... to say that the Tories are in power indefinitely?

I said similar in a political discussion earlier with a friend and they got quite angry and said that was ridiculous.

I had shared some of the reasons I have this opinion: Labour factionalism and infighting (I am a party member and see it entrenched everywhere), Scotland, the split vote on the left, the Tory majority, conservative voting trends in recent years... I just can't see how the Tories will be ousted within at least the next 10-20 years.

I know the old adage about a week in politics... I wish we had more hope of reform in the system, and safe seats did not exist in their current form, but it is what it is.

Until electoral reform can take place, we're stuck with them. The country's fucked.

Snog · 24/09/2021 23:06

Labour don't seem much different in any case

antoniawhite · 24/09/2021 23:07

I don’t know, but god I hope not. If Labour would get on board with a progressive alliance, we might stand a chance.

Tailendofsummer · 24/09/2021 23:08

Yes they will be in for ever. Which is why I hope Scotland becomes independent one day. Though unfortunately that means they will be in even longer.

DdraigGoch · 24/09/2021 23:09

Until Labour get their act together, yes.

RNBrie · 24/09/2021 23:09

They are in the process of doing away with elections that are proportional representation, mayoral elections for instance. Its a power grab and there's fuck all we seem to be able to do about it.

Everyone should be joining Make Votes Matter. Even if you're a Tory, the idea that there's no opposition is bad for us all.

Iamthewombat · 24/09/2021 23:11

No, they always balls up eventually. Sleaze did for them last time and it will be sleaze that ends their tenure next time.

PieMistee · 24/09/2021 23:12

Unless the left manages to take more control over the press and social media we are fucked forever more.
People seem to like being fucked over and will keep begging for more.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 24/09/2021 23:14

Sadly I think you’re right. What do Labour even stand for these days?

DerAlteMann · 24/09/2021 23:15

Whether Labour can get their act together is irrelevant if they can't re-establish themselves in Scotland. Unless that happens sooner, I reckon the Tories are good for another 10 years.

jewel1968 · 24/09/2021 23:16

Elections are lost not won - goes the old saying but this government is really testing that. I think it is difficult to predict.

nancy75 · 24/09/2021 23:17

It’s funny that Labour need to get their act together to get a voter but millions are happy to vote for this govt while they merrily drive us to hell in a handcart.
Never have I seen such a bunch of self serving, pocket lining, dishonest greedy, incompetent toerags as we have in power now - yet Kier Starmer is the problem?

womaninatightspot · 24/09/2021 23:25

I feel politically homeless can't vote SNP due to their stance on women. Ditto Lib Dems. Keir Starmer saying he wants single sex spaces for women gives me hope but I await the but of course TWAW and therefore we mean them too. Naturally liberal, leftie, socialist, firmly believe the way to lift people up is education.

Tailendofsummer · 24/09/2021 23:27

If Scottish Labour decided to present a viable alternative for women up here to vote for they'd have a big chance, lots of us unable to vote SNP/Green etc.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 24/09/2021 23:32

You’re possibly right but it’s mostly because Labour are so awful.
I’m a Tory normally but I utterly despise the current government as they are useless and their policies are pleasing no one at all.

willrufford · 24/09/2021 23:41

As a lifelong Tory, from working class Tory Parents I am very unhappy with what we have now.
The answer might be to join the Conservative Party and change it.
When we can more easily travel (personal reasons) I am looking forward to meeting and finding out about the local parties of the 'Red Wall' seats.

That is where change will come from. I think the people there are not old war horses from 20 years ago brought up on stories of Mrs Thatcher.
The Moggs days are numbered. I hope!

^This.

Labour are not awful. They’re pretty fucking good. Not perfect, but pretty fucking good and in a different universe from this self serving over privileged wife cheating public robbing public services dismantling lot currently in charge of embarrassing us in front of the whole world. But they’re not being measured with the same stick, are they? If you held the Tories up to the same standard Keir is being held to, we’d have taken away their citizenship and kicked them into the sea long ago.

Gingernaut · 24/09/2021 23:44

@Iamthewombat

No, they always balls up eventually. Sleaze did for them last time and it will be sleaze that ends their tenure next time.
They have wasted billions on cronyism, Boris brought his girlfriend into No. 10 before marrying her and knocking her up and we have the highest death toll in Europe.

They've ballsed up and they are beyond sleazy now.

There is no credible opposition.

The Lib-Dems are self-serving, venal power crazy twats who partnered up with the Tories at the first chance they got, the Liberals are nowhere, the Greens have no idea and Labour are so riven with cancel culture, Momentum, accusations of antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti trans, anti gay, anti anything, that they don't have one coherent policy.

MoltenLasagne · 24/09/2021 23:47

Tbh even without the petty factionalism and inability to define 51% of the population, unless Scotland start voting for Labour again, or huge swathes of the South do for the first time ever, then we're still gonna be Tory-land ad infinitum. And if Scotland go for independence then God help our chance of achieving a decent opposition ever again...

nancy75 · 24/09/2021 23:47

@EatYourVegetables - exactly! A few years ago Miliband was unelectable because he pulled a weird face eating a sandwich, now we’re quite happy to vote for a man who cheats on his wives, gives tax payer’s money to his mistress, embarrasses us across the globe & hides in a fridge. How the fuck has he got away with it?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/09/2021 23:48

Constituency reform by the Conservatives favours the Conservatives.
The SNP have neutralised the Scottish Labour vote.
Labour are a shambles (I was a party member)
Without Scotland Labour would need to sweep England in a way they've not really done. They aren't showing signs of doing that.
So YANBU.

tttigress · 24/09/2021 23:52

I don't think they are in indefinitely.

However Labour seem keener to fight themselves than the Tories, just like in the early 80s, therefore the Tories have a pretty easy ride. Also labour is now less aligned with there traditional base, the working class.

I doubt the Tories will get dislodged at the next election, maybe the one after that.

Autumngoldleaf · 24/09/2021 23:52

What safe seats! The last election and the so called smashing of the red wall means there are no safe seats.
I don't know what's to become of the labour party I hope kier can sort them out. We need to get clever people into politics people with background to match what's going on.

Education secretary with no education experience?

Someone in charge of the NHS with no hospital experience??

How does this happen.
NHS and education need lifting out of politics and given a special cross's party /experience team.

Autumngoldleaf · 24/09/2021 23:53

Tti I think Labour has taken a machete to cut itself off from its tradition working class base. Sad

tttigress · 24/09/2021 23:59

All governments run out of steam eventually, it is just somewhat disturbing that Johnson has an opinion poll leader over Stammer. Even if Johnson was more or less doing the right thing, you would expect more people against him in opinion polls due to the length of of time the Tories have been in power. Strange times.
