Pink Floyd are rubbish

I wfh and usually have the radio on. DH has left Absolute Classic Rock on from when he was washing the dishes last night. It has been enjoyable and listened to some good tunes (obviously I am old - well 41).

Heard 2 Pink Floyd songs and my god they are awful. Long, pretentious and boing! Listened to a few on Apple Music and wanted to kill myself - a funeral dirge would be more jolly.

I know they have lots of fans so please tell me IANBU

I also never liked the Rolling Stones. But I love cover versions of their songs.

Taskmastre · 28/09/2021 15:12

YABVU. They are amazing Smile

ColettesEarrings · 28/09/2021 15:14

@Livpool I find the situation bizarre tbh, they're clearly talented technical musicians, so how come they write such utterly borrrring music? It's dirge like and all the same. Loathe them.

Livpool · 28/09/2021 15:16

@ColettesEarrings let's listen to Reach by S Club 7 and cheer ourselves up!

Agree they are good musicians but...it reminded me of going to see a shit band I uni that just played miserable instrumental music. Lots of the (drugged up) audience seemed to think they were amazing

@the80sweregreat I will watch the Care Bears movie or something instead.

I read the synopsis and it didn't sound like my kind of thing to be honest ...

Their newer stuff is not as good as their older stuff, IMHO. I'm not keen on comfortably Numb. You need to original line-up with Sid Barrett, or the post-original line-up, before the big falling-out between Gilmour and Waters. But they were all classically trained musicians. I prefer their stuff before Darks Side of the Moon - I absolutely love Meddle. Also Piper at the Gates of Dawn, etc. Listen to Astronomy Domine (track) - it gives me goosebumps. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing, but YABVU to call them rubbish.

Pikamoo · 28/09/2021 15:21

I'll be honest and say that before I took some LSD and listened to them I didn't appreciate them. I love them now though, even though the LSD was a one time thing! Actually I'd say that one evening really opened up a new enjoyment of music, not just the stuff we listened to at the time either.

MyPatronusIsACat · 28/09/2021 15:25

Each to their own, and I know they are hugely popular with a massive fan base. But I agree @Livpool Boring as fuck and overrated. Then again, the same could be said for some others too. Bob Dylan, Adele, Ed Sheeran, U2, and a number of others.

I don't think I have heard a single song by Pink Floyd that isn't snoozeworthy........

I reckon the majority of people saying 'how DARE you, they are legends!' couldn't name 5 songs by Pink Floyd or more than one member of the band. And it's no good anyone saying yeah I can, because you could just google it!

Like with a few other artists/bands, it's the 'emperor's new clothes' effect...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 15:28

Try them on headphones in a darkened room when you don't need to be anywhere.

Their music is utterly lost on radio, which is why they were rarely a singles band. They made music intended to be heard as an album. At which point they become totally immersive.

May not be your thing, but please, don't judge them because some dickhead DJ wants to flash his cool credentials.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 28/09/2021 15:28

I like many of their songs but I do get why other people don’t. Prog isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

A former work colleague used to loathe them - said that listening to them made her feel physically ill. Grin

kristplankook · 28/09/2021 15:29

My DH would disagree!!

I love Comfortably Numb, one of my favourite songs. Others I could happily never hear again. Certainly not rubbish though!

LukeEvansWife · 28/09/2021 15:31

And what do you like, OP?

Time40 · 28/09/2021 15:31

YABU. VVU indeed.

... unless you were listening to Atom Heart Mother, in which case YANBU. God knows what they were thinking (or taking) when they made that one.

upaladderagain · 28/09/2021 15:32

Dark Side of the Moon is an absolutely genius piece of work, comparable to anything by Beethoven or Cole Porter.
But stick to SClub7 if that's your thing.

I am one of those people and can assure you I can name the various iterations of the band, their albums and the album tracks. But don't let that stop you generalising
CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 15:32

Oh yeah! Maybe stop before you get to the Division Bell.

Waters may be an arrogant sod, but the rest are far less without him, and he without them. Together, for a good run of albums, they were far more than a sum of their parts.

But you have to like big, airy music that takes ages to get anywhere Smile

Howling 🤣🤣🤣 (no pun intended) Completely agree!
Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/09/2021 15:34

Bob Dylan is 'over-rated'?

LukeEvansWife · 28/09/2021 15:34

Tbf the Beatles are overrated in my opinion but I acknowledge their contribution to music

EvenPhilip · 28/09/2021 15:35

@LowbrowVictoriana

Some people like PF; some don't. Some recognise that they have talent, even if not a fan.

Not sure why it warrants a thread 🤷‍♀️

You could say that about 90% of the threads on here Hmm
Sirzy · 28/09/2021 15:36

Each to their own. The world would be boring if we all liked the same things.

I wouldn’t put them in my top 5 but I do love some of their songs.

turkeyboots · 28/09/2021 15:37

YANBU. At all. I strongly dislike prog rock.

TheFabledSnake · 28/09/2021 15:38

I appreciate their music but wouldn't choose to listen to it if you know what I mean. Then again I really like The Smiths and people fucking hate them to there you go!

politics4me · 28/09/2021 15:40

What made them extraordinary when they started was how different they were to other bands.
Within just a few years technology had made any pioneering sound repeatable with low priced kit.
Another Brick.. expressed sentiments that had not been performed on mass entertainment shows before.
They were very talented pioneers and their management kept them in the public eye and earning for longer perhaps than they ought.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 15:40

😆 they weren't/aren't prog.

If you want prog rock you have to reach far deeper into navel gazing, odd time signatures and ponderousness that that!
