To be glad it’s cold and wet?

I have been waiting for the whole of September for it to finally feel like autumn! I was getting so fed up of being hot and sweaty- it’s September, I want to be in jumpers and scarves and boots! I feel so cosy when it’s grey and wet outside. Obviously I don’t want it to piss it down all the time, but I don’t mind the odd bit of rain. And I definitely prefer the cold and the dark (great, I’ve made myself sound like some sort of sewer creature).

I love the calmness of autumn & winter. I find summer too intense- not just the heat but the fact that there’s so much going on all the time, it gets too much for me. I work in an industry that changes noticeably with the seasons. There’s less going on in the colder months, less stuff to go wrong, so less stress for me.

I have genuinely noticed how much better a mood I’ve been in the last couple of days since it’s gone cooler.

Why the love of heavy winter clothes - jumpers, coats, boots? Confused

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 28/09/2021 23:37

@Flev

Unfortunately I've noticed my Seasonal Affective Disorder starting to kick in today - roll on spring!
I'm the opposite. It's summer that gives me the feeling of S.A.D. I absolutely hate the sun/warmer weather.

Autumn and winter are much happier months for me, I love the cold, wet, rain, snow etc. The only thing I don't like about it is ice and when the snow has become ice. Walking in fresh snow is lovely, walking in ice with a really bad back whilst waiting for a scan is a recipe for disaster.

Anotherbrokenairer · 28/09/2021 23:44

Yesss my people. Love me a bit of smart casual layering and skirts and tights and boots. So yes off you go summer with the sneezing, itchy eyes and asthma attacks, add being too hot to sleep aswel and my mood is affected. Nope us darker day lovers have to have something.

JayDot500 · 28/09/2021 23:45

I love the rain. Jogging in the rain is one of my favourite things to do now. I feel so alive, like all the things that are supposed to make me feel icky underline how alive I am (and after a recent health scare I'm very grateful for it!). The cooler air is very welcome too, since I feel less like stripping mid run.

Garriet · 28/09/2021 23:54

As I’m reading this thread, it’s just started throwing it down outside, hammering off my bedroom window as I lie in bed in the dark with my heated duvet switched on.

Love this, so cosy.

I’ll bloody hate it in the morning though when I have to head out to work in the grey gloom and cold.

PandoraRocks · 28/09/2021 23:58

I used to be like you lot, preferring the Autumn/Winter cause I hated the heat. I admit I don't like it when it goes above 28C.....however, I love being outside and making the most of the light evenings. Sitting in the garden till 9pm with a G&T, pottering about, reading. You can't do that when it's dark at 6pm!
I do like Autumn but I hate November. My mum died 5 years ago in late November and I also had a bad breakdown in November some 25 years ago 😔
The worst thing about September is you know the year's on its way out and we're racing towards Xmas. A reminder that I'm another year older and closer to the grave. I've always had this sense of melancholy around this time of year but it's worse now I'm in my late 50s.

WildFlowerBees · 29/09/2021 00:04

Love autumn, I'm grumpy in summer I hate the heat. The amount of times I've got out of the shower and had to sit in front of the fan to cool down. The boiling nights and feeling like you should be out 'making the most of it' during the day.

No thanks, I'll take the cold every time

Because some of it is absolutely beautiful?
RampantIvy · 29/09/2021 00:09

You must all live in the South of England to get these consistently boiling hot summers, because I don't recognise this unpleasantly hot weather at all.

tiredforever · 29/09/2021 00:20

I'm listening to the rain and loving it. Autumn is my favourite time of year. I love it when the evenings are dark and you're going home about 5pm and the lights are on in the shops etc.

I also love shooofing through dry leaves. If you see some mad woman walking through the thickest patch of golden leaves walking with feet barely leaving the ground and kicking leaves in long rustling strides - that'll be me. I've taught DH to shooof, and while he thinks I'm insane he agrees this is one of my better ideas. Totally transforms a boring walk to school.

My 5 week old baby loves being in the sling, think he would live in there permanently if he could. Today was the first day I haven't been a sweaty mess in the heat and him being a little hot water bottle. It was lovely to feel cool and have a content baby! It was beautifully sunny and cool, yesterday hammered down rain all morning which was also very cosy. Although not great with no car for the day, and the nursery run!!

