Pink Floyd are rubbish

I wfh and usually have the radio on. DH has left Absolute Classic Rock on from when he was washing the dishes last night. It has been enjoyable and listened to some good tunes (obviously I am old - well 41).

Heard 2 Pink Floyd songs and my god they are awful. Long, pretentious and boing! Listened to a few on Apple Music and wanted to kill myself - a funeral dirge would be more jolly.

I know they have lots of fans so please tell me IANBU

Your thread title made me laugh.

Has to me the tone of a woman who’s been made to listen to The Floyd since the mid-70s and today in 2021 she has had enough.

I hope further threads follow on Uriah Heap, Jethro Tull, and King Crimson!

Livpool · 28/09/2021 16:05

@RiotAtTheRodeo ha that is how I felt after 2 songs to be fair.

Next in my series of badly-received threads will be 'puppies are horrible - AIBU' 😂

Just a disclaimer- I like puppies 👍🏼

Thanks to all who replied, especially those who agreed with me!

I will accept IABI to call them rubbish but I still won't be adding them to any of my playlists 😂

YANBU.

drpet49 · 28/09/2021 16:14

Yeah their music is crap. I don’t like a single song of theirs.

MalcolmTuckersBollockingface · 28/09/2021 16:14

NOT unreasonable in the slightest!

Crikeyalmighty · 28/09/2021 16:16

I work in music , am in my 50s and PF are in my top 3 artists of all time. From the quirky psychedelia of Pipers at the gates of Dawn thru to the the political anger of Animals and another brick in the wall. Now if you had said you can’t stand Ed Sheeran who struggles to play more than about 4 chords and writes infantile tosh— then I would be with you.

Guacamole001 · 28/09/2021 16:16

Their music is ace. Very original. Dark Side of the Moon and Animals very good albums.

Igotmylipstickon · 28/09/2021 16:16

I don't like them either and my DH loves them. Not saying they are rubbish, but just not to my liking - it puts me in bad form.

When DH puts on his other favourites, say Pearl Jam, that's fine, but with PF come on, I have to leave the room.

It's interesting as I love 70s/80s rock music generally.

123rd · 28/09/2021 16:18

Ugh totally agree. Really can't stand PF...I know I'm in the minority but will actively turn off the radio if they come on

Hoolahoophop · 28/09/2021 16:20

I didn't get them at first, but the more I listen the better they get. The sound track to uni for me.

VirgilStarkwell · 28/09/2021 16:23

Aargh. Another Brick in the Wall was at number one for weeks on end. SO BORING every time they showed the video on Top of the Pops.

“We don’t need no education.” Yes you do, love.

Although, a friend did a PF compilation for me, and it’s ok, I suppose.

CantChatNow · 28/09/2021 16:25

YANBU to not like them - different strokes for different folks and all that - but YABVVVVU to call them rubbish! I’m 31 so they’re not “of my time” at all but they were definitely part of my teenage musical awakening and listening to and appreciating PF (and other 70s/80s rock) together helped maintain the relationship with my dad through some very rocky teenage years. Definitely agree they are albums to be listened to in their entirety!

RandomLondoner · 28/09/2021 16:25

I reckon the majority of people saying 'how DARE you, they are legends!' couldn't name 5 songs by Pink Floyd or more than one member of the band

Like the OP, you're in no position to assess them, becaue you think of their output in terms of songs, rather than albums. You're need to listen to whole albums, from beginning to end in one go, concentrating only on what you were hearing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 16:27

Yes and, having heard them first on a home tape, dark side side and wish you were here are one album and the tracks are named after a memorable lyric

Points for the real track name of Paper Boy 😂

RandomLondoner · 28/09/2021 16:32

On the subject of them being depressing - that proves their value. The point of art is to evoke emotion. If you're not feeling different at by end of a piece of music, either you weren't concentrating or it wasn't very good.

On a slightly unrelated note, I remember someone (George Clooney?) talking about the earlier 20th century popular music in "Oh brother where art thou", and saying in those days popular songs were usually about death, rather than love/sex like today. It's not historically unusual for popular music to evoke negative ideas and emotions.

DotBall · 28/09/2021 16:34

Comfortably Numb live from Pompeii is one of my all time top tracks.

Superb musicianship, especially from Gilmour, who must’ve played the guitar solos for it a billion times, but make it sound special every.single.time.

PF, Genesis (pre1985) and Rush are my 3 top bands. All superb musicians (RIP Neil Peart 😭 end of an era).

DaxtheDestroyer · 28/09/2021 16:36

I love PF. Roger waters wrote amazing anti-war songs but they are definitely not radio tracks.
The final cut is a haunting album. Southampton dock gives me chills every time I hear it.

My DH hates them with an absolute passion! He can't stand concept albums or moving music. Fair enough, different strokes and all that. Even he concedes they were talented though!

isthismylifenow · 28/09/2021 16:38

Hey You!

YABVU

Allergictoironing · 28/09/2021 16:40

Depends on how you define "rubbish" really. All the band members were/are exceptional musicians, which is much more than can be said for many of the more popular radio oriented bands. Even my father, born in the 20's and brought up on classical music (and a fan of big band and swing music) could appreciate the quality of their music even if it wasn't to his taste. Same with Genesis.

Allergictoironing · 28/09/2021 16:42

Ah just seen X-post with DotBall. Yes I agree with Rush too (though didn't like Clockwork Angels as much).

RockingAmadeus · 28/09/2021 16:48

I love them, PF lyrics are pure poetry.

blobby10 · 28/09/2021 16:49

I had never listened to them as was more of a pop type music fan in my teens but my OH loves them so I took him to a PF tribute act for his birthday. Went with an open mind - was glad I had been but it wasn't music I would choose to listen to again and I couldn't name any of the songs! The tribute act were extraordinarily talented especially the drummer but I wouldn't choose to see them again.

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 16:53

You need to change the thread title to "I don't like Pink Floyd" from "Pink Floyd are rubbish".

Dark Side of the Moon spent 950 weeks in the charts. Yes, a lot of their work was pretentious, but they were and still are very accomplished musicians.

TheWeeDonkey · 28/09/2021 16:59

YANBU, DH loves them but I refuse to listen. There are a couple of songs I'll listen to. I like all sort of music but prog rock is just overindulgent, pretentious and boring, and yes they're a bit depressing too.
