To be glad it’s cold and wet?

I have been waiting for the whole of September for it to finally feel like autumn! I was getting so fed up of being hot and sweaty- it’s September, I want to be in jumpers and scarves and boots! I feel so cosy when it’s grey and wet outside. Obviously I don’t want it to piss it down all the time, but I don’t mind the odd bit of rain. And I definitely prefer the cold and the dark (great, I’ve made myself sound like some sort of sewer creature).

I love the calmness of autumn & winter. I find summer too intense- not just the heat but the fact that there’s so much going on all the time, it gets too much for me. I work in an industry that changes noticeably with the seasons. There’s less going on in the colder months, less stuff to go wrong, so less stress for me.

I have genuinely noticed how much better a mood I’ve been in the last couple of days since it’s gone cooler.

YABU.
How anyone can welcome the prospect of a cold autumn and winter with our precarious gas supplies is beyond me.

lollipoprainbow · 29/09/2021 07:30

Love September and October not so keen on November as it feels to much like January but at least there's Christmas to look forward to. The sun makes me feel a bit depressed if I'm honest. The expectation to be out and about in it all the time. We don't have the luxury of a garden or pool so the flat gets unbearably hot.

sHREDDIES19 · 29/09/2021 07:40

For me the thought of months of darkness is so depressing. I love a spring day with some warmth on my face, birds chirping, flowers blooming, there’s so much joy and promise in the air. Autumn and Winter for me are the opposite, everything is dying, dark and dank.

Pop an extra cardigan on and a blanket over your knees!

Only heat the room you are in.

Buy a little electric heater in case of emergencies.

There are plenty of ways to keep warm Wink

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/09/2021 07:51

They call it miserable weather for a reason. Its miserable!
I walk to work, get piss wet through, the kids are wired because they don't play out as much. It's more expensive to heat the house and I seem to be hungry all the time.
Nice autumn walks and log fires and blankets are fine if you don't have to actually do anything, that's rarely for me.

dementedma · 29/09/2021 08:01

Love autumn too but have so enjoyed having a decent summer and dont want it to end! Going back into proper clothes after shorts feels constricting and dont enjoy driving to work and back in the dark.

Mermaidwaves · 29/09/2021 08:05

I come alive in the autumn, I am the human radiator and summer is so miserable for me, I constantly sweat and feel dizzy and sick in the heat. I dread a hot summer day knowing I have to work through it, gives me terrible anxiety plus I hate summer clothes! I'm plus size so trying to find natural fabrics is near impossible.

Autumn makes me feel calmer, relieves my anxiety knowing I will never be too hot. I love storms and dramatic weather, the beach in winter is truly stark and beautiful with the colour from the sea and sky. I love how the air smells and how the light looks different plus how glorious the trees are with their changing colour.

I'm in my happy place right now Smile

LoislovesStewie · 29/09/2021 08:23

You could be my DH, never happier than when the weather is miserable. I prefer it hot, the hotter, the better. Light evenings when I can sit outside, walk on the beach in the morning and don't have to wear multiple layers of clothing, not having to put the heating on. Washing put outside to dry, flowers everywhere in my garden. I'm sad already.

RampantIvy · 29/09/2021 08:26

Going back into proper clothes after shorts feels constricting

That sums up winter clothes for me - constricting.

Where has it been hot every. single. day. over this year's summer? Because it hasn't been here (Yorkshire). April was sunny but cold with frosts most days, May was cold, wet and miserable, June was lovely - warm and not too hot, July was warm with one week of hot weather, August was cool and disappointing, September was mostly warm with a few cool days and 3 days of properly hot weather.

Today the sun is shining (yay), but at 9 degrees it is definitely coat weather.

Shizen · 29/09/2021 08:38

I am always amazed when I find threads like these that there are people who like and look forward to the colder months! I, on the other hand, have been in a permanent grump since the weather turned… hate having to wear so many layers (and wrestle the DC into them!), making me feel constricted and frumpy, hate the shock to the system of going out of a warm house into freezing air, hate the permanent grey skies of the the next 6 months…. time to get that Seasonal Affective Disorder lamp back out for at least 6 months 😭

Tumbleweed101 · 29/09/2021 08:48

September and October are among my favorite months. September is that gradual cooling down but still nice weather and October becomes cosy but still warm enough to be out and about without freezing. I find it changes after bonfire night to real cold.

