To think high heels look a bit silly?

I'm a sucker for them (or used to be) but the more time goes by I'm starting to feel they have very little place in my wardrobe.

I feel overdressed and try to hard in them. I think it's hard to pull off the effortless look in heels. But I also feel like something is missing when I don't wear them on a night out for example.

I feel like it's yet another pointless trend for women to continue following - that are really uncomfortable and serve no real purpose.

I've also noticed younger women rarely wear them - have they seen the light?!

Or AIBU for feeling this way

I only wear them for an occasion, like a wedding or a party.
Even then, the heels are blocky ones, so easier to walk/dance in and pretty comfy. I never wear stilletos. They are horrible.

WellLarDeDar · 22/09/2021 11:13

I adore heels, I feel more sophisticated in them. I like wearing them for weddings, parties or going to the pub or cocktail bar or if I'm going to lunch with my husband or friends. But definitely wouldn't want to be in them all day and only wear them if I know I'll be able to sit down and wont be expected to jump around like at a club or a concert.

Coogee · 22/09/2021 11:17

I like wearing heels. I feel good wearing heels.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 22/09/2021 11:21

I like wedges and fat/wide heels but me and stilettos never got on! But happily my work place don't like us in heels so l get to wear my loafers all day long!

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 22/09/2021 11:21

@RiotAtTheRodeo

People who think that because heels aren't currently in fashion it means they've permanently consigned to the fashion trash heap are deluded.
Eh, they've been out of fashion for men for a good long time now, and look unlikely to see a large scale revival.
LastToBePicked · 22/09/2021 11:28

I honestly think the trend over the last few years of maxi (or midaxi) dresses with trainers is one of the best ever. Comfortable but feminine, easy to dress up/down. It will be a sad day indeed when it’s no longer stylish.

I think it’ll last a very long time. Comfort is very hard to give up once you’ve got used to it.
Snog · 22/09/2021 11:41

To my mind they look like pandering to the patriarchy.

And?

I was being fairly tongue in cheek, but pointing out that it's not inevitable that they'll come back into fashion again. They were the height of fashion for men once upon a time. Now, not so much.

Shoes do need to provide support. Walking barefoot is fine, but as soon as you put your foot in shoes you prevent it being able to move as freely so they shoe needs to be supportive.

@olidora63

Our manager late 50s who is same age as me and very skinny wears very high heels …she actually looks really common..no not jealous but think she looks very unprofessional …sorry!
What defines common I wonder?

Also, why add sorry? You aren't sorry at all. Own your nasty judgement.

Binkybix · 22/09/2021 14:48

There are new minimal support and flexible shoes I buy for my kids. I think that’s the dream combo for feet. Allows them to build muscle and strength.

arield · 22/09/2021 15:21

[quote postingfortraffichere]@arield nothing is wrong with being shorter, don't try and twist this into 'OP is now short bashing' because I'm not - at a guess it may be irritating for the person when your eyeline is much lower than everyone else's if you're incredibly short.

Though I have no idea, it was another poster who is short that said this so maybe ask that poster

I really didn't aim my post at you.

GreatPotato · 22/09/2021 15:26

I think they've started to look really dated now. I'm so pleased young women don't comply with this nonsense anymore, long may it last.

I like to think I'm a trendsetter, I took a decision never to wear heels again about 6 years ago Grin

Boood · 22/09/2021 15:29

Heels are dated.
Heels are ageing.
Heels have a middle aged secretary vibe.
White trainers are middle aged.
Northerners wear heels with their bodycon.
Flats are frumpy.

Be younger, look younger.
Keep up with fashion.
Reduce your consumption.
Spend more, buy less,
Please yourself.
Don’t offend me,
Don’t judge.
Don’t get it wrong.

Women? You’re doing it wrong.

rhonddacynontaf · 22/09/2021 15:34

I love that heels are no longer a thing. Watching women tottering around everywhere always made me deeply uncomfortable. Yes you might feel 'powerful' in them but you're ruining your feet!

LookAtMoiPloise · 22/09/2021 15:34

What a pathetic remark.

rhonddacynontaf · 22/09/2021 15:35

@Thewiseoneincognito

I love heels, the silhouette is elongated and posture refined. You put on a pair of heels and you feel ready to conquer the world, flats and sneakers just don’t do that. Cheap heels are instruments of torture and ill fitting designer ones the same. Flats are frumpy unless they’re Louboutins or Chanel’s, even then it’s a tricky look to pull off.

I definitely think it’s an age thing, take a walk around any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night and there’s plenty of heels around on the younger crowd, flats and a short dress do not mix.

YABU to think a shoe can impact somebody's purpose. Someone watched a bit too much SATC.
Lesserspottedmama · 22/09/2021 15:49

God no, haven’t worn them since my wedding day ten years ago! Goodness knows why I felt the need to wear them then! Awful things; to me they are in the same category as thongs - something that is bad for your body and uncomfortable/painful but women have been conditioned to put their appeal to men above those things. Thankfully this is becoming less and less the norm now.

Siameasy · 22/09/2021 16:01

I find it hard to dance in totally flat shoes and prefer a small wedge eg the espadrilles that are around at the moment are a happy medium.

arield · 22/09/2021 17:23

Our feet aren’t perfectly evolved to walk in shoes and ballet pumps offer no support to the arch. They’re not great for feet at all. I thought that was common knowledge?

It is common knowledge
hangrylady · 22/09/2021 17:53

I wouldn't wear flats with anything dressy for going out because heels make my legs look better but I'm aware I'm probably not particularly the height of fashion these days. I'm in my forties so I can live with that.

MiskyT · 22/09/2021 18:19

If I need to be extra efficient at work, I make sure to wear my heels! Weird I know, but I get much more done than when I'm wearing flats...

Rosesareyellow · 22/09/2021 18:43

I think high heels look amazing - but not quite amazing enough to warrant the sore feet. I only wear them if I’m going out for a nice meal and so will be sat down most of the time - which I guess defeats the point in wearing them actually, no one sees them 😂
