Pink Floyd are rubbish

I wfh and usually have the radio on. DH has left Absolute Classic Rock on from when he was washing the dishes last night. It has been enjoyable and listened to some good tunes (obviously I am old - well 41).

Heard 2 Pink Floyd songs and my god they are awful. Long, pretentious and boing! Listened to a few on Apple Music and wanted to kill myself - a funeral dirge would be more jolly.

I know they have lots of fans so please tell me IANBU

Yabvu Pink Floyd rock.

Would rather listen to them that that tripe that passes as music in the UK charts these days

RobertaFirmino · 28/09/2021 20:06

@Mercurial123

I don't like anything melancholy

Yet you say you enjoy listening to Joy Division?

Quite. As much as I love JD, their second album, 'Closer', is basically a musical suicide letter.
OhWhyNot · 28/09/2021 20:08

YANBU

Most over rated band ever

Music is so tedious

I’ve had to suffer seeing them live not one but twice 😴

Long long evenings 😴😵‍💫

annacondom · 28/09/2021 20:09

Ooh yes, A Saucerful of Secrets is another wonderful album.

Duchess379 · 28/09/2021 20:18

Omg - get out!!! I love Pink Floyd. Some of the music they have written is legendary. 💕

Livpool · 28/09/2021 20:34

To be fair @RobertaFirmino @Mercurial123 I only have 1 song in my Apple Music library. And it is Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Not exactly jolly but a song I like. By the sound of that album I'd be depressed before it finished!

I didn't think there was such feeling about Pink Floyd! If I ever have access to LSD or a spliff (will have to take my inhaler first) will give them another listen as per PPs advice

Floyd were great until Roger Waters left

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 28/09/2021 20:44

Yabvu, but I was not so much a fan until my late 30s.

CheapFoodShits · 28/09/2021 21:25

YANBU. Pink Floyd's music is bloody awful.

VestaTilley · 28/09/2021 21:39

High Hopes by Pink Floyd is one of my favourite songs. If you haven’t heard it, play it now!

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 21:57

I love Dave Gilmour's album Rattle That Lock.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 28/09/2021 23:35

@FleetwoodRaincoat

YANBU, I can't stand them either. Pretentious, self-indulgent, drug-induced nonsense. Ditto Led Zeppelin.
Fucking hell! Give over and watch that potty mouth! 😳

You'll be slagging off Rush next

OhWhyNot · 28/09/2021 23:46

I wouldn’t worry OP about listening to PF when drug induced

It’s still just as 😴 just seems longer

An ex spent ages trying to convenience me otherwise but he also introduced me to early Fleetwood Mac which I absolutely love. Dragonfly when stoned is just absolutely beautiful 🤩

BlueBellsArePretty · 28/09/2021 23:58

Yanbu

Don't like them and can't be bothered with the swooning reverence some people have for them.

BlueBellsArePretty · 29/09/2021 00:04

@FleetwoodRaincoat

Ditto Led Zeppelin.

Yes another band I can't be bothered with. 'Whole lotta love' starts out OK but is ruined by the pretentious plinky plunky bit in the middle.

Theoldprospector · 29/09/2021 00:07

‘I didn't think there was such feeling about Pink Floyd!’

Well of course there is. They are a huge part of our musical history, and the U.K. is known globally for its musicians.

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/09/2021 00:15

Have to say I really like "love will tear us apart" too, as it's a great tune, just like some of Pink Floyd's songs and Bowie and, and and. no "reverance" from me just like a nice song. Here's some:

NalPolishRemover · 29/09/2021 00:21

I don't mind pink floyd though i wouldn't call myself an actual fan.

My controversial musical aversion confession is....The Beatles- can't stand their music

DerAlteMann · 29/09/2021 00:22

I'm with you OP and have felt that since I first heard Dark Side of the Moon back in the day. Better than ELP but that's all you can say.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 29/09/2021 00:26

I'm a big Floyd fan but can respect it won't be for everyone.

Funny you should say about your music taste, as I think my DH's taste is too happy Wink and I've always much preferred dark tunes with minor keys

Like a lot of old church music, the best effect is when you switch from minor to major; it's like waves of light hitting you.

The bit in Comfortably Numb when it does that - so the start of 'There is no pain, you are receding - a distant ship smoke on the horizon' and then later 'When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse...', with the downward-scale waves of violins in the background, it does physically affect me, like a balm.

Dave Gilmour is utterly gorgeous, but too happy. He's not mad or dark enough to compete with the Barrett / Waters era albums, which are the best. His and Rogers's tensions basically boiled down to this, I think. The dark and the light.

Aorh · 29/09/2021 03:17

Holy shit, of course YABVU. Blasphemy.

Ophanim · 29/09/2021 05:50

@ColettesEarrings

YANBU, they're over indulged, over hyped, drug addled has beens.
Drug addled? You really don’t know anything about them at all, do you?
HarlanPepper · 29/09/2021 07:39

I've never quite understood why people argue about musical tastes. I get that part of it is the satisfaction and reassurance in finding people who already agree with you, but apart from that - what's the point? People like what they like.

I do love Pink Floyd, for what it's worth, pretty much all of it, from the Syd Barrett era right through to Division Bell. Dark Side of the Moon was one of the first albums I owned and it's like an old friend.

RampantIvy · 29/09/2021 08:29

Dark Side of the Moon was one of the first albums I owned and it's like an old friend.

Same here. Listening to it always reminds me of sitting at the dining room table with my sister doing my A level homework.
