To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 30/09/2021 13:04

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

A friend who’s a work first aider told me that about 75% of her calls used to be women in heels tripping up on the stairs, turning their ankles etc.

I can’t be bothered with them.

Bigoldhag · 30/09/2021 13:32

I don’t own a single pair currently. I have periodically bought shoes with chunky small heels for weddings etc if needed but not the trend among my friends either.

Thibking back before home working, there wasn’t many women who did wear them, mostly women of a certain age, who still wore dress suits etc which definitely are not still de rigeur in my industry.

Odile13 · 30/09/2021 13:32

I haven’t worn heals in years and can’t see myself ever wearing them again. I like being comfortable and I also like how flats look. But if you like heels just keep wearing them. I wear whatever I want regardless of what other people are doing.

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/09/2021 13:32

I think they'll be back - fashion at the moment seems very casual in general which fits with the flat shoe vibe. At some point it will circle round again.

Sooverthemill · 30/09/2021 13:33

"Ladies"? Wtf

MrsRetreiver · 30/09/2021 13:34

I read a Caitlin Moran column years ago where she had apologised at a photoshoot for not being able to walk or balance in high heels and the stylists told her that no one can, they’re not meant for walking, just for show. It’s true. I have always hated heels and hate myself for struggling around in them when I was younger, because it was the done thing at weddings or in fancy offices. Trainers and flats all the way now.

Rabblemum · 30/09/2021 13:34

Thank goodness heels are now a choice and not an obligation now. You can be glam with trainers too, it's just a different kind of glam.

PartyPotato · 30/09/2021 13:34

I wear heels (mainly boots) almost every day to work, because I like the look of them. I’m sat at a desk all day so don’t need to worry about them hurting.
If I’m going on a night out, I wear flats. I wore flats at my wedding. I cannot abide my feet hurting and not being able to take my shoes off.

MargosKaftan · 30/09/2021 13:36

I'm sure they will be back in fashion right again, but right now they do feel dated. Its not just trainers, but more flat boots, loafers, brogues, and flat "going out" shoes. Im sure heels will remain for "out out" outfits, but not so much for work /daytime.

namechangetheworld · 30/09/2021 13:37

I love a pair of heeled boots in the winter, they look much nicer on my stubby legs than flats, and smarter too. I've never found them remotely uncomfortable, it's not like I'm running a marathon in them or anything.

I can't stand the current trend for dresses and trainers. It always looks ridiculous to me and, and I'm only in my early 30s. Hoping it dies a quick death soon.

Doyoumind · 30/09/2021 13:40

I've never worn them myself. I also don't tend to use the same word for women and toilets.

Spindrifting · 30/09/2021 13:41

@EishetChayil

I've never worn heels on principle. Why make it harder to walk/run?

I think it was Oscar de all Renta who said he made shoes that would make women feel as if they had a man walking behind them; many women commented that they would feel endangered, and want to run.

Yes, exactly. That 'insight' from Oscar de la R made me think what a blinkered, sexist idiot he was to imagine all women wanted nothing better than to imagine themselves swaying along in heels with a man's eyes on their ass.

I've never worn heels and don't own any.

Teeheehee1579 · 30/09/2021 13:41

They’ll come back around again - that is what fashion does. I stuck a pair of heels in my bag today for a conference I am attending, wore flats up because I walked from the station and then tube and left the heels in my bag when I got there - just didn’t feel the need as I used to.

Pheasantlysurprised · 30/09/2021 13:41

Must admit, ive been hearing about the death of the heel for a few years on the style and beauty boards.......

however, now that many people are jumping on the wide leg jeans trend they are beginning to gravitate to those platform heeled disco boots that prevailed in the 1990's.

So, yeh, perhaps it's only the slender heel that is out of vogue.

userxx · 30/09/2021 13:41

I love heels and walk so much better in them.

HarrietsChariot · 30/09/2021 13:42

They're out of fashion but will come back. Each generation reacts to their parents dress sense and tastes and pushes in another direction. Younger women see their mother wearing heels and so think they're old-fashioned. When the next generation is raised seeing their mothers wearing trainers all the time, high heels will appear more glamourous again.

It's like that with all aspects of culture. The decline in teenagers and young adults drinking is a consequence of them growing up with parents who got smashed every night of the week. The 90s and early 2000s were full of stories about how the youth of the time drank way too much (me included Smile) and younger people today are reacting to that. Give it another generation and things will flip on their heads again - by the 2040s there will be major problems with teenage binge-drinking again because they will be reacting against their parents' sobriety.

NotSorry · 30/09/2021 13:43

I wore heels to a funeral last week - I usually spend my time in trainers as I'm a sports coach so it was nice to wear heels for a change. I noticed there was a lot of flat shoes worn by women, including someone in flip-flops Hmm

Actually yes, the only heels I have seen in the wild have been chunky heeled shoes /boots, and not extremely high, think the stiletto look is out, rather than all heels.

Soles are thicker too. All more practical but less "pretty".

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 30/09/2021 13:46

Don't get me wrong ( maybe I should have explained more) I don't wear them everyday. Just on an evening out, or a lunch date with friends. The rest of the time, it DMs, trainers etc. Thanks for sharing your comments.

@CaptainThe95thRifles I didn't ask what people were wearing, people have just shared their views.

The trainer and dress thing is so useful though that I doubt we'll lose it. It means I can walk and still look smart enough for a restaurant meal. Did 10k total walking to a restaurant and back in summer and regularly do 7k with a fancy pub lunch stop. Couldn't do this in sandals

Cotswoldmama · 30/09/2021 13:49

Heel as in high heeled stiletto type just haven't been fashionable. Chunky and wedge type still are. I love a chunky heel!

Mothersister · 30/09/2021 13:50

I’ve never worn heels. I prefer a pair trainers or docs.

IfImLyingImDying · 30/09/2021 13:52

“I would say there's still a place for a mid heeled boot”

On the left it the right foot? Grin

I’ve been to many a posh do in flats. There’s nothing exclusively glamorous about heels.

IfImLyingImDying · 30/09/2021 13:53

Try that again shall we…

I would say there’s still a place for a mid heeled boot

On the left or the right foot? Grin

thinkbiglittleone · 30/09/2021 13:54

I'm still wearing mine, I love them, all of them !!

On our last night out most women had heels on, I don't see them so much in the day time.
