To be glad it’s cold and wet?

I have been waiting for the whole of September for it to finally feel like autumn! I was getting so fed up of being hot and sweaty- it’s September, I want to be in jumpers and scarves and boots! I feel so cosy when it’s grey and wet outside. Obviously I don’t want it to piss it down all the time, but I don’t mind the odd bit of rain. And I definitely prefer the cold and the dark (great, I’ve made myself sound like some sort of sewer creature).

I love the calmness of autumn & winter. I find summer too intense- not just the heat but the fact that there’s so much going on all the time, it gets too much for me. I work in an industry that changes noticeably with the seasons. There’s less going on in the colder months, less stuff to go wrong, so less stress for me.

I have genuinely noticed how much better a mood I’ve been in the last couple of days since it’s gone cooler.

It's hammering down here,and I love it
All cosy on the sofa listening to the rain with the cat purring on my lap.

I also love autumn, I can live without misery January and February though!

@DietCokeChipsAndMayo

I have a theory that summer lovers = extroverts, and autumn/winter lovers = introverts

Definitely true for me

I agree. I think that plays a big part in my hate of it, I love the sociable side of summer, I find the colder darker months quite isolating.

Tittyfilarious81 · 28/09/2021 22:44

Another reason I love autumn and winter is sleep ,I'm exhausted over summer I can never sleep well if I'm hot I hate being too warm at night even in winter I need the window open for the cool air to keep my comfortable .

Wineandroses3 · 28/09/2021 22:45

Yes OP I feel exactly the same! I can’t stand the intense heat , I love autumn and winter and I love rainy days too. I’m like it being cold as it’s easy to get warm I’ve got my lovely wool blanket on top of my duvet tonight cos it’s turned chilly , haven’t waited ages for it to be cold enough to use it, roll on winter 🥶 x

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:48

@Tittyfilarious81 exactly the same for me

Cool nights are bliss I sleep so much better

Peanutsandchilli · 28/09/2021 22:54

No, it can piss off. The cold dries out my skin and I'm forever moisturising my hands to get some relief. The dark is depressing and artificial lights fuck with my sense of reality. I hate it.

LukeEvansWife · 28/09/2021 22:59

Love autumn and winter. Not for the 'cosy' thing but I love the cold. I only wear a coat a couple of days per year!

Purpleberet · 28/09/2021 23:00

I can't stand it. I hate the shorter days and dark mornings it gets me down, and I'm always cold. It feels like ages until summer comes then it goes by so quick. I love the sunshine so much I should really move to a hotter country!

It's actually quite nice though to hear why other people like the colder season, feels oddly reassuring that there is someone else who feels the complete opposite to me 😁

notthemum · 28/09/2021 23:02

@Flev
Flev, you are my person. I can just about deal with the cold and rain as long as I don't have to go outside, but when I wake up and it's dark and still raining it makes me feel really low.
After the summer of 2020 I bought a swimming pool for this year. Had an accident before weather got good enough to use it (begining of June) DP put it up a week ago and now weather is shit and will have to take it down again. Boo 😭🤧

CorianderAndCream · 28/09/2021 23:02

Autumn is my favourite :)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/09/2021 23:03

I am always so conflicted about this. I love summer and enjoy the heat (when we get it!) but I always get so excited about the switch to knitwear and faux fur, I love autumn telly, and the run up to Christmas is my favourite. But - I live in Scotland and the lack of daylight really brings me down, I hate the rain, and I do feel nervous about the rising fuel costs with both of us still working from home part of the week.

stairway · 28/09/2021 23:04

I don’t like the dank days like today. I do like the mist and murkiness that October brings and it still isn’t unpleasantly cold. I do like hearing the rain and Autumn storms when tucked into bed and no work to go to. November and January are depressing. February there’s a feeling of change again. Love summer ( a hot one)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/09/2021 23:05

Absolutely chucking it down here earlier - SW London. I love it - as long as I’m listening indoors. TBH after spending 13 years of my life in deserts, I really appreciate rain. (Well, most of the time, anyway.)

DoYouLikeOwls · 28/09/2021 23:06

I love all of the seasons. I couldn't wait to get in from work today and get cosy. After ChristmasI though I start looking forward to Spring.

OverByYer · 28/09/2021 23:11

Urgh no. I can feel my mood sinking already. I really struggle through autumn and winter. I love summer sun, makes me feel alive. I don’t feel like we had a proper summer either so feel robbed that it’s over.

Mistressofnone · 28/09/2021 23:12

I love the autumn and winter too. I do love spring/summer but there is something about autumn that is cosy and nostalgic and a little bit mystical.

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 23:12

We don't get a lot of unpleasantly hot weather here in Yorkshire. We have had the odd week or two, and some warm weather, but not the consistently hot and humid weather that is complained about on mumsnet.

LimitIsUp · 28/09/2021 23:15

Is the change in the weather going to kill off the fruit flies in my kitchen - if so I am for it

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 28/09/2021 23:17

I'm glad it's killing off the wasps. I fucking hate wasps.

Justme10 · 28/09/2021 23:21

I just love autumn and winter!
I do like spring and summer but you can't beat dark mornings and nights, warm jumpers and hats & scarves weather Grin

I live in Scotland so it's mostly grey and wet but as long as it's not too windy I don't mind it.
I hate when it's 10 o'clock at night but not properly dark and too hot to sleep.

Chumleymouse · 28/09/2021 23:24

It’s not been a hot summer ( I work outside ) maybe 2 weeks when it was really hot and that’s about it. I’m not sure how anyone can like rain it’s the most depressing thing ever………. Roll on spring.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/09/2021 23:25

I'm not cosy. My body hasn't warmed up properly since it was lashed by wind and rain while cycling 8 hours ago.

I hate the faff of what the right warmth and waterproofing of coat I need and having to change clothes and layers constantly. Layers around your waist for running so you didn't freeze while warming up. Sweat= wet anyway. Ending in an irritable hot sweat from layers trying to herd children out of the house.

The last few weeks were perfect, simple, enjoyably warm t-shirt weather. Slide sandals on, leave the house. Not too hot and humid like July or August. Lovely, consistent warmth.

Now there'll be precious few clear days for 6 long, tedious months if recent winters have been anything to go by.

I need light and gentle warmth.

Notcontent · 28/09/2021 23:25

I quite like it when we get that crisp but sunny weather in autumn - but that’s actually quite rare in the U.K.! I don’t really like the endless rain and a bit worried about energy costs this winter.

olidora63 · 28/09/2021 23:27

I actually hate a warm Autumn ..the heat is oppressive and not the same as Summer heat …am happy the weather is now Autumnal.
