Pink Floyd are rubbish

I wfh and usually have the radio on. DH has left Absolute Classic Rock on from when he was washing the dishes last night. It has been enjoyable and listened to some good tunes (obviously I am old - well 41).

Heard 2 Pink Floyd songs and my god they are awful. Long, pretentious and boing! Listened to a few on Apple Music and wanted to kill myself - a funeral dirge would be more jolly.

I know they have lots of fans so please tell me IANBU

One of my favourite PF tracks is When the Tigers Broke Free - heart rending anti war lyrics based on the death of Roger Waters' father in ww2.

Suzi888 · 28/09/2021 18:35

YANBU I’m not a fan

Mercurial123 · 28/09/2021 18:35

YABU I doubt anyone cares you don't like them.

Gingersay · 28/09/2021 18:42

I grew up in a PF house my dad loves them, I don't, however if I hear a PF tune it reminds me of being a wee girl so I don't mind a wee bit of nostalgia but I couldn't listen to an album.

Wabola · 28/09/2021 18:42

They are better on an LP record but a lot of old stuff is.

Jellykat · 28/09/2021 18:49

If like me, you watched the inflatable pig over Battersea power station... from your bedroom window (1977 Animals album cover) .. PF are part of your childhood, especially when your parents played DSOTM constantly.
So yabu, i love the early stuff... you're not old enough to have been around then, so won't get the connection.

Libertaire · 28/09/2021 18:51

@Wabola

They are better on an LP record but a lot of old stuff is.
Yes, that’s true. PF’s music isn’t modern computer-created, auto-tuned pop. It wasn’t written or produced to sound good as a heavily compressed digital file on a phone via ear buds, because such things didn’t exist in the 1970s. It’s supposed to be listened to through proper speakers which allow the music to ‘breathe’.
bigburdd · 28/09/2021 18:58

I'm not a massive fan but my Dad was! We played Wish You Were Here at his funeral.

SueSaid · 28/09/2021 19:00

They're alright I suppose. Bit dull and longwinded but Comfortably Numb is ok. I have to turn the radio over if that one with a woman wailing for half an hour comes on.

There's a certain type of Pink Floyd fan isn't there.. they usually look ancient and stink of fags and musty joss sticks Grin

Iflyaway · 28/09/2021 19:07

I like their early stuff ( I was really young then)

Yes! Ummagumma is brilliant. Saw them live around that time too.

The later stuff doesn't do it for me.

Livpool · 28/09/2021 19:11

I'll cry about that later @Mercurial123 - possibly after listening to some Pink Floyd 😂

Grumpasaurus · 28/09/2021 19:13

@tillytoodles1 me too! My DB died when he was 26 and he loved pink floyd. We played his favourite song, shine on you crazy diamond, at his funeral. I also have shine on, younger brother, tattoo'd on my ankle in kanji (he was obsessed with Japan and learning Kanji when he died).

notimagain · 28/09/2021 19:16

Blimey..there are so many strongly entrenched opinions I’m beginning to wonder if Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour are secret Mumsnet’ers.Grin

(I guess the “certain lady” being referred to is Clare Torry….that track is one hell of a first take)……

astronomydomine1 · 28/09/2021 19:21

I accept their music is not to everyone's taste, but there is a difference between not to your taste and rubbish. Personally love much of their early stuff above all.

As for mentioning S Club 7, the only thing they will have done is increased sales of tissues for teenage boys.

SueSaid · 28/09/2021 19:24

'Roll yourself a nice spliff, put Floyd on loud on a decent hi-fi system, feet up, relax & let the music wash over you. Then you’ll get it. wink'

Yep, getting stoned is the only thing that makes it tolerable tbh.

Rainbowheart1 · 28/09/2021 19:24

You can’t listen to it on radio, it’s not that type of band, you need to listen to the album.

Thank think you’re supposed to be stoned when you listen to it too

RobertaFirmino · 28/09/2021 19:28

David Gilmour is probably the greatest living guitarist in the world. On that basis YABU.

the80sweregreat · 28/09/2021 19:28

Hey, as much as I love PF , you have to admit that 'reach ' is a pop classic !
I just love music and can appreciate all forms.
It's like art, whatever someone might find rubbish I actually like , especially modern art!
Wouldn't do for us all to like the same things in life.

OhGiveUp · 28/09/2021 19:30

Put a Pink Floyd track on at breakfast time and it's just about ending at bedtime.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/09/2021 19:36

If you want prog rock you have to reach far deeper into navel gazing, odd time signatures and ponderousness that that!

Money's pretty odd in terms of time signature to a lot of people - 7/4.

OK, it isn't King Crimson or Dream Theatre, but it's still unusual - and if you want White Middleclass Male Baby Boomer in the Upper Sixth Common Room Angst, they're definitely up there - just with the advantage of having some great bass driven tunes as well as dreamlike em7-am7 parts. Quite like the lack of riffs on the theme of a bird and snow falling over the hills type stuff, too although that effervescentfucking elephant can knob right off and take Ned's Atomic Breakfast with him

AlthoughTheyFlyByJumboJet · 28/09/2021 19:38

Some of their music isn't for me. Other songs I could listen to every day and not be bored. Definitely not rubbish, just not to everyone's taste.

And even though I love some of their songs, yes, they can be a bit melancholic. That's okay. That's part of the appeal, honestly, though obviously that sweet melancholy isn't for everyone.

rslsys · 28/09/2021 19:42

Recently re-discovered my love of Pink Floyd via Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets. He is showcasing pre Darkside material and very good it is too!

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/09/2021 19:44

At least they weren't one hit wonders consigned to the music bin of "rubbish".

Big catalogue of songs and various 'productions' and I don't like them all but to me some are really, really good - even without a spliff or LSD.

Mrstamborineman · 28/09/2021 19:48

Yabu to try and make this funny with killing your self.

Mercurial123 · 28/09/2021 20:02

I don't like anything melancholy

Yet you say you enjoy listening to Joy Division?
