There's a few tees I like, not so keen on the girl slogan ones as I'm a women, but I like this one and the WOMAN one .. but would I be a bit of a contradiction? As it goes I'm not married, but I'm technically engaged 😬

Theoldprospector · 22/09/2021 23:28

Doghairismyglitter doesn’t even go here.

FirewomanSam · 22/09/2021 23:35

Personally I think OP should buy four of the t-shirts. Four for you, OP!

Doghairismyglitter · 23/09/2021 00:10

@Theoldprospector Eh??

AICM · 23/09/2021 06:43

@Doghairismyglitter

I love slogan tee’s, my favourite one I own has a large gravestone on it and says “R.I.P All The Men Who Told Me To Smile”

You can be a feminist and a SAHM. They’re not mutually exclusive; if you like it OP, wear it! 🤘🏼

Would you be OK with a man wearing a t shirt that joked about murdering women?
OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 23/09/2021 06:50
@Mrsfrumble Yes that sounds about right!

@CorrBlimeyGG Has she supported transphobes though? Really?
No she has not. Some people have obviously never read what she wrote at all.
And to say that male bodied (and yes, sometimes actual sex offenders, Karen White anyone?) should not be housed in female prisons or otherwise have access to female spaces is not transphobic or equating trans people with sex offenders. It is safeguarding.

SheWoreYellow · 23/09/2021 06:55

I don’t understand your comment about not being married though?

Otherwise, I’d say why not get the T-shirt.

FloconDeNeige · 23/09/2021 06:59

Of course you can wear whatever you want!

But as an unmarried SAHM I’d say you’ve got more important things to worry about than your wardrobe.

Doghairismyglitter · 23/09/2021 06:59

@AICM it’s tongue in cheek. But in light of how many women are actually murdered by men and constantly sexually assaulted and harassed, if it puts even one male off making inappropriate comments to a female then it’s done something positive

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/09/2021 07:00

@PlanDeRaccordement

Yeah I still think the T-shirt’s message is ambiguous at best. I understand now it’s a joke from Mean Girls, but why use a joke from one of the most sexist, nonfeminist, cliched US high school films? I mean the main character fails math so she can get with a boy. Then her friend finds out she likes this boy, so engineers to snog with him in front of her. And it gets worse from there.

I now feel like the T-shirt slogan is definitely a piece of trolling making fun of feminists by likening us to the Mean Girls.

Did the concept of satire completely pass you by? Confused
TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/09/2021 07:02

True feminists, they don't support transphobes like JK Rowling.

Where to begin with this comment?

borntobequiet · 23/09/2021 07:05

All slogan T shirts are irredeemably naff, OP. Get a nice plain one instead.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 23/09/2021 07:09

@FirewomanSam

Oh my god I think this is the funniest thread I’ve ever read on here. I can’t believe how seriously and earnestly some people are debating over a novelty t shirt with a Mean Girls reference on it Grin
I agree - it's like I've slipped into some parallel universe.

I used to wear slogan t's a lot, I had no idea I was prompting such strong feelings by doing so.

Wear it or don't wear it, it's only clothes!!

FloconDeNeige · 23/09/2021 07:11

Let’s not get de-railed by TRAs in a trans bun fight!

I do think that there’s something in the idea of being a SAHM to support a husband’s career progression though. That’s upholding the patriarchy and is inherently un-feminist.

Being a SAHM through financial necessity, SEN etc isn’t the same although it’s not exactly ‘smashing the patriarchy’.

MacNTosh · 23/09/2021 07:22

I think this one is much better

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 23/09/2021 07:32

It absolutely is a take on the Mean Girls quote. I like the t shirt and have a few from the Spark Company. I also like how they try to produce as ethically as possible. If you want it, get it!

EmeraldRaine · 23/09/2021 07:34

I mean you can wear it but... Why would you want to?

coodawoodashooda · 23/09/2021 07:39

Id wear that and i work.

RickOShay · 23/09/2021 07:40

@SecretSpAD

Oh when my nephew/adopted sons mum died he found a t-shirt of hers with the slogan "this is what a feminist looks like"

He wears it, with pride.

That’s sad and lovely at the same time Flowers
MitfordBlisters · 23/09/2021 07:49

@PlanDeRaccordement Did you watch Mean Girls all the way to the end? It’s a v v feminist film, with teen girls who obviously aren’t perfect learning about the cost of being “mean girls” and how it damages all of them. There’s a scene explicitly discussing how girls shouldn’t call each other those names because it gives men permission to do it, and the main character doesn’t just fail Maths to get with a guy - she then goes to the Mathletes final, wins it, then goes to prom in her very un-glam jeans and Mathletes branded jacket.

It’s a total celebration of learning your own feminism and growing up to support different kinds of women and be yourself.

It’s great!

FirewomanSam · 23/09/2021 09:12

Thank you MitfordBlisters, that’s the reply I wanted to write but couldn’t muster up the energy to do so! Declaring Mean Girls sexist and unfeminist because of scenes in the first act of the film and completely ignoring the rest of it… I despair!

coodawoodashooda · 23/09/2021 09:40

Yes.

Mrsfrumble · 23/09/2021 10:15

I do think that there’s something in the idea of being a SAHM to support a husband’s career progression though. That’s upholding the patriarchy and is inherently un-feminist.

Being a SAHM through financial necessity, SEN etc isn’t the same although it’s not exactly ‘smashing the patriarchy’.

The reasons that women become SAHMs are usually multi-layered and complex. In my case it has been all 3 of the things listed above at different points in time. Which is why it bugs me that it’s so frequently dismissed as being a purely ideological choice on here (although it makes it so much easier to be critical).

I’ve known mothers for whom the difference between being able to work when their children are young or not has been down to having fit and healthy, retired grandparents who live nearby and are willing to provide free childcare. As this is a matter of luck, not skill, why should the mother who has this at her disposable be a more worthy feminist than the mother who doesn’t?

And let’s not get started on the pitiful statistics on mothers of children with SN and disabilities who are unable to work outside the home… How sad that being the only person who is willing and able to support your child apparently means inadvertently supporting the patriarchy.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 23/09/2021 10:47

I'd love to know what proportion of SAHMs are in that position because of solely wanting to further their husband's career, as opposed to, say, believing it's in the child's best interest to have a parental figure at home with them in their early years...

Probably much more likely that women either want to stay at home with their children, or that it doesn't make financial sense to return to work.

Luckily I was able to return to my old job after 3.5 years off with DD and am currently doing the same for my DS.

To suggest I'm unfeminist because I am 'putting my husband's career first' (which might be a positive side effect but was certainly not even one consideration in my decision to be a SAHM) and shows a poor understanding or value of the role of parenting young children.

fiveinfulham · 23/09/2021 10:50

There are certain posters for whom the word ‘SAHM’ in a title is like a klaxon going off. Ultimately, it says more about them than anything else. Don’t get into it.
