To think high heels look a bit silly?

I'm a sucker for them (or used to be) but the more time goes by I'm starting to feel they have very little place in my wardrobe.

I feel overdressed and try to hard in them. I think it's hard to pull off the effortless look in heels. But I also feel like something is missing when I don't wear them on a night out for example.

I feel like it's yet another pointless trend for women to continue following - that are really uncomfortable and serve no real purpose.

I've also noticed younger women rarely wear them - have they seen the light?!

Or AIBU for feeling this way

So interested to read this thread. I was just thinking about heels - and my more formal work style, pre Covid.

I loved my heels. I've worn them to feel in work mode since I started work 25 or so years ago now.

In lockdown I obviously didn't wear them. I did wear some elements of my work wardrobe - I could not have worked in PJs. I didn't even wear jeans!

Since I've been back in the office a bit more, I've been wearing heels again. But God, yes: they not only feel uncomfortable & inhibiting (so hard to move easily, sore feet if at my standing desk, getting stuck in cobbles / uneven ground), they don't feel cool & empowering any more.

I feel quite naff wearing them; in fact my whole style for work is different. I'm not keen on my fitted dresses or anything too structured. I've a few pairs of wide-legged trousers in different colours, plain t-shirts, statement jewellery & feel so much better in that. It's so strange to think how my taste, and style has changed, and my priority on comfort, while still being smart.

I think I will continue to wear block heels, chunky boots, but stilettos / kitten heels, no.

captainpillows · 21/09/2021 22:13

Mid 40's, 5 foot tall here
I still love them, I just don't feel as polished in flats
Something about a heel gives me a bit more oomph
I don't wear them every day, and anything over 4" is not practical
I can take on the world in my heels!

EarringsandLipstick · 21/09/2021 22:14

I think they look very middle aged and secretarial.

Well, I don't think this! Surely there are many forms of heels, and they dot make someone look a certain age 🤔

Equally, imagine saying something looks 'secretarial', in such a pejorative way 🤨

Gwenhwyfar · 21/09/2021 22:15

@Draineddraineddrained

High heels are a bit like make up for me - I like the idea of it and have been known to buy some from time to time but it's just never going to be something I can be arsed with.
Makeup does no harm and can even be good for your skin, whereas high heels are bad for you.
MoltenLasagne · 21/09/2021 22:15

I used to love wearing heels going out - the extra couple of inches were invaluable in not feeling suffocated in a club in everyone's armpits.

3luckystars · 21/09/2021 22:15

Well I saw a nature programme years ago and when the female monkeys wanted to attract a male, they walked around on their tippy toes.
They looked the same as someone wearing high heels.

Men love high heels.

That’s what I think anyway.

nosecondchance · 21/09/2021 22:15

I never wear heels. I personally think they are just another evil scheme from the patriarchy, that prevents women from being easily mobile.

They are also terrible for your feet in the way they often push toes together.

Surely there should be ways to feel confident without immobilising and crippling ourselves?

As a middle aged secretary I'm quite offended by that. I don't wear high heels because they're bad for me, not because they make me look like the ordinary woman I am.
WetShirtScene · 21/09/2021 22:16

YANBU. Most high heels look ridiculous. Particularly the very high and pointy ones that seem to cram toes into an awkward position. Worse if they are sandals because then the cramming is on full display. They look bloody painful!

Lower heels can look nice though. I can't wear any because I have very weak ankles and topple if I'm more than an inch off the ground, but I quite like the look of chunky heeled boots.

OatBasedVanillaMacchiato · 21/09/2021 22:17

They’re a very outdated look.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2021 22:17

YANBU, they are really odd looking things. Sort of like weird forked hooves at a funny angle.

This is me also, I will still wear stillettos because I have expensive ones that would not be worth a dime if I sold them so ashame for them to go to waste but I would rather wear my cheese boots on em evening or block heels.

Isn't it funny how heels were not work during lockdown because I think ultimately heels are worn to impress others in most cases and to look 'sexy'.

I myself admit it - im not saying it's something to be ashamed of necessarily but it is the reality of why most people wear them.

I really love wearing heels - both to work (my choice!) and for going out. I always think if I'm showing my legs, the heels make them look more toned.
Women judging other women for wearing or not wearing heels in whichever situation is largely the problem with our society

I completely agree! It's quite sad when you out too much thought into it actually.

It feels like once again women have fallen for these tricks to focus on our appearance instead of other attributes.

As another poster suggested nights out you see men comfortable in their flats and jackets and women half naked hobbling or holding shoes int heir hand walking bare foot. It's quite sad really.

@FortunaMajor

I've just read a book about 9/11. One of the first emergency workers on scene talks about being really confused by the sheer number of abandoned shoes until he realised they were high heels kicked off in and around the buildings as women fled for their lives and couldn't in the shoes they had on. Makes you think.
If you're escaping from a boat or place you have to take your high heels off.
Bluebird797 · 21/09/2021 22:20

Well I tower over 6ft in my heels but I have no intention of stopping wearing them. I love my heels, I wear them because I like them, not because I'm looking for approval off anyone else.
If you don't like them, then don't wear them. But don't criticise others for their choice of shoe!

3luckystars · 21/09/2021 22:20

My sister once had a pair of high heeled sparkly sandals that had a thing between the big toe and second toe (like a flip flop). Who came up with that, it was totally insane, all the weight was pushing down against the toe thing. she wore them out once and the next day her foot was very badly damaged, cut and blistered. Crazy combination.

Takenoprisoner · 21/09/2021 22:21

Is it possible to learn to walk in heels, and if so, how? I'd love some pointers. I'm short and heels would be a nice option to have for glam occasions.

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 22:21

Oh please, posters suggesting this is a judgement thread are being far too sensitive.

What happened to being able to express and have an opinion and not like something!

On Twitter a while ago, a presenter who'd not been on TV during the various lockdowns said she'd enjoyed not "having" to wear heels whilst she'd been off air. Someone asked her why she wore them then, but didn't get a response.

I quite liked ye olde male fashion for a bit of a block heel, and am hoping they come back into fashion some day.

If people want to wear them, crack on, however I think a lot of it it's a misplaced feeling of obligation.

Hullbilly · 21/09/2021 22:23

I've always thought they were torture implements. Never wore them that I remember. Don't see the point of shoes you can't walk in. The only people I know who wear them are either quite small in height or they were forced to by the work they did.

Libraryghost · 21/09/2021 22:24

I love the look of high heels and I used to wear them religiously. Nowadays anything other than flip flops makes me groan. Once you break the habit there is no going back. They are torturous.. but they do look good.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/09/2021 22:24

I think ultimately heels are worn to impress others in most cases and to look 'sexy'.

Hmm, not the case for me.

Maybe a bit 20+ years ago when I was trying to be taken seriously in work. But I also dressed in such a formal way then - suits, shirts, proper jewellery. More makeup.

But it wasn't ever about looking sexy. I'm quite small so I liked the additional height & lengthening my legs. I just felt much more 'put together' in heels.

Cocopogo · 21/09/2021 22:24

I own several pairs but I never wear them

Youdoyoutoday · 21/09/2021 22:25

I loved my heels when I was younger but then I twisted my ankle and I've never worn them since. Shame though as I do love eyeing them up in the shops but it's a no from me these days.
