To think they should have told me about the cameras

I was invited to stay with a friend, her husband and their 2 dcs. They have a lovely house and I was there for a week.

A few days ago I spoke to my friend to say thank you and she said that they loved having me, especially because I was so funny dancing away to the radio getting breakfast.

I was absolutely mortified. So it turns out they have security cameras all over their house. I had absolutely NO IDEA.

AIBU to think they should have told me? I feel like they’ve completely violated my privacy and don’t think I ever want to see them again. I mean who knows if they had cameras in the room I stayed in? In the bathroom?

I’m so angry.
@itsgrand lucky you that you nor your family have ever felt like your home was not secure. My in-laws were burgled while they were away, a friend was robbed at knife point inside her own home. We all have cameras now! I guess we could turn the cameras off and on when we go out/go to bed but it's just easier to leave them on all the time.
if it ever gets to the point that I need cameras inside my own home when I am there with my own family I will be away finding a cave up the mountains somewhere to reside in!!

That household sounds hideous. It's seriously weird.

Rainbowsew · 28/09/2021 17:18

Yanbu and those.poor.kids growing up in that environment knowing they'll be "checked up on" for all their misdemeanors!

I would telling them straight they should have told you about them, that they have violated your privacy and you are very upset by it...

Youdoyoutoday · 28/09/2021 17:22

@DianaBrigg

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. I did ask why they were looking at footage and she said they often looked back at things to settle disputes, for example who really drank the last of the milk and didn’t replace it. Apparently one of the kids saw me use the same knife on the butter and jam and got blamed for it. So they checked to see who really was the culprit.
How bizarre!
IsItJustMeOrYou · 28/09/2021 17:25

One word..... violation

AnnieSnap · 28/09/2021 18:48

OP, could you tell us what you think after having time to mull it over and having lots of replies here.

HalzTangz · 28/09/2021 22:17

@OlympicProcrastinator

That’s so creepy. Yes I think they should have told you. Why are they watching them back and commenting on your dancing if they are only there for security? I’d be livid YANBU.
I have cameras, when mine pickup movement I get a notification on my phone. I'm betting her friends got a notification and clicked on it and saw the dancing. I doubt they sat and watched a weeks worth of footage, that would literally take half a week to watch

Clearly after the fact rather than in response to a notification.

That's so creepy. We have security cameras but they're all outside apart from one in the porch, and we have a sign up saying we have them. We never ever watch them back and I'd find it creepy having them in the house, I wouldn't feel I could relax in my own home, let alone expect a visitor to feel happy about it! We used to have them in the house but only turned them on when we went out because we had a new kitten and we wanted to check what he was getting up to when alone 😂 We don't have them inside any more though.

HarrietsChariot · 29/09/2021 09:52

I have CCTV in the house, it's just normal and a commonsense thing to do. Cameras outside might catch a burglar's face but inside you have evidence of them in the act.

I turn them off when I have visitors though!

cushioncovers · 29/09/2021 09:56

Using cameras to find the culprit of who used the butter knife in the jam is awful. Those poor kids.

I know, it's pathetic isn't it?

It's not normal or commonsense! Why do you think it is?
IntermittentParps · 30/09/2021 13:27

Bitofachinwag TBF it IS quite good common sense in the way the poster says she has and uses it.
Using it to record visitors and settle minor household disputes though – NOT normal.

Mymapuddlington · 30/09/2021 13:29

I know someone with security cameras all over the house, I think it’s really creepy and she watches them at random times and her husband and kids have no idea that what they’re doing and saying is being watched by her.

Horst · 30/09/2021 13:53

Unless I’m the bathroom or bedrooms I couldn't get worked up about it.

We have cameras outside and a couple inside, we also have motion detectors, alexas we can drop into in multiple places and my router pings me every time a device connects or try’s to connect to my internet.

We do have signs up stating we have cameras in operation and all footage is password protected and locked away, also auto deletes after a set amount of day.

changedusername2021 · 30/09/2021 14:50

My parents house has cameras for security and theoretically we could log in and watch live or recorded.
The reality is that no one cares or has even set up to watch it but it can be accessed by the monitoring company If any of the sensors or panic alarms are set off. They call on speakers for the password and if the house is empty they can check each room. Each door and window has sensors. Initially it seemed excessive but my parents are vulnerable and their property exposed.
I can't imagine using the cameras to snoop or settle petty squabbles.