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/09/2021 01:03

Autumn is the best season. For me summer means peri-menopausal sweating, hayfever, and (because I'm practically translucent) sunburn whenever I forget my spf. I even managed to get sunburned a week ago. I'm happy it's over for the year.

This is where I come into my element. Blankets, jumpers, candles, books, raincoats, umbrellas, hot chocolate, bonfires, even that rotting leaves smell, I love all of it.

Kljnmw3459 · 29/09/2021 01:07

I love summer but I'm also glad that autumn is here.

TheWestIsTheBest · 29/09/2021 01:38

Has anyone mentioned hot chocolate with marshmallows yet, I need to fill my bingo card. Grin.

I fucking hate winter. In fact I hated UK winters so much I emigrated to Oz, where we are now in early spring. Hopefully the rain will stop in a week or two (who am I kidding, it always does) and it will start properly warming up, as I can't wait to sit by my pool with a frozen daiquiri, total bliss! I even love the really hot days when its hitting forty, bright blue skies, quick dip down the beach before it gets too hot, then scooting between aircon and pool, heaven! So yeah, you lot are welcome to your hairy jumpers, hot chocolate, grey skies and endless drizzle!

I do acknowledge that the UK heat can be very oppressive though, especially in the city, too much humidity! Dry heat is much more pleasant. Rain here is nicer too, because it isn't freezing. But enjoy your weather, winter people!

I'm in Yorkshire too and I agree.

Autumn and winter for me can stick its cosy up its snuggly and do one.

Skyline24 · 29/09/2021 02:44

Oh I love this weather! I was literally just talking about this today with a colleague saying how much I prefer autumn/winter as there isn't the expectation to go out 😂.. i love it!

I am the exact same. Not so much pale as translucent blue/greyish 🤣 Get burnt so easily. I also sweat like bejeesus (I know, I'm making myself sound very attractive), like literally under my eyes get soaking wet with sweat, my hands sweat so much that the fingerprint recognition on my phone doesn't work. Summer makes me so miserable and fed up.

I love cold, rain, clouds, storms, dark nights. Clearly I, too, am a sewer creature Grin. And I love it.

NoLeafClover · 29/09/2021 06:31

Also, for me, it's that if I get too cold, I can keep putting on layers, wear thermals, whatever. If I'm too hot there's only so much I can take off before the next layer I can remove is my actual skin Grin. It's the no escape from the heat, it makes me feel very panicked and trapped

Chunkymenrock · 29/09/2021 06:34

Yanbu. You like what you like. I can't cope with temps over 20 degrees either. Or bright sun, insects or people wittering on about how lovely the weather is.

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/09/2021 06:34

Oh God, yes Sad

NoLeafClover · 29/09/2021 06:48

It's pure misery, isn't it, GreyhoundG1rl? That feeling like you're being suffocated. And people get so oddly affronted when you don't worship the sun. My Mum constantly says 'oh just enjoy it while it lasts'. Great, except that I don't enjoy it at all. So I never mention how unhappy it makes me, lest I get a lecture. I completely understand that lots of people enjoy the summer and dread autumn and winter. I just wish that they'd understand that sunshine and heat is every bit as miserable for me as cold and rain is for them.

Mazblue86 · 29/09/2021 07:11

'Wet play' today for sure. Bloody kids will be in my classroom while I try and have a minutes peace!

vampirethriller · 29/09/2021 07:11

I love autumn when it's bright and sunny but cold, I hate the rain though. We had what felt like a monsoon yesterday.

AlthoughTheyFlyByJumboJet · 29/09/2021 07:19

I don't see any reason to feel guilty about loving the weather I love. Someone is always unhappy, no matter what the weather. I can't control it, anyway, so why punish myself for being happy when the season and weather are to my liking? People who love the hot summer don't feel bad about that, even though some of us find it miserable. Just enjoy it and don't give it another thought!

cricketmum84 · 29/09/2021 07:21

Well hello fellow sewer dweller!

I am also loving the change in weather. Love a nice chunky cardigan and nice boots 🥰

And so much to look forward to in these months! Halloween, bonfire night, Christmas, strictly!!
