To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

I think spikey heels look dated and really uncomfortable but I don’t mind low rise wedges or chunky heels.
A lot of women look uncomfortable in them and walk oddly.
I’m slim but don’t have long legs and wearing heels would probably make my legs look better but I don’t care enough to want to wear them.

I think dresses worn with trainers looks nice.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/09/2021 14:47

I was a young adult in the 80’s and 90’s. Flat chunky shoes were the thing then.

I’m 57, never worn heels. I prefer the ‘bover’ boot look.

Flat forms and chunky.

cheesegloriouscheeseyum · 30/09/2021 14:48

Personally I've only ever worn proper heels if I'm going to a wedding or similar occasion, and then they'd be a platform shoe as I can't manage really high shoes.
Where I live / in my circle of friends heels have never been "in" anyway. Maybe a small kitten or wedge for a party. But, lots of my school friends (they live up north but I don't think it'll just be a northern thing) would feels completely underdressed on a night out of they weren't wearing high strappy shoes or sandals.

Bontanics · 30/09/2021 14:48

I wore a pair of heels once on a night out when I was 18. Never did it again. Stupid fucking torture devices.

ddl1 · 30/09/2021 14:48

You should wear what you want and feel good in!

But not everyone should or even can wear heels. I have co-ordination difficulties which put me in great danger of falls if I wear heels, so I didn't wear them even when they were very fashionable. I would be absolutely unable to take a job or attend an event if heels were required. I know other people who are in a similar position due to very painful foot problems.

Wazzzzzzzup · 30/09/2021 14:49

There is no need to fight. There is a compromise between heels and trainers.

Trainers with heels!

I've not been "out out" for years. What are women wearing these days?
It used to be short dress and high heels in my day. Shows how long it's been 🙈

ginghamstarfish · 30/09/2021 14:52

It's about time heels disappeared off the scene, same for anything else that's uncomfortable and damaging to wear. Happened with corsets ...

FlemishHorse · 30/09/2021 14:52

Not all fashion comes round again.
We look back at Victorian tight-laced corsets and can’t believe women put up with them. They actually damaged internal organs to create a fashionable “wasp waist”. In a hundred years or so people will think the same about stilettos.

Northernlass99 · 30/09/2021 14:53

No way am I ever wearing heels, Spanx, tight dresses, flappy-open wrap dresses or anything uncomfortable again! Im not even bothering with wearing trainers but taking heels to change into at work. Went into the office yesterday for a meeting and out of 40 women just one was wearing heels. Seems OK to wear smart trainers even in a senior team meeting.

ScumbagDave · 30/09/2021 14:53

Can't wear heels! Anyway, I'm quite tall, so don't need or want any more height. I like them on other people though. My teeny granny used to wear them every single day. Until she was about 80! She could honestly walk in them fine. Think she'd shortened her calves so much that she felt odd in flats.

ScumbagDave · 30/09/2021 14:54

Haven't worn a bra with underwire in it for quite some time either! Shocker - my boobs look fine. Who knew?

Wazzzzzzzup · 30/09/2021 14:56

Depends. Last time (few times over last months) i saw good combo. Some had crazy heels, some had nice trainers or canvas shoes, not many ballerina style shoes things. Good balance overall. Trousers, dresses... Looks like all is fine now. Good times. Good times.
JayDot500 · 30/09/2021 14:59

They'll be back. As soon as they are recognised as 'out' someone will bring them in.

Do you.

Tal45 · 30/09/2021 15:01

No heels and no bra here, I'm at an age where comfort is way more important than anything else.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 30/09/2021 15:03

Blocky heels and platforms have been quite fashionable recently.

Stilettos were old-fashioned in my youth too.

MrsDThomas · 30/09/2021 15:03

I wear trainers for running. Otherwise its boots/heels. I once wore ballet pumps and my calves aches for days. My summer sandals have sone kind of heels.

felulageller · 30/09/2021 15:03

Let's leave heels as a 20th century relic and only gasp at them in museums from now on.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 30/09/2021 15:03

@wouldntmindbeingmrsw

Don't get me wrong ( maybe I should have explained more) I don't wear them everyday. Just on an evening out, or a lunch date with friends. The rest of the time, it DMs, trainers etc. Thanks for sharing your comments.

@CaptainThe95thRifles I didn't ask what people were wearing, people have just shared their views.

I didn't say you asked people - the title of your thread is literally speculating on other people's choices of footwear, which is, in my opinion, none of your business. Wear what you like, what other people wear is irrelevant.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/09/2021 15:06

I lecture in history of fashion.

Unfortunately all fashion does go through cycles. But only involves the 20th century for revisits.

You can bet your bottom dollar that heels will return.

emmylousings · 30/09/2021 15:06

They are horrible and look stupid IMO. Why would you put something on your feet which disables you, makes you walk in an odd way and is clearly uncomfortable? I have gone out with friends in the past who had heels on and were struggling - they got no sympathy from me.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 30/09/2021 15:07

I wore shoes with a small heel on Friday evening. No more. Trainers or flats in summer, trainers or boots in winter from now on.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/09/2021 15:11

I don’t like the way they make people walk.

allsorts1 · 30/09/2021 15:13

I'm seeing more of that 70s platform heel coming back, kind of like those Jeffrey Campbells that were all the rage in 2018 but in soft fabrics? I'd still wear heels out to dinner but def notice that the cool early 20s girls are out to really nice spots like private members clubs with chunky boots/trainers. Heels will come back I expect - so hold on to any favourites.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 30/09/2021 15:20

I'm a short arse and love heels although I have embraced the flat fashion of the last couple of years (and some people have been quite surpised at how short I actually am!!)

But I agree with you OP, I have no intention of throwing out my heeled boots and look forward to wearing them with thick tights this winter. I also still like a heel on an 'occasion' outfit.

But of course it's each to their own, and I'm not sure I'd even notice if everyone else was wearing flat shoes Smile
