To be glad it’s cold and wet?

I have been waiting for the whole of September for it to finally feel like autumn! I was getting so fed up of being hot and sweaty- it’s September, I want to be in jumpers and scarves and boots! I feel so cosy when it’s grey and wet outside. Obviously I don’t want it to piss it down all the time, but I don’t mind the odd bit of rain. And I definitely prefer the cold and the dark (great, I’ve made myself sound like some sort of sewer creature).

I love the calmness of autumn & winter. I find summer too intense- not just the heat but the fact that there’s so much going on all the time, it gets too much for me. I work in an industry that changes noticeably with the seasons. There’s less going on in the colder months, less stuff to go wrong, so less stress for me.

I have genuinely noticed how much better a mood I’ve been in the last couple of days since it’s gone cooler.

Ditto!! I love it! Have felt so cosy all day today in the rain 🥰

Pity the cats are little soaking buggers getting paws and water everywhere now though 😂

@BoreiPuriHagafen

Yabu. I'm fucking depressed, cold, my gutters are leaking.

I can expect months of sinking into ever deeper depression, suicidal misery and despair, in cold and darkness.

But hey, as long as you can wank on about cosy jumpers.

Hear hear

This thread has just made me realise that WFH throughout winter 20-21 meant I experienced more autumnal/wintery weather than I ever have done in my life (as a baby I wouldn't have gone out in cold weather much and I've worked in offices ever since leaving school & uni), plus I started couch to 5k last November so more outdoor hours (weird timing I know).
And it wasn't bad. I think mainly I was just glad not to be doing a soggy humid commute on the tube because I never enjoyed that.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 28/09/2021 22:13

@DrCoconut

YABVU. We have had no summer yet and now it's dark early as well as pissing with rain most of the time. It's always a horrible time of year but this year it seems worse somehow because we've had no properly hot weather to recharge in ready for another winter. It's going to be a long mental slog through to spring.
No summer?? There's probably been about 15-20 days of 25+ in the midlands. That's more than enough.
PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:14

@ImNotDancing exactly, temperature doesn’t affect everyone the same. Some people get cold easily, I don’t. I do get hot easily though, and it makes me very uncomfortable!
But I don’t get mad at other people for enjoying the summer, I get mad at home in my sweaty bed of hellfire.

On the whole I think British homes are more suited to cooler weather - I've melted over the summer with no air conditioning and a new kitten who mustn't get out so windows only on the latch not fully open (being peri menopausal hasn't helped). Am glad to be cool for a change.

@FirstTimeMommy2021

Yessss Autumn is my favourite season!! Red and orange leaves everywhere, I love the sounds of crunching under your feet, I'm not BU by digging the ugh boots out, can get my knitwear ready to be snuggled up in and i love dark mornings and dark nights so I can get the candles on and it just feels so homely and comforting 🤎🧡❤️
I don't enjoy the longer dark days (especially in the evenings) but yes to the homely and comforting ambience (especially in the mornings).

Though, after a while, I just need some natural bright light.

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:16

@JesusIsAnyNameFree I’m in the Midlands too and I think it’s been a fairly decent summer here.

I love the changing seasons, nature has its own rhythm. It would be so dull and boring if it were just the same all year round. Autumn is a beautiful time, l love the colour changing of the trees. I don't mind the darker nights, nice to sit cosy with a good book or browse online, plan my garden for next year.

MrsJBaptiste · 28/09/2021 22:16

Where the hell do some of you live that you're glad summer is over and you've had enough of the heat? We had a few weeks if that where itvwas half decent. Definitely a crap summer when the weather didn't even start to get mild until May.

Autumn is shit. It's rarely crisp and crunchy more like damp and dark with the constant threat of rain. Doubly shit if you have curly hair.

I am exactly the same, I spend the summer months uncomfortable and short on sleep!

Decent, in the way that I wanted to take to my freezer and fucking stay there until, well, today Grin

chillidoritto · 28/09/2021 22:17

I don't understand people who say they had no summer either?! We had lots of lovely days! And until 2 days ago, September had been lovely too!

On Saturday I went outside to deal with a big delivery. It was like a muggy summers day, I started sweating and then the absolute fucking rage came about the horrific weather lol. Half an hour after my shower too!
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/09/2021 22:20

I do like the scent of autumn, and that moment when you first smell it.

I don’t really like the rain, I like that autumn weather when it’s dry and bright and cold. Weather where you need both sunglasses and a coat.

AlexandraEiffel · 28/09/2021 22:20

OP you have described it so perfectly. I totally agree about August feeling too much, and the calm of autumn. I thought it was just me. I like the food, clothes, freshness, snuggliness too. But totally with you on the calm after frenetic august.

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:21

I should just say, I’m happy to have hot weather sometimes. Lying by a pool, with a drink in hand, turn up the heat please! And I’m glad during the summer at the weekends when I can have people over and sit outside. But by the end of august I’m so done with it, and for the heat to carry on all through September like it has done, that is absolutely not on for me 😂 I put on my brave face june-august, give me my autumn now please!

I was quite pleased to wear my first 'dress-tights-boots' outfit of the season today!

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:22

@AlexandraEiffel I’m glad you understand what I mean! Autumn and winter calm my mind.

My garden is appreciating the rain. We had builders in last week and the rain has washed away all the dust.

I prefer summer. I prefer summer dresses, shorts, loose vest tops and sandals/flipflops.

I don't want to have to be bundled up in several layers to feel warm. I don't want to spend ages putting on a coat, scarf, hat, gloves and boots before I leave the house. I hate claustrophobic "cosy". I hate the short days and low light levels.

If we enjoyed the bright autumn and winter days that people romanticise about I wouldn't mind, but my reality is damp and gloomy, which is dispiriting.

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:22

@Echobelly that’s all I’ll be wearing for months now ☺️

Flev · 28/09/2021 22:23

@ChrissyPlummer

Do SAD lamps actually work? I also hate it as I work shifts and it’s so much nicer to go to work for an early shift in daylight, instead of darkness. It’s been dark for about a couple of weeks when finishing on lates already. Actually dreading autumn and winter. We never get the ‘cosy snuggles’, just endless grey and rain.
Yes, they definitely do help, but make sure you get one that's a decent level of brightness.

And to @PartyPotato and @NotSoNewAndShiny - I'm certainly not upset/offended/(insert other negative emotion here) by you and others loving autumn and winter. I used to do so myself and can still sort of appreciate autumn, just my emotions don't go along with it, if you know what I mean?

Doggydoodah123 · 28/09/2021 22:23

Same!

PartyPotato · 28/09/2021 22:25

@Flev I get what you mean :) that’s kinda how I feel about summer. I appreciate it to an extent but my emotions are better in colder weather.

Love it. Less annoying neighbours about. Less annoying people on foot. Less annoying dog walkers pretending to not peer in my living room window. Less random cars parking outside my house. LOVE IT.