I prefer the cooler nights as I get hot in bed and I've been sleeping better since it cooled down. Less keen on the dark evenings as can't get in the garden after work and I've used that as a way of relaxing after a busy day all summer.

Yep, it's like wearing a straight jacket. I feel claustrophobic. I despise jumpers, at a push I'll wear a hoodie.

PartyPotato · 29/09/2021 09:07

@RampantIvy it’s not about consistently hot summers, some people just don’t handle heat as well as others. I know we don’t have amazing summers in the UK, but it still gets hot and it still annoys me!

PartyPotato · 29/09/2021 09:08

@Mermaidwaves hard agree with all of that

I don’t understand why some people who love the hot weather and hate A/W get so offended by those who feel differently. It’s not like if we all decide we hate the cold and wet it just won’t happen anymore. Some people might as well enjoy it.

For me I just love seasons in general. I love to see them change and it makes me really sad that climate change is impacting our beautiful natural cycles.

PartyPotato · 29/09/2021 09:20

@chestnutshell some people have taken this really personally or tried to guilt trip me 😂 Like you do realise that… I don’t control the weather?

I love and hate autumn. As Tumbleweed says I love Sept and Oct, the cooling down after summer but still able to be out and about. Love the leaves changing colours it can be quite spectacular and we’re enjoying collecting conkers at the moment and looking forward to pumpkin picking in Oct. But once it gets to Nov then it does start to turn really cold and rainy, the leaves are falling and walking around just feels like a mulch fest I hate it. And by Nov it’s going dark by 4pm and the playground in the park on the way home from school becomes deserted, no one wants to be out and about and it’s like that until about mid Feb.

I don't wear anything different in the summer or winter - usually not even an extra layer.

The only two things I hate about winter are Christmas and the fact that people wear coats with fake fur (I have a phobia)

CounsellorTroi · 29/09/2021 09:56

I love autumn too. The colours, the smells, Strictly! I’ve found the mild September weather quite annoying because I want to put jumpers on. I live on a road lined with hazel trees so plenty of crunching underfoot!

It’s apparently going to be a long cold winter, so we may get some of those frosty sparkly days.

MasterBeth · 29/09/2021 09:59

But it’s been autumnal for most of the summer! Cloudy, cool and grey. YABU.

Shizen · 29/09/2021 10:10

@MasterBeth

This!

I think that’s why I’m even more depressed than usual about the change of seasons this year… we had maybe two weeks of properly hot sunny weather and the rest was crap this year. And that’s it now till April. FFS why do I live here 😭😂

Horst · 29/09/2021 10:41

Yabu it sucks it’s freezing cold. It rains all the god dam time. It’s just depressing. Dark early, coke and wet and grey and miserable. Top it off my birthdays in autumn and it always sucks because it’s always cold and wet and grey and you can’t do anything because it miserable.

I’d rather be a sweaty swamp donkey than freezing my tits off.

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/09/2021 12:11

I think I'm a sewer creature too. I actually moved hemispheres to get away from heat, not entirely successfully.
I actually like Winter best, then Autumn , then Spring. Don't like summer at all - the heat, the burning, the sweat.

For those having mood issues, I really, really recommend taking a vitamin D supplement (I sadly do still have issues with a lack of light in winter, despite loving the season).

RampantIvy · 29/09/2021 12:25

I don’t understand why some people who love the hot weather and hate A/W get so offended by those who feel differently.

I don't think winter haters are offended. More that they are fed up of people complaining about constant hot weather when it clearly hasn't been constantly hot. I get that some people don't cope with heat well just as some don't cope with cold.

My main issue with autumn and winter is low light levels. They make me feel really low and unmotivated (plus, I have crap eyesight and need bright light to see properly).

No, I get fed up with my DH telling me that it's not cold when I'm wearing 3 layers and still can't get warm.
