To not shower everyday?

Zwills · 19/09/2021 15:46

Especially if you don't work full time or leave the house everyday. Sometimes I prefer to shower in the evenings so I feel fresh before going to bed, other days if I'm going out I will have a shower in the morning or If I wake up earlier before the kids i have one then. I don't always wash my hair I don't always shower everyday if I am just at home and exhausted. Just wondering how honest everyone will be or do people literally shower everyday/twice a day without fail even if they don't leave their home. Obviously excluding when the weather the hot.

@NuffSaidSam

YANBU

But be warned Mumsnet is home to a large number of clean freaks who will tell you're absolutely disgusting and they shower 47 times a day, only stopping to change their bed sheets and wash their towels umpteen times a day.

Yet they think you're insane if you iron your clothes....
beachbarbara · 19/09/2021 16:44

These threads baffle me. Sweating, hair washing, dry skin and so on are neither here nor there frankly, it's your arse and fanjo that need washing. Some people's more than once a day too!

Maireas · 19/09/2021 16:45

@maofteens

I'm renovating my bathroom so can only use my daughters en suite, so it's every other day currently, and it was during lockdown too. Otherwise every day as I do feel pretty yucky by the third day. If I workout I don't shower before. I have a friends whose whole family shower about three times a day which I think is excessive and not environmentally friendly.
Three times a day? Are they coal miners??

I think this is just one of those things where we have to accept that everybody is different. We all have different lifestyles, are in varying environments, and have a different body chemistry so people just have to do what is best for them.

Personally I shower every morning. It takes me 2-3 minutes despite having fine waist length hair and I find it just sets me up well for the rest of the day. I like to feel totally clean and fresh. It helps my mental health massively. I don't feel clean doing a sink wash (and that actually takes far longer and more faffing about for me) For many people though with thicker hair or sedentary lifestyles, they can probably get away without daily showers.
It's certainly not one rule fits all. I've known a lot of people who don't shower each day and yes they do smell. Not a BO smell, but more of a sharp vinegar/sour smell. It's horrible and makes me feel quite sick.I think it's often their scalp? I've also known plenty of people that don't shower each day or use deodorant and they smell just fine. There are just too many factors to judge either way I think.

Genuine question for people who shower every day but don't wash their hair every day - how? Do you use a shower cap?
I don’t have an exiting overhead shower so hair clip and wash.

I do shower every day but washing my hair each day would eat up over an hour trying to sort out the frizz so I don’t bother. I just wash when it’s looking greasy (probably twice a week).

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 19/09/2021 16:48

Exciting*

CraftyGin · 19/09/2021 16:48

Showering every day started with Yuppiedom in the late 80s.

Before that, it was a bath every Saturday night whether you needed it or not (and no use of antiperspirants).

I remember a thread a year or two ago where one poster said she showered at night, showered first thing in the morning, went to the gym and then showered again. I couldn’t get my head around the morning shower before the gym - how smelly can you get after a night shower and putting on clean pjs? But each to their own!
BeautyQueenIamNot · 19/09/2021 16:51

Umm no I don’t shower every day, every other maybe every three days if I’m not doing anything, hair washed once or twice a week…

I dread to think how much your water bills are if you are washing every day…

🤣🤣🤣 well done @MeredithGreyishblue!
Memoriesofanoldlife · 19/09/2021 16:53

Since having toddler Dd I don’t. When I taught full time, I’d always shower and wash hair, make up etc before work. Now it’s every few days, some days we don’t leave the house/garden aside from a dog walk in the woods nearby. If I’m heading out to meet friends/play date and so on, I obviously shower, wash hair, make an effort

I could never go a day without showering when I wake up/get out of bed. Each to their own. YANBU to not shower every day if you don't want to. YABU if you expect everyone else to agree it's OK. No matter what you think, you will smell.
If you wear deoderant and change your clothes regularly, no you won't.

MN is so neurotic about hygiene. I'll bet you regularly encounter people who don't shower daily and you have no clue because despite what you are insisting, most of them don't 'smell'.

NuffSaidSam · 19/09/2021 16:56

Exactly this.

Err, that’s complete rubbish. Maybe YOU would smell. If that’s the case I suggest you need to see a GP. But make sure you shower before you go!

Why do you assume people smell if they don’t shower every day?

I shower every other day most of the time. On non shower days I have a good wash all over at the bathroom sink. I use far less water, obviously, and my eczema prone skin is much improved. I don’t smell.

No, hair gets wet but I don’t shampoo it. I just let it dry naturally.
Zwills · 19/09/2021 16:59

I actually couldn't find a post based on this so apologies didn't realised it was such a common question! A friend of mine claims to shower twice a day without a fail and believes those who don't are filthy animals 🙄 so just wanted to see what the majority of people do. I always wash my private parts daily/undearms and every time I use the toilet as well as after sex. When I do have a shower it's quiet long and thorough use a glove. If I don't scrub doesn't feel like i am clean! Then I enjoy just standing under the boiling hot water on my back Grin

They was a guy who used to get on my train in the morning and he smelt like a bed that hadn’t been changed so some time. There was just a sort of unclean smell from him. My station was first on the line and I was a creature of habit so sat in the same seat and he always sat in front of me. I take it he didn’t wash thoroughly in the morning. I always think of that smell if I don’t wash.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/09/2021 17:01

I do think it was all those celebs I think Ashton Kutcher and co spoke about not showering daily and everyone just sort of came out and said "Yup me neither" As though it's a massive relief. It's just gross. Some people only learned how to wash their hands properly in March 2020.

Bumbl · 19/09/2021 17:02

It takes me over two hours to wash and dry my hair, I'm quite jealous really of people who can wash their hair then just let it dry naturally and get on with their day!

I also don't shower everyday if I'm not going anywhere, I wash but not a full shower as I can't deal with getting my hair wet and going through all the faff of doing it.

Are they English/British? The Caribbean side of my family are quite mad about showering or cleaning in general. Like you wouldn't be allowed to get into a bed at my aunties without having a bath. No exceptions. Draining!
bubblepond · 19/09/2021 17:04

I do on work days but I work in healthcare and don't feel clean when I come home unless I shower.

On days off I don't always shower though

lljkk · 19/09/2021 17:06

I don't mind what you do or don't do, OP. Be happy.

TroysMammy · 19/09/2021 17:06

I only shower if I'm going somewhere, work or meeting friends. If it's for the purpose of say food shopping I just give my pits and bits a wash and off I'll go.

When it was lockdown and when I went food shopping, I wore the previous day's clothes, including underwear, no washing, did clean my teeth though. If people didn't maintain social distancing and keep 2 meters away and smelt me then tough shite.
