To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

I wore mid-height heels with straps for work and still would because they had to be comfortable for standing all day. I used to be able to run in them for the breakfast club drop-off!

I have tiny feet, am short and have muscular legs. Flat shoes don't suit me and just look clumpy, especially as I can't wear an open style of shoe and straps add bulk. I've never been able to wear things like ballet pumps or court shoes. Not that ballet pumps are good for feet either.

I look really daft in flat lace-ups and they just look frumpy and matronly. (And I'm not going anywhere near the horror of midi length dresses. It's got to be full length or above the knee)

I never wear heels. I’m tall enough so don’t need the height and the balls of my feet always hurt even in the smallest heel (I just seem to have no foot padding). I have one pair of comfyish wedges but still wear my flats mostly.

Sheerheight · 30/09/2021 14:26

I only really wear flats or at most wedges due knee issues, but when out of and about over the summer I've seen plenty of women wearing stilettos of all things.
I thought they had truelly died a death

Redland12 · 30/09/2021 14:27

I absolutely adore my heels. I will never stop wearing them. They make an outfit. I feel sexy and glamorous in them. I am 63 and worn them all my life. My friends are the same too. I also have trainers and flats but heels win hands down. But that’s just me. 👠

NotSoNewAndShiny · 30/09/2021 14:28

This is also me!

Not with chunky trainers though. Just ones with comfortable soles/padding.

PartyPotato · 30/09/2021 14:29

@Wiredforsound I absolutely do not wear heels for men. None of my clothes are for men. I wear heels or flats based only on how I feel.

Ellmau · 30/09/2021 14:29

Comfort trumps glamour for me.

malificent7 · 30/09/2021 14:30

Heels are a major cause of bunions...yuck! Not glam.

pelosi · 30/09/2021 14:32

I have worn flats 99% of the time, out and about and at work.

However, yesterday I did wear my 1 inch pumps at work yesterday and really liked the 'lift' they gave to my outfit (not my bum).

I agree anything like 3 inch heels feels unnatural.

Labradabradorable · 30/09/2021 14:33

I think you are right. Last Friday I was out in central London, in two smart bars and a Michelin star restaurant. People were smartly dressed but I saw about three people in heels. And it did look a bit dated. Most were in longer dresses and sneakers, although flat sandals and loafers were also popular.

I rarely see heels at work now (schools, so not surprising). I don’t wear them any more. DH works in the City and has noticed the same.

Tigger85 · 30/09/2021 14:35

Wear whatever you like. I hate heels and only wore them on nights out when I was younger due to social convention. I haven't worn heels for years now so welcome the fashion trend for flats.

Leftbutcameback · 30/09/2021 14:37

I'd like to wear some of my heels still - especially chunky winter boots. But after 18 months of flats my feet hurt too much . Not helped by a tendonitis issue on top of my foot. I'll have to wear them in gently.

userxx · 30/09/2021 14:37

@ThreeLittleDots

I associate stilettos with perverts. Part evidenced by the interest my barely worn, ex-cabin crew shoes got on eBay Hmm
That's more a cabin-crew fetish than heels.
Picklypickles · 30/09/2021 14:37

As short as I am I think I'd do myself a serious mischief if I attempted to walk in heels these days with my ingrown toenail and fluid-filled knee joint! I've not worn heels since before I was pregnant with my oldest who is 10, I'd rather be comfortable than taller!

EerilyDisembodied · 30/09/2021 14:38

I don't like any of them, stilettos, wedges, blocks, all bad for your feet and back and the very high ones look ridiculous. No one where I work wears them, none of my friends wear them apart from very occasionally to a wedding or similar. You hardly ever see anyone in the street in them. While fashions are cyclical, I can't see them becoming everyday wear again anytime soon.

Leftbutcameback · 30/09/2021 14:39

I should explain the reason I want to wear them still is that my lovely longer length jeans need heels to fall properly. For the shorter ankle length trousers I think flats look right.

Cazzovuoi · 30/09/2021 14:40

I have no high heeled shoes. I’ve never had nor never will. They’re uncomfortable and designed to make a woman more sexually appealing. That alone makes me want to ban them. Women are not here to be sexually appealing to men.

readwhatiactuallysay · 30/09/2021 14:40

@Wiredforsound

Women wear heels to look more sexually attractive to men. They draw attention to your butt and legs and bring with them health risks and reduced mobility. Most women these days don’t need to be seen as eye candy for men - we’re more equal, and less reliant on them (though there is a way to go), and as such we are happy wearing shoes that are comfortable, practical, and safe.
Afraid not !!! I wear heels because i like them, i feel more dressed up in them and they make me feel better.

Nothing to do with a man at all, maybe the women you know do, but not around here.

trancepants · 30/09/2021 14:41

I'm tiny but haven't worn heels since I was a teenager in the late 90s. It's just honestly so stupid to damage the long term health of my body because of a misogynistic fashion.

pelosi · 30/09/2021 14:42

The other thing is when you're 5 ' 2", people tend to expect you to give way to them and push past you, whereas when I wear heels, people are visibly more respecting of my space. That could just be a confidence thing though, as I only wear heels when I look my best.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/09/2021 14:43

Wear what you want. I don't wear heels because I find them uncomfortable and they're not my style, I like Doc Martens and chunky boots.

Lifelines11 · 30/09/2021 14:43

Hell no. I always wear heels when appropriate. Heels are beautiful and elegant.

AnotherName456 · 30/09/2021 14:46

If you like them wear them, don't worry about anyone else

PartyPotato · 30/09/2021 14:47

Wow some of these comments 🙄
