Pink Floyd are rubbish

I wfh and usually have the radio on. DH has left Absolute Classic Rock on from when he was washing the dishes last night. It has been enjoyable and listened to some good tunes (obviously I am old - well 41).

Heard 2 Pink Floyd songs and my god they are awful. Long, pretentious and boing! Listened to a few on Apple Music and wanted to kill myself - a funeral dirge would be more jolly.

I know they have lots of fans so please tell me IANBU

I used to agree but over the last few years I have come to enjoy their music. Dave Gilmours guitar playing is sublime and I've been moved to tears on several occasions. I was listening to on a island while having my first chemo and was suddenly able to release months of repressed emotion. Cheaper than therapy and drugs ! Finally on the Dave Gilmour appreciation he appears to be a decent human being.
My son as a newborn would always drift off into a relaxed sleep to division bell.
My husband who is a life long Floyd devotee thinks that the Wall is the worse PF album ever He remembers buying it at Woolies when it was released and immediately swapping it at school for another prog rock classic.

YANBU
I think the hype is worse than the music.

ConstanceGracy · 28/09/2021 17:17

Judging by your list you don’t have any musical taste apart from The Cure and Joy division but I reckon they’re flukes ..
I mean Beyoncé?! Sheesh

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 28/09/2021 17:20

Rude!

Theoldprospector · 28/09/2021 17:33

I can’t imagine life without them, especially the early psychedelia.

LST · 28/09/2021 17:37

I'm 31 and love Pink Floyd. YABU

Livpool · 28/09/2021 17:50

Ha fair enough @ConstanceGracy

I love 'Comfortably Numb' because it sums up my life.
Don't like any of their other stuff!

the80sweregreat · 28/09/2021 17:57

The scissor sisters did a cover of ' comfortably numb ' !! It wasn't that bad , but PF fans were probably not impressed!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 18:05

I didn't mind it. It just seemed superfluous, bit it meant something to Jake Shears, I think.

And you can't dislike a band whose lyrics include

I've got a mouse and he hasn't got a house
I don't know why I call him Gerald.
Hes getting old but he's a good mouse

Giggorata · 28/09/2021 18:05

Good heavens, OP, and others. Pink Floyd are wonderful.

They are didn't make the ephemeral, easy listening pop music that is the usual radio fodder and I get how someone who was expecting that sort of thing might not enjoy them.

They weren’t particularly drug addled either, as someone said. Apart from poor Syd.

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 28/09/2021 18:08

I've only ever heard a few of their songs, but I have absolutely no desire to hear any more. That said, life would be boring if everyone liked the same stuff.

Ileflottante · 28/09/2021 18:10

Might be unreasonable (it’s not) but I happen to think anyone that doesn’t like them is an idiot who doesn’t understand or appreciate truly brilliant music, and whose own musical taste must be embarrassing. I wish (I don’t) I was joking. 😂

MichelleScarn · 28/09/2021 18:14

What? Comfortably Numb? Wish you were Here? Amazing, it's OK to not be your cup of tea, but to say they're rubbish?!
That's like saying Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are rubbish at business!!

MichelleScarn · 28/09/2021 18:15

@Ileflottante Grin absolutely!!

AtomicSquirrel3 · 28/09/2021 18:18

Agreed OP. Their version of Comfortably Numb depresses me no end.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/09/2021 18:20

Their version?

Oh, never mind!

chocolateorangeinhaler · 28/09/2021 18:20

Dark side of the moon is brilliant. I love it. Never really listened to any other albums.

Quite deep lyrics.

When I was little nurofen used a bit of 'great gig in the sky' in one of their ads. I loved Claire Torry's vocals in it. Didn't know who it was until I discovered the whole track years later. I was so thrilled to find it was an actual track.

She is a really great singer and her vocals are what you hear in the beginning of Abigails Party when Beverly puts on 'love to love you baby' as I believe they couldn't get permission to use Donna summers version.

jaundicedoutlook · 28/09/2021 18:21

You’re being a bit unreasonable- early stuff was great, especially with Syd Barrett but they did go downhill after Dark Side. Levels of musicality dropped and much of the later stuff is a bit lumpen / Dad Rock / noodling / Clarksonesque…

Yamayo · 28/09/2021 18:23

Yes.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/09/2021 18:25

I’m a fan of the Syd Barrett stuff (Piper especially, and his solo albums), and then everything with Gilmour up to The Wall. My singing voice even rivals Roger Waters’ Grin. The later stuff is too political dirge-y (Waters) / Clarkson-esque dad rock (Gilmour).

Libertaire · 28/09/2021 18:30

Roll yourself a nice spliff, put Floyd on loud on a decent hi-fi system, feet up, relax & let the music wash over you. Then you’ll get it. Wink

Getyourownback · 28/09/2021 18:31

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Their version?

Oh, never mind!

😂
FleetwoodRaincoat · 28/09/2021 18:31

YANBU, I can't stand them either. Pretentious, self-indulgent, drug-induced nonsense. Ditto Led Zeppelin.
