To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

If I am wearing a 'little black dress' for a black tie event (as I am in November, for a long-awaiting big awards ceremony) what shoes would you stylish ladies recommend? I am already tall and do find very high heels uncomfortable (not least because the lady I am going to this event with is only 5 foot!) but what shoes would you suggest I wear that won't make my size 8 feet look even clumpier and my legs podgy and short?

PieMistee · 30/09/2021 15:21

They were in fashion for a very very long time. Even in the 1990s people still wore them for more posh events. They are now pretty dated. I only see over 50s in them (which I nearly am).

I hope of they come back it will be as a short fad.

Howshouldibehave · 30/09/2021 15:21

Why do you think no heels = trainers?!

I don’t own either!

HesterShaw1 · 30/09/2021 15:22

I'm going to a posh party soon, with dancing. Haven't been out for so long I'm going to get an entirely new outfit. The look I'm aiming for is Emma Stone's in La La Land (I did say "aiming") I'm extremely pleased that flats are in!

I'm have my eye on a gorgeous swishy voiley dress and now need to find some sparkly flats and learn to dance

PieMistee · 30/09/2021 15:23

I also think there is a big difference between a heeled boot and stiletto.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 30/09/2021 15:25

Agreed. I wore ankle boots with heels earlier in the week (signifier of Autumn!) They are much comfier than shoes with heels.

tickledtiger · 30/09/2021 15:26

@Bontanics

I wore a pair of heels once on a night out when I was 18. Never did it again. Stupid fucking torture devices.
Smarter than me then. I bought loads of pairs I bought before I realised only 1 in 3 is actually tolerable to walk in for a whole day. I wouldn’t want to know how much money I spent on them.

I went to a wedding and the heels I wore were so painful I couldn’t join in with the dancing. Angry

If heels are going out of fashion that will be a good thing.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 30/09/2021 15:29

I think they look a bit dated unless it’s a very formal occasion eg business dress or a wedding. Even then most heels I see are only a couple of inches even stilettos.

Women tottering in very high heels look like their centre of gravity is off, or they’re trying hard to look taller.

I don’t see the appeal or need for high heels. They look the opposite of glamorous unless you have perfect balance in them and aren’t 5ft trying to look 5ft5.

Empressofthemundane · 30/09/2021 15:30

It’s hard to go back to being so uncomfortable. Heels look a bit old lady now, I think.

Whitefire · 30/09/2021 15:31

I have never worn heels, baby giraffe alert.

ExConstance · 30/09/2021 15:33

I've worn mine at home from time to time, just to ensure I still can. If truth be told I prefer heels, I'm short in height and short of leg and I look best wearing them. Today I'mm wearing some ankle boots with chunky but significant heels, they are easy to walk in and comfortable. Fashion never stays in one place for long and I'm sure they will come around again, I'm just hoping it is before I need a zimmer frame.

LittleGwyneth · 30/09/2021 15:34

Lots of women still wear heels for a night out, but they're certainly not standard for going to work anymore, and thank fuck for that.

Helpimfalling · 30/09/2021 15:36

I thought this yesterday as I ordered some boots with a heel for winter.

Including myself I'm just wearing a flat-form trainer etc all the time.

I blame lock down we became lazier.

some of the younger girls I see out in town on a Saturday Night some of there styles have adapted to trainers and something less tight to fit there Tiny lock down belly's

So yes lock down I thinks a major factor

HumourReplacementTherapy · 30/09/2021 15:40

I like heeled boots but I can't walk in any other kind of heeled footwear.

Oblomov21 · 30/09/2021 15:43

I wear heels very occasionally. They don't hurt and I like them. Apparently they aren't fashionable anymore.

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/09/2021 15:44

I’ve never worn heels and never will. Designed by men to impede women’s freedom of movement. They’re horrible contraptions.

Oblomov21 · 30/09/2021 15:45

"I would ask why do heels define “glamour”, and why do we need to put aside our comfort in order to achieve it?"

Says who? I'm not putting aside my comfort in order to achieve glamour. I find high heel shoes very comfortable thank you very much.

Gothichouse40 · 30/09/2021 15:53

Heels cause foot and back issues. I had to stop wearing them a long time ago, though I did wear a small heel for an outfit going to a wedding.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 30/09/2021 15:58

I wonder if not wearing heels is going to end up like the mumsnet chicken or not having a toilet brush?!

As I said, I'll still wear them occasionally and I know that my friends will too. But that might be completely the opposite in mumsnet-land.

Borland · 30/09/2021 15:58

We went to a really swanky do a couple of weekends ago and hardly any women were wearing heels. Flats and ankle boots with sparkly bits on seem very popular with dresses at the moment. I haven't worn heels since I don't know when, and whenever I see someone out and about wearing them now they are noticeably walking with quite an unnatural gait which I don't think I noticed before as before lockdown etc it was normal seeing women out and about in heels. Now I just think why would you bother, they are so uncomfy after an hour or so!

CounsellorTroi · 30/09/2021 15:59

Once bought a pair of block heeled court shoes from next for work, they were quite high but I thought they.would be comfortable because of the block heel. They were hideously uncomfortable.

CounsellorTroi · 30/09/2021 16:01

You can get some very nice dressy ankle boots at the moment.

TartanJumper · 30/09/2021 16:01

I've never worn heels since I was 17, couldn't walk in them, uncomfortable and ugly (to me).
Couldn't care less what others do

AliceMcK · 30/09/2021 16:04

I love a nice pair of heels. At one point I don’t think I even owned a pair of flat shoes, I never wore trainers except for the gym. These days I live out of trainers only because it’s easier as a sahm running round after the DCs and because I’m fat and my ankles struggle to support my weight when I’m wearing heels.

I personally think heels are far sexier and as you say OP glamorous than flats. I know I will be abused for saying this 😆

Winceybincey · 30/09/2021 16:13

I’ve noticed lots of women wearing trainers now! Trainers are definitely in fashion. Even ones that would once be deemed ‘chavvy’ are being sported by some very well-off and fashion conscious women. I love it! I’ve never got on well with heels but still wore them so I hope this continues 🤪
