To think high heels look a bit silly?

I'm a sucker for them (or used to be) but the more time goes by I'm starting to feel they have very little place in my wardrobe.

I feel overdressed and try to hard in them. I think it's hard to pull off the effortless look in heels. But I also feel like something is missing when I don't wear them on a night out for example.

I feel like it's yet another pointless trend for women to continue following - that are really uncomfortable and serve no real purpose.

I've also noticed younger women rarely wear them - have they seen the light?!

Or AIBU for feeling this way

I used to wear heels most days. Now I'm older with bunions, I gifted all my heels to charity. Never again!

OublietteBravo · 21/09/2021 21:55

I think they were going out of fashion before covid. I remember noticing that Clark’s in Ireland (Cork) didn’t have any heels in the women’s section in August 2018 (we were buying school shoes).

godmum56 · 21/09/2021 21:56

I have never been able to wear heels...not even what passed for heels in my teen years (70's) because I have got short wide feet and high arches. I used to love cuban heeled boots but my trashed knees won't even allow that now.....still lobe my purple DM bikers though

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/09/2021 21:57

I think lockdown has put paid to them for me for all but the dressiest of occasions. Just not worth the hassle!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 21/09/2021 21:57

@FortunaMajor

I've just read a book about 9/11. One of the first emergency workers on scene talks about being really confused by the sheer number of abandoned shoes until he realised they were high heels kicked off in and around the buildings as women fled for their lives and couldn't in the shoes they had on. Makes you think.
Having been a teenager in the era of the Yorkshire Ripper, I hated heels for two reasons. Firstly they were bloody uncomfortable. Secondly I couldn't run in them.

I just didn't see the point of putting myself at any more of a physical disadvantage. I had a couple of pairs I wore a total of a few dozen times - nothing more than 2".

Icenii · 21/09/2021 21:58

I think they look dated but, being under 5 foot and working in a male dominated environment I do feel I need to wear them. Even from a practical POV, it's feels better when standing and talking with the males that I have that extra bit of height. It's hard to explain if you're not exceptionally short.

I prefer winter where I can wear chunky heeled boots.

KittyBurrito · 21/09/2021 22:00

Oh thank Christ we can abandon them. Simply being comfortable all day, no matter how far you walk or how many hours standing, is a revelation. No going back for me!

TweetyPieBird · 21/09/2021 22:00

Depends on the style of heels and what you wear them with. I love heels, but I don’t like the super thin type. Most women who wear them struggle to walk normally.

gofg · 21/09/2021 22:01

I'm 62 and I've never worn heels. Ghastly things.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/09/2021 22:03

Happy in my heels! Dont like them? Dont wear them.

tunainatin · 21/09/2021 22:04

I hate them and always have, both to wear, and the way they look. I think they ruin nice outfits! You're right, young people don't seem to wear them much, be nice if the disappeared for good!

Bloodylovecheese · 21/09/2021 22:04

@Happylittlethoughts

I can't wear them again, and haven't done for a while. However, my life is a little sadder 🤣I get a buzz if I try a pair on!
This with bells on... I'm in mourning for my beautiful heels Sad

I think they look very middle aged and secretarial.

I agree that seeing someone wearing flats on a night out makes them appear to ooze style and confidence.

chaosrabbitland · 21/09/2021 22:07

i havent worn heels in years and nothing could make me , now im pushing 50 i realise how daft they look and i must confess to having a secret snigger to myself when i see a woman in them trying and failing to walk naturally in them

Barney60 · 21/09/2021 22:07

As a short arse i love heels, have wore them from as far back as i can remember, but have noticed for the last few years i dont go "out out" any more to wear them.
I probably wouldnt be able to walk in them any longer truth told.

FortunaMajor · 21/09/2021 22:08

It's scary what women are conned into by the fashion and beauty industry. I used to work in an airport that mandated heels as part of the uniform and I could easily walk 6 miles on a shift. Women wanting/needing to wear flats had to pay for a doctor's note for an exemption, which was only valid for 3 months. I made my male boss walk up and down 7 flights in the tower in a pair of courts and the day after the uniform regs changed. The most depressing thing about it was the number of women who then threw a hissy about being made to wear flats. They were only being given the option, but you'd have thought we'd ruined their lives.

3luckystars · 21/09/2021 22:08

Yes the good is definitely gone out of them. Putting them on feels like using something environmentally unfriendly or smoking, it’s just no fun and when I see someone wearing them I feel sorry for them that they don’t know. They used to be great craic but not any more.

Haggisfish3 · 21/09/2021 22:09

If I can’t run in a shoe, I won’t wear them.

FortunaMajor · 21/09/2021 22:10

^ That was to @GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman

It stole my quote.

3luckystars · 21/09/2021 22:11

That’s a good test.

If I won’t wear something out of the changing room, like if I couldn’t walk out the shop wearing the item right then, I will not buy it.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 21/09/2021 22:11

There’s a lot of comments about them looking ‘aging’ and ‘old fashioned’ which just shows that the fashion industry is doing its job. They marketed high heels to us in the first place and now that’s been replaced and we are marketing trainers instead. They use young models to display all these flat shoes as fashionable just as they did with heels to begin with. Heels will be back and we’ll think of them as chic and youthful all over again.

I am glad to live in an era where flats are the fashionable choice of shoes (and therefore lots more choices), but the real problem is things being marketed to us as ‘youthful’ and ‘fun’ and we all buy into it. Wear trainers if you want. Wear heels if you want. But stop prescribing words like ‘aging’ and ‘dumpy’ because it once again it’s telling women there’s something wrong with their choices.

lannistunut · 21/09/2021 22:11

YANBU, they do look pretty stupid.

I haven't worn them for years and even then it was extremely rare, I just never really saw the point when flat shoes are comfortable and look better.

RoseStar · 21/09/2021 22:11

“@5128gap

Certain types of white trainer, especially when worn with a midi dress, have become very much associated with middle age

You’ve got me worried now.. which!? Or pic please?!

Josette77 · 21/09/2021 22:11

I love my flats and I love my heels. I question everyone saying how dated they look now. Fashion is more about a pair of shoes it's the whole outfit, hair, accessories, bag.
