How often do you and your dc eat McDonald's?

I don't drive and there isn't one within walking distance so for us it's a rare thing on day trips. I'd have one more often as I'm rather partial to a McFlurry or a veggie deluxe meal and dc think it's the height of excitement Grin and think I'm a bit mean that we can't have one as often as their friends. Is it a treat? A regular thing? Just something quick and cheap to grab? No judgement from me, just curious as to what's normal as apparently I'm not normal 😂

I go when I'm looking after my nephew, so a couple of times a year.

He has the full works. I just have a couple of the hamburgers. I like the food, but these days I prefer to eat more healthily.

stripedbananas · 09/09/2021 09:57

Not that often really about 3 times a year as well as Burger King.

DC will eat McDonald's though every time they go into town with friends that's a given

idontlikealdi · 09/09/2021 10:00

Every three weeks or so, usually travelling or in a rush after a late running club or something.

I bloody love McDonald's, I'm not ashamed to admit it. The sausage McMuffins for me through pregnancy.

The fat / calorie comparisons between eg somewhere likeliest are very interesting.

If everyone is actually being honest, and only go mcds once a year or every few months, how the heck are mcdonald's surviving? And why are they so busy all the time 🙄🙄 who are the people that are packing out mcdonald's every day? The drive thru near us is always queued out onto the road...

SquirryTheSquirrel · 09/09/2021 10:23

I haven't had one since 1998. I don't really like the ethics of the company.

There are 300 self-selecting people in this thread. Could it be possible that it is not a scientifically accurate sample?

There are a lot of groups (such as teenagers and single people) who might well use McDonalds a fair bit but are unlikely to post on MN. "queued out to the road" is probably not all that many cars in the scheme of things. And all the people who go a few times a year averaged out still makes a lot of footfall.

I know my sister and her DP go quite often, if that's any help. Grin

Mayhemmumma · 09/09/2021 10:59

Think we went 4 times in the summer holidays - drive through because it's cheap and quick after an outing.

Term time i'd go once a fortnight maybe less.

Garman · 09/09/2021 11:01

Never, it's horrible food, I never understand it being seen as a treat. I'd only eat it if it was literally the very last available option!

0palescent · 09/09/2021 11:06

Maybe 10 times a year? Less than once a month I think. But I could be wrong as I've never really thought about it, and don't have strong feelings towards the place either way.

Our local ones are always really busy, queued out the doors. Much moreso than Burger King or KFC which are right beside it. Strange.

The last time was in Nicosia in about 2009.

We just needed somewhere cool to sit down.

For those not a fan of McD’s- what is your fast food alternative?

shivbo2014 · 09/09/2021 12:49

We have a takeaway once a week on a Friday its usually Mc Donald's as that's what the kids want. Sometimes pizza or fish and chips though.

CrystalMaisie · 09/09/2021 12:50

Never. None of us like the food 🤢

I'm trying to lose weight so avoiding fast food at the moment, but my preferences are for the traditional takeaways - fish and chips, Chinese or Indian food.
Scarlettpixie · 09/09/2021 12:53

Once or twice a year. Perhaps when on a long journey or after a late shopping trip. Ds probably goes once a year with his dad too. We aren’t that fussed and Ds and I are vegan so choice is limited.

I don't really like any fast food. It's not a health thing, I eat plenty of unhealthy food (e.g. cheese, ice cream etc) but fast food doesn't really do it for me. If I want a takeaway, my first choice is usually Lebanese/similar or sushi. If I just want something quick when out, I would prefer a sandwich or salad or similar
Parker231 · 09/09/2021 14:00

I agree regarding a takeaway - I would choose Thai or Greek as my favourites over a McD’s but as a drive through McD’s wins each time - their coffee isn’t too bad either.

VestaTilley · 09/09/2021 14:02

My DC is 2 and has never had McDonald’s.

I won’t mind him having it when he’s older as a rare treat, but it’s not great food for small children as it’s so full of salt, sugar and fat.

However (guilty secret) DH and I love it. I limit us to no more than one every six weeks or so, but we both really like it. If DH is WFH etc we tend to get one as a takeaway while DS is at nursery Blush

mindutopia · 09/09/2021 14:10

My eldest is 8 and has had it once, at a services on a long trip. I personally don’t find it nice at all and wouldn’t go out of my way for it. It’s sort of emergency only food for me (only the 3rd time I’ve been in probably 20 years).

Where we live: fish and chips. We're on the coast and salty chips eaten on the prom is the best food.

Elsewhere (with a wider range of possibilities): almost anything with noodles, or middle eastern food eg falafel. Neither of which are easily found here (at least not decent quality), although things are getting better as a couple of the Syrian families who came as part of the refugee programme have started catering companies.

Ninkanink · 09/09/2021 14:18

Where we live now (moved just over a year ago) there aren’t any nice takeaways at all which is such a shame as we do like a break from cooking every couple of months.

Where we used to live our usual takeaways were proper pizza from an Italian restaurant or Chinese. Not Indian because we regularly cook our own South Asian dishes and if we want to treat ourselves to that cuisine we prefer to eat out. No Japanese/Korean because because there weren’t any, but if there were both of those would definitely have been go-tos. Drive through McDonald’s or KFC once or twice a year; I’d have preferred BK to McDonald’s but there wasn’t one.

As I’ve said we’ve determined through trial & error that there really isn’t anything worth getting in our area, so now we just don’t have takeaways at all. 😔😔

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 09/09/2021 14:21

@FlatteredFool

Well so far I'm pretty normal if these answers are anything to go by!
I wouldn't be too sure, l suspect most people on here probably don't want to admit the truth 😂😂 It is Mumsnet after all! I'd say we have it maybe 10 times a year, but not particularly spread out evenly and will differ from year to year. We don't have it regularly as in once a week or fortnight but we can't afford it so maybe we'd have it (or other takeaway food) more often if we could 🤔😬
