To think high heels look a bit silly?

I'm a sucker for them (or used to be) but the more time goes by I'm starting to feel they have very little place in my wardrobe.

I feel overdressed and try to hard in them. I think it's hard to pull off the effortless look in heels. But I also feel like something is missing when I don't wear them on a night out for example.

I feel like it's yet another pointless trend for women to continue following - that are really uncomfortable and serve no real purpose.

I've also noticed younger women rarely wear them - have they seen the light?!

Or AIBU for feeling this way

I don't think I will ever wear heels again.

Asleanna · 21/09/2021 21:11

I hate heels! I only tend to wear them to weddings nowadays (and usually only a short heel!)
I usually wear heel boots on a night out, mine are super comfy!

Draineddraineddrained · 21/09/2021 21:11

High heels are a bit like make up for me - I like the idea of it and have been known to buy some from time to time but it's just never going to be something I can be arsed with.

whatswithtodaytoday · 21/09/2021 21:11

I think they look very unfashionable at the moment, and as you say a bit silly. However I'm sure they'll come back into fashion again... they always do!

Happylittlethoughts · 21/09/2021 21:12

I can't wear them again, and haven't done for a while. However, my life is a little sadder 🤣I get a buzz if I try a pair on!

UnsolicitedDickPic · 21/09/2021 21:12

I love high heels and I do feel like they pull an outfit together in a way I can't quite seem to achieve in a flat shoe. But, my God, I couldn't and wouldn't wear a heel again if you paid me.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 21/09/2021 21:12

I have never been able to wear heels. My sisters said I walked like Oda Mae Brown when I wore them 🤣

I see people walking in them with their legs stomping forward and their bodies leaninh back, like Rachel from Love Island.

It's not a good look. Some people can carry them off. Some can't, but one thing I can say is that they never look comfortable on anyone.

Bobsyer · 21/09/2021 21:12

I haven't worn heels any higher than a stacked Cuban on some beloved boots for probably five years. I just can't be arsed.

LolaButt · 21/09/2021 21:13

I love seeing women wearing trainers on a night out these days. When I think of all the pain and blisters I used to get just to look a certain way… these ladies are living right!

5zeds · 21/09/2021 21:13

I think they’re ridiculous but if you have short legs make you look longer.

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 21:14

Yes there's something about wearing flats in the evening that makes someone appear MORE confident - as if they don't care quite as much about being judged on their appearance! Maybe I'm being harsh

I love heels and wear them a lot. If you don't like them then don't wear them. It's that simple.

5128gap · 21/09/2021 21:15

I never wear them in the day time anymore. On nights out I do, and so do the vast majority of other women. The exception being teens/students who wear trainers with their lycra dresses and full make up. Its a very young look where I live though and older women would look a bit unusual if they emulated it here.

minipie · 21/09/2021 21:15

Yanbu. Objectively they are completely ridiculous, why would we do that to ourselves? Imagine explaining them to an alien.

fluffyteach · 21/09/2021 21:15

I love a flat brogue!

I’ve worn heels before but now I’m a flat shoe all day long. I last wore heels on my wedding day and even then had trainers on by the evening!

MatildaIThink · 21/09/2021 21:16

I think they have their place, but I do not wear them regularly. I always found walking in heels easy, didn't bother me and didn't get blisters etc. I would wear them to a black tie event or something like that but would not wear them around the house or in the office (if wearing them in the office was allowed).

thepeopleversuswork · 21/09/2021 21:18

It depends.

Heels can be either empowering or massively infantilising, depending on who is wearing them and how.

My boss never goes anywhere without her Manolos on and she is absolutely kick-ass. But if they are worn in a way that suggests you’re only doing it to blend in with the admin pool they just make you look young and malleable.

Lasttimeneveragain · 21/09/2021 21:18

I am short and I would never abandon heels completely. Mine are very much for work/the office. Unfortunately, I WFH currently so I rarely wear them. I wear flats about 99% of the time now but I miss how I feel in heels. They do give me a confidence that nothing else can replicate.

FortunaMajor · 21/09/2021 21:20

I've just read a book about 9/11. One of the first emergency workers on scene talks about being really confused by the sheer number of abandoned shoes until he realised they were high heels kicked off in and around the buildings as women fled for their lives and couldn't in the shoes they had on. Makes you think.

LexMitior · 21/09/2021 21:21

I think they are ageing; most women around here have abandoned them.

It looks odd in the office - I don't see anyone wearing them. If someone does, it all looks a bit "Private Dancer", which isn't a work look!

Brokenrecord3006 · 21/09/2021 21:23

I don't really understand why they exist or why women choose to wear them. They're awful!

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 21:24

@LexMitior they make me feel five years older when I wear them too yes!! Block heels I think are still a good look some of them, it's stillettos that I think are ageing

God I wish I had been a young person these days, no one wore trainers when I was a lass.
But we at least had DMs

I love high heels, but I love them on anyone, they make man or woman look fabulous.

Still never wear them anymore though

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/09/2021 21:27

Since lockdown, I've noticed that the vast majority of staff have abandoned the things (and ballerinas) in favour of supportive, full foot covering shoes - so much so that the one woman remaining who is wearing her sensible, not too high heels was grumbling about how much they were making her feet hurt at work the other day.

As I haven't been able to wear heels for about 6 years, I'm quite glad that people are catching up with me now.

LexMitior · 21/09/2021 21:27

A block heel might be okay - and I notice women are now encouraged to wear chunky soled shoes which increases height. Maybe that's what you do now?

But stilettos? Like wearing a cravat or a corset. Starting to look... odd and old.
