To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

Haven’t worn heels sinceI retired a couple of years back. I have dodgy knees and they are just not comfortable to work in.

CounsellorTroi · 30/09/2021 13:56

Walk in.

Tinpotspectator · 30/09/2021 13:56

I still keep mid as well as low heeled boots (both ankle and knee length) , though chunky enough heels, plus a pair of heels for particular occasions where they may be useful. I'm careful to but decent quality, such as Gabor, so they're not uncomfortable. Still, I wear trainers mostly.

sHREDDIES19 · 30/09/2021 13:57

I think the key thing is to dress to please ourselves and no one else, whether that be heels, trainers or bare foot! I must admit to cringing at youngsters following the latest fashions (whilst also acknowledging I did it myself back in the 90s) as it's like looking in a mirror almost. Following fashion is such a pointless pursuit when all along we should only be aiming to feel comfortable and good about our own choices. It's just an endless re-cycling (albeit with a few advancements along the way). People who turn their noses up at things as they are so 'old fashioned' are the problem.

ThreeLittleDots · 30/09/2021 13:57

I associate stilettos with perverts. Part evidenced by the interest my barely worn, ex-cabin crew shoes got on eBay Hmm

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 30/09/2021 13:57

@Cotswoldmama Yaaay, Chunky and wedge is what I wear 👍🏻🎉.

I wonder if one group who would be really excited about not wearing heels any more, would be the female airline cabin crew, who seem to be obliged to wear them still? I also wonder how many hours the male cabin crew would be happy to wear such insane heeled footwear for, before hobbling off the job? In the event of an emergency, even those flattish shoes the women crew wear while the flight is underway, would be useless, compared to the male cabin crew’s laced up ones with some tread on them.

Glad to see some sense to be honest, although I was a chronic heel-wearer back in the day.

I've been wearing flats for many years and had to ditch them for trainers when my dc were young(dc1) and younger(dc2). Soles of trainers helped my feet with all the running around we were doing. Gave all my heels away and don't regret it. Now I wear flats, boots (flat or low heeled), wedge and trainers.

When I see some people I know in heels in pictures, it honestly looks funny and all I can think is "You're literally on tiptoes and you look like you are", while admiring the shoes if they look nice. Looks so uncomfortable. Stuff that.

CaMePlaitPas · 30/09/2021 13:59

I like a heeled boot in Autumn/Winter, I can't wear flat boots with my chunky calves. But I'm a chunky heeled gal, no stilettos not with my knees!

I'm so glad flats are having a moment. I am also forever grateful that dresses with sleeves came back into fashion as around 2005 to 2010ish you couldn't get sleeved dresses for love nor money!

PartyStory · 30/09/2021 14:00

I think heels are not being worn because of the 90s revival and wearing trainers with a nice dress is part of that. However, since the 90s there have been trends for ballet flats and brogues that have faded into the background instead of falling completely out of fashion. This means there's a much greater choice of flat shoes than there was after the 90s trend ended.

There's also the lockdown factor which means that a lot of women will have been without a reason to wear heels for months and the tendons in their legs will have readjusted to flat shoes. Plus clothing in general is has gradually become more and more comfortable through the last century without any huge reverses. It's also becoming less acceptable for workplaces to demand that women wear heels (even if the law already says they can't). I could see environmental reasons and the impracticality of heels being used as a reason not to buy them in the future.

I don't think they will completely fade away but maybe more relegated to extra special events without much walking, such as for brides, red carpet, etc, similar to their original usage by kings as a status symbol (though adopted from riding shoes).

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 30/09/2021 14:01

Good riddance! They do look nicer but have become so dated. The couple of times a year I do wear heels I feel over dressed!

Low rise jeans are another trend that I am glad women have collectively put in the bin.

I have yet to figure out how to nail the trainers and dress look though. Looks great on others but I look like a fool Grin

unlikelytobe · 30/09/2021 14:02

There's a big difference between 'stilettos' and other higher heels which could be chunky or wedge or whatever. Basically, it's hard to walk let alone dance in stilettos!

