To think they should have told me about the cameras

I was invited to stay with a friend, her husband and their 2 dcs. They have a lovely house and I was there for a week.

A few days ago I spoke to my friend to say thank you and she said that they loved having me, especially because I was so funny dancing away to the radio getting breakfast.

I was absolutely mortified. So it turns out they have security cameras all over their house. I had absolutely NO IDEA.

AIBU to think they should have told me? I feel like they’ve completely violated my privacy and don’t think I ever want to see them again. I mean who knows if they had cameras in the room I stayed in? In the bathroom?

I’m so angry.

I really think that people on here are far too quick to drop close friends, but even I would find it hard to ever trust people again who violated my privacy in such an awful way. Have they told you which rooms they filmed and agreed to delete it all at least?!

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 27/09/2021 18:38

I would be horrified and I wouldn't be back.

JacquelineCarlyle · 27/09/2021 19:27

I would be horrified too Op.

LikeACatInTheDark · 27/09/2021 19:29

Voyeuristic weirdos Angry

ALongHardWinter · 27/09/2021 19:31

I'm intrigued about the 5% who think the OP is BU!

thefourgp · 27/09/2021 19:34

Total violation of trust and privacy. I’d never speak to them again. They don’t respect you. What if you had to remove your top in the kitchen because you spilt something on it for example. It’s creepy as hell. You should make it clear to them how unacceptable it is and ask them to delete all footage of you.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 27/09/2021 19:35

That's horrific. At the very least, they should have told you straightaway as soon as they realized that you thought you were alone but weren't. I'm not even sure it's legal to film someone in a place where they could reasonably expect privacy, such as inside someone's home, and not inform them.

Charley50 · 27/09/2021 19:37

I agree this is awful and creepy.

galacticpixels · 27/09/2021 19:39

Ah that's so weird and even weirder that they admitted it so don't seem to think it's abnormal! If this happened to me I don't think I could continue this friendship.

Cherrysoup · 27/09/2021 19:39

Wow, I’d be really upset. That’s a huge invasion of privacy-you were dancing in your room?

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 27/09/2021 19:57

@DianaBrigg

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. I did ask why they were looking at footage and she said they often looked back at things to settle disputes, for example who really drank the last of the milk and didn’t replace it. Apparently one of the kids saw me use the same knife on the butter and jam and got blamed for it. So they checked to see who really was the culprit.
Fucking hell.

I mean I’d moan “oh fgs” if DH if he got jam in the butter but wouldn’t forcing him to watch a replay of the ‘proof’ Shock

Bloody weirdoS

Franklyfrost · 27/09/2021 19:59

They watch it back to establish things like who used the butter knife in the jam? Do they issue fines for inappropriate use of cutlery? At least you can rest easy knowing you used the right amount of loo roll as they’ve not been in touch about that.

I’d check in that your friend is okay and the cctv is not her partner being controlling. If it’s not that then I’d ditch her, so weird to secretly film your guests and then sit and watch the tape back.

Coffeeisnecessary · 27/09/2021 20:08

We have a camera for the dogs and I've never thought about telling anyone because I've never watched it back! I'll remember to warn people now! I don't want to be thought of as a weirdo!

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 27/09/2021 20:10

That's terrible!
Not telling you about the cameras.
Watching you back.
Laughing at you
Telling you they laughed at you

Wrong on so many levels!

Really weird. I have a camera for if I leave my cats when I'm away. But it's visible and I always tell the car sitters it's on, and that they can switch it off.

Chloemol · 27/09/2021 20:18

That is appalling. I would be going back and telling them you are horrified they think it’s acceptable to record people without consent, that you want all recordings of you destroyed immediately, and that you will not be staying with them again, and will be warning any others friends

I would also say that you are rethinking your whole friendship at the moment

JumperooSue · 27/09/2021 20:22

I had the same happen to me once, I house sat for a work friend, looked after her pets for her all week. A few months later she was talking about the cameras in her living room, i had no idea she had cameras in the house, I jokingly said ‘god I hope they weren’t on when I stayed’.. she just smirked and nodded. I felt absolutely violated.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 27/09/2021 20:22

Op cameras have been put up in our work place Hmm

Apparently for security and stock purposes.

I find them really intrusive.

We work closely with the public one to one and they do often tell us things.

Me and the other girls are constantly aware of them. No signage was placed to make people aware of them which I thought was the law.

Th are also voice sensitive so can hear all conversations.

There's only three of us and two of us have been there for 6 years and 20 years but there's still one In the staff room Sad

MissMarpleRocks · 27/09/2021 20:24

Oh my gosh. I’d be fuming & probably feel sick to my stomach. How on earth they thought it was appropriate to do this & not tell you while you were staying there.

They checked the CCTV to see who used the butter knife in the jam?

I wish I had the kind of life where that was an issue of significance.

LastStarfighter · 27/09/2021 20:29

I think it’s illegal where you have an “expectation of privacy”. Either way, it’s appalling. And creepy. Can you imagine the poor kids growing up thinking that is normal?

There was a thread a while ago where someone found out a family member was recording all visitors. A surprising number of people said that they did the same and didn’t see the harm.

QueenBee52 · 27/09/2021 20:31

Sounds like they actively enjoyed your not knowing there were cameras everywhere...

They sound very deceitful and I would not be friends with these people.. the friendship would be over..

This makes it even worse. It’s a family with zero privacy, who needs to check if their kid put a knife in the butter and jam?! I know a family with cameras all over their house including kids rooms and have always thought it was truly messed up.
Lorw · 27/09/2021 20:37

We have cameras in the living room of our home for security and for the dog, never thought to mention it, I mean they aren’t hidden but maybe I should tell people in case people think I’m weird 😂 we don’t look back at it or nothing, we use it mainly to check the dog while we are out 😂
