What would you think if you saw a grown woman roller skating in the street?

Honestly? I am seriously thinking of getting a pair. I ordered my four year old a pair of roller skates for Xmas, and I used to ice skate when I was younger and loved it. I would like to teach him but I would also like to take him to skate parks etc as something we can do together. What would you honestly think about someone my age roller skating about the place? I’ll be doing it with my kids though

I used to roller skate sometimes in my lunch hour & I've rolled abroad on a long sea promenade

Go for it !

aquashiv · 29/09/2021 14:44

Good on her

Giggorata · 29/09/2021 14:47

I'd be full of admiration. 🙂

DS#2 still skateboards, at age 45, and has recently bought a motorised one to get about in the city. He said it saves him shedloads in parking.

Captainj1 · 29/09/2021 14:47

I’m 46 and have a pair of quads. Do what makes you happy as long as it’s not hurting anyone else!

Iamnotminterested · 29/09/2021 14:49

My MIL would tut and ridicule an adult on roller skates, so you've got my backing OP!

I had a pair of skates when I was 12/13, bloody loved them, used to skate up and down the street listening to the Duran Duran tape on my new personal stereo. I thought I was the bees knees Grin

MrsKeats · 29/09/2021 14:51

I would think I was in Brighton.

FuckingFabulous · 29/09/2021 14:53

Fucking Fabulous!

wonkysaddle · 29/09/2021 14:55

Good for her. And wish I was brave enough.

Lweji · 29/09/2021 14:55

My first thought might be that the 80s were back.

Just embrace it, and wear some nice colourful clothes for it. Grin

ErrmWTAF · 29/09/2021 14:56

I'd maybe have a chat with her about checking out which councils allow her to skate on the pavement and, if they don't and she had to skate on the road, to make sure she wears hi-vis so she won't get hit by a coach driver with a bad attitude (can you tell I'm speaking from personal experience?). Oh, and that wrist guards are highly recommended.

Notjustanymum · 29/09/2021 14:57

I’d think “I wish I had the confidence to do that again” and then think ruefully about my roller blades and ice skates tucked away in the loft...

notfromstepford · 29/09/2021 14:57

I'd think - woohoo you go for it! And remember back to my roller skating days and then probably go impulse buy a pair of skates Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 29/09/2021 15:13

I'm in my mid 50's and love roller skating. Go for it OP.

PearlclutchersInc · 29/09/2021 15:17

Go for it! Smile

Although preferably not zipping along on the pavement (having been half flattened on a couple of occasions).

simitra · 29/09/2021 15:18

Id think she was a lot fitter than I am!

Eve81 · 29/09/2021 15:18

I’d think good on her, that looks fun. Then I’d google getting some myself.

HarrietsChariot · 29/09/2021 15:18

What would you honestly think about someone my age roller skating about the place?

You haven't said how old you are, so it's hard to say. If someone was under 40 then the circumstances you describe would be acceptable. If you had your 4yo when you were approaching 60, then maybe not.

It's not so much the acceptability of taking part in the activity as the risk of injury, it would go up as you got older (on average).

HoikingUpMyBigGirlPantss · 29/09/2021 15:27

Go for it!
Interesting all the positive responses on here considering most PPs were against a much earlier OP thread on here about using a nonelectric scooter. Both would make me smile :)

HeronLanyon · 29/09/2021 15:55

Specifically to add that it would bring up a long festering dispute with an older sibling - we both lost the keys which tightened our skates on our shoes and we always held each other accountable ! Bloody hell families eh. Haven’t thought of that for decades. May just call my sister now ! Grin

edwinbear · 29/09/2021 16:20

I'd be jealous! DH bought me a pair of in line skates for a birthday present, I thought they would be relatively easy to master, given I can ice skate. But no, I strapped them on, launched myself out of the front door and down our street, which is on a slight down hill incline. Realised halfway down I didn't know how to stop and promptly fell in the gutter, in front of all the neighbours curtain twitching. They've lived under my bed ever since. I'd just wish I knew how to skate.

Rubyupbeat · 29/09/2021 16:25

I'd think 'good on ya' have fun with your little one!

EllaPaella · 29/09/2021 16:26

I've been roller skating since April, I'm
42. I've never had anything other than positive comments from passers by. All I would say is wear all the protective gear, falling on your knees at 42 is not like falling on your knees age 10! Grin
There are loads of facebook groups for rollerskating meet ups as well, it's very popular at the moment.

Tootsey11 · 29/09/2021 16:27

I'd think wish I could do it. I have a pair, I'm 46. Used to be good at it as a teen, now couldn't even stay upright. I'm keeping them though, I might get better one day.

EllaPaella · 29/09/2021 16:27

I should probably mention I skated a lot until I was in my late teens and also ice skated for many years so I didn't really need to 'learn' again but lots of rinks are doing learner sessions now.

FreedomFaith · 29/09/2021 16:40

I would think 'damn her for having better balance than me and being able to stay upright'. That's it. Grin