I wear flats a lot but if I put on heels it's for a special occasion where I don't have to move much. How daft! I suppose I'm old fashioned then - I see it as making an effort to look glam.Smile

SquigglePigs · 30/09/2021 14:04

I gave up heels years ago, while I was still at university. Rarely comfortable enough to wear all night so what's the point. Plenty of good looking shoes and boots available with the need for heels.

PartyPotato · 30/09/2021 14:04

I love the dress & trainers look, I do it a lot in the summer. Completely flat shoes make my feet hurt so I need a tiny bit of elevation, so my sneakers and sandals tend to be chunky or have a bit of a platform. All of my actual high heels are boots save for one pair of red strappy heels that come out at special occasions because I just love them so much, I don’t care if they hurt after an hour!

idontlikealdi · 30/09/2021 14:04

I like a chunky boot or espadrille type wedge but no way on earth will I ever endure bloody stiletto heels again. Can't figure out why I did in the first place.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 30/09/2021 14:05

Who cares? I've just been out in a pair of lovely mid-heel (not at all high) pale suede boots and ankle grazer trousers, I think I looked ace.

What I did not look though is young. All around me, at university, are lovely young things wearing mostly trainers, some quite chunky, with big baggy jeans showing off their flat stomachs.

Good for them. I don't mind if they think Onwards looks like older than the students, because I am, and I don't see that as a bad thing.

If you prefer flats though go for it!

Saoirse82 · 30/09/2021 14:06

I wore heels every day from teenager to early 30s but I haven't worn anything with a heel for more than a year now. I prefer chunky trainers, more stylish and comfortable. Of course I'd still likely wear heels for a big night out but they are so few and far between now. Wear what you like, I wouldn't say heels are properly outdated but younger ones do tend to wear flats.

littlepeas · 30/09/2021 14:07

Pretty much all 'flat' shoes are actually heels anyway - even trainers.

Oh dear, I don't know how to tell you this, but I've just been on campus, and there's heaps of women wearing low rise/belly revealing jeans, mainly flared or just baggy. It's back to the 90's for them.

Everything comes around again!

adrianmolesmole · 30/09/2021 14:08

I'm sure they'll come back but I don't think they'll ever be the 'main' option for women any more, thankfully!

NotSoNewAndShiny · 30/09/2021 14:09

@PartyPotato I see you're posting again as me. (First was your Autumn thread). This is also me! 🤣

Heels have been dying a death for decades, in the 80s I wore (small) heels to secondary school, I would never allow the DDs to do that now. It's not just about fashion, it's about the awareness of the damage they do to your feet (my Mum loves heels and her feet are dreadfully deformed from wearing winklepickers as a teenager) and internet shopping meaning it's easier to find what you want even if it's not considered fashionable (think about how long the fashion industry has been trying to wean us off skinnies). I only wear flats (did try wearing heels in my 30s but it was too painful) and have plenty of glamorous flats: gold glittery pointy mary janes, silver slingbacks, blue suede mules, etc etc. Glamour is about materials as much as shapes so sequins, glitter, feathers, metallics, patent leather or suede all make a standard shape more glamourous. Just look at these derby shoes.

Zilla1 · 30/09/2021 14:10

Most fashion and clothing decisions are relatively cyclical so even if they are worn less now, they may revive faster than a killer at the end of a slasher horror movie.

JellyfishandShells · 30/09/2021 14:17

I was thrilled to leave heels and court shoes when I left dressy corporate life - switched to loafers rather than trainers. I bought some shoe boots with 2” heels a couple of years ago and realised I was walking much better ( more upright, less slumping, less back pain) and these are now my non-summer go to.

Trainers I like for wearing with shorts and capris in the summer - and for actual sports. My daughters wear flat gym shoe types with dresses and they look marvellous - even the one who previously loved very high heels and proved to us on holiday that she could run in heels by doing so up and down a cobbled, steep street . Calves like iron ! Now neither of them, nor any of their friends wear heels.

Wiredforsound · 30/09/2021 14:21

Women wear heels to look more sexually attractive to men. They draw attention to your butt and legs and bring with them health risks and reduced mobility. Most women these days don’t need to be seen as eye candy for men - we’re more equal, and less reliant on them (though there is a way to go), and as such we are happy wearing shoes that are comfortable, practical, and safe.
