worn them and don't know anyone who does. Maybe the circle I mix with. Heels are not glamour. They weapon of torture.

RampantIvy · 05/10/2021 08:01

Shouldn't you be on the school bus now? I assume you are a teenager with such ageist claptrap Hmm

I don't wear heels either, but the last time I saw girls wearing very high heels was at a party a couple of months ago, and they were all in their 20s.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 08:28

I've never worn heels. Goodness knows how anyone manages to walk in them. I might have an inch or so on boots but that's it.

RealBecca · 05/10/2021 09:13

I think men find them sexy and i used to feel glamorous wearing them. Now i have no interest whatsoever in being attractive to a man and feel rebellious by not making myself a pretty thing to look at. So thats why i never wear them.

RealBecca · 05/10/2021 09:14

I think some women are feeling angry with the Sarah Everard and other murders and don't want to be attractive to men, much less be something pretty for them to look at.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 05/10/2021 10:00

I don't have a clue (or give a shit) what's in fashion or on trend. Wear what you like.

I have heels and wear them from time to time at events but generally speaking I prefer not contorting my feet so stick to flats. Can't remember the last time I wore trainers though.

EerieSilence · 05/10/2021 11:24

I donated most of my high heels and I'm sticking with boots - platform or flat. Have no problem pairing them with a nice dress or a long floaty skirt. It's more comfortable this way and it's better for my joints and back. Stiletto heels are uncomfortable and long-term really bad for anyone.

chaosmaker · 05/10/2021 19:58

@userxx

I love heels and walk so much better in them.
If you've always worn heels, have you damaged your calf muscles? My friends ex wife always wore heels to the point that she could not put her heels down as her calf muscles had shortened so much.

I hate heels. I like how they look on a superficial level but fashion is never ever worth pain or damaging your body.

chaosmaker · 05/10/2021 20:00

Also fashion used to have men in heels. Much better I think if there have to even be heels at all. Hate that the women in ballroom have to dance in poxy heels.
