Overused phrases on social media

The one I dislike most is 'and just like that'

'And just like that I have a (2, 12, 18 insert number) year old'

'And just like that she's off to university'

Am I alone in finding this exceedingly annoying?

It's not the only one.

'This dress is everything'
'This cake is everything'

Why do people copy these irritating trends? It's not young people either!

Someone's actually done it on this thread (sorry) but the insertion of a random name - "...but you do do, I guess, Karen" or some other random woman's name that people can smirk at.

"Chef's kiss"

"This is everything"

"And I'm here for it"

That thing where people misrepresent someone else's argument by writing a mini play e.g. They'll write:
Feminazis: All men are murderers and oppressors
Everyone else: No, they're not. Most men -Feminazis: Stop mansplaining! You're just proving our point!!

Wishingwell75 · 07/09/2021 11:28

Eek! Eeeeeek! What are you a 🐁?

Ghostsintheshelf · 07/09/2021 11:29

Oh and "y'all" when it's used by someone who's never been to America in their lives

Thefaceofboe · 07/09/2021 11:31

Eugh. I hate ‘am I the only one who...inserts something really common

Like, am I the only one who can’t wait for Christmas? Obviously not Hmm

Peanutsandchilli · 07/09/2021 11:32

At this time of year the 'All ready for year x' posts, complete with generic photo of generic kid in generic school uniform.

LBirch02 · 07/09/2021 11:32

X sleeps until.....

Rubyupbeat · 07/09/2021 11:36

I absolutely hate the word "Naice' used on mumsnet, what a ridiculous word!!

Maybebaby8 · 07/09/2021 11:37

It's not so much phrases that bother me.
It's people who post attention seeking post's. So checking into the hospital with no explination etc and then not elaborating on what the problem is. That boils me.

esloquehay · 07/09/2021 11:42

I abhor:

'All the feels'
#gymlife
#bekind
#simplepleasures
#anythingwithafuckinghashtag
'blessed'
'grateful'

And, the: 'Me' 'Also me' meme thing.

I had better stop now before I vomit...

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 07/09/2021 11:43

I need this in my life.

Wishingwell75 · 07/09/2021 11:45

"slid into my/his/her DM's"
I don't want anyone sliding into my anything, thanks very much.
Although I doubt it's something I need to worry about too much.

It occurs to me that all these new phrases are irritating yet most probably originate in youth culture and then because of the ubiquitous nature of social media they are hijacked by erm older people in a way that just wouldn't have happened even 20 years ago.
I'm thinking of the ridicule that people like Normski and Tim Westwood used to attract for being middle aged men talking like teenagers.
Obviously language changes all the time and maybe my revulsion of "you ok Hun?", "Making (bloody) memories", "yes bitch, bitch please" and the vile "needs gone/rid" just bother me because I am old and grumpy.
Trying to think of things we said back in the day, in the golden 1990's; seem to remember my Dad questioning my use of "wicked" etc. 😁

SmashingBlouson · 07/09/2021 11:47

All of these phrases are shite, especially making memories (for many people it = making debt they can't pay back!). When we are old, we will be trying to remember where we left our pants with great difficulty, not how much time and money our mum spent crafting with us.

SM is becoming ever more bizarre to me. It just seems like a big narcissistic, histrionic gloat fest. Lots of posing, virtue signalling and ranting, but no real action to make the world a better place (although there are cases where SM is positive, but it's a small amount in a sea of drivel).

SM is largely an advertising tool that can tap in to your emotional state so it can sell you shit you don't need and make you constantly feel inferior, angry and fearful if you let it control you in that way, otherwise it can be a good source of inspiration and connecting with people.

I hate feeling like this and think it's great that people are having fun and might choose to document it, but I suspect it isn't just that and it's more about projecting a certain image due to insecurity or being a bit of a narcissist.

SmashingBlouson · 07/09/2021 11:49

"slid into my/his/her DM's"

Whoaa! Who is sliding into who's dear mother? Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 11:49

Or people who say "I love you to the moon and back". Mate, fuck off to the moon and stay there

I don't mind that as my dad has been saying that to me for 50 years so it makes me smile.

sammylady37 · 07/09/2021 12:00

@BlotBangRub

I was today old when..........

It makes me want to hurl the poster off a cliff.

Ooh I was going to post that! I see it on Twitter a lot.

Also:

#boymum
#girldad
Making memories/feeling blessed
Posting birthday messages to people who are not on social media and therefore won’t see the message
And worse, ‘happy birthday in heaven’ posts.

cleosol · 07/09/2021 12:05

checks notes

It makes me irrationally angry.

Francescaisstressed · 07/09/2021 12:07

'we did a thing'
Anything inspired/inspirational that definitely isn't
I'm on tiktok and currently hating the classist comments - lots of 'what in the universal credit is this' or 'what in the council estate' on videos being sarcastic

ReeseWitherfork · 07/09/2021 12:09

"if you know you know"
SHUT UP.

Jackthementalkitten · 07/09/2021 12:18

It is what it is? Obviously Hmm

rjacksmiss · 07/09/2021 12:18

People who take staged pictures of their children like they are a prop and the term 'baby girl/gurl' for girls over the age of 2.

Namechangedforthreadbackafter · 07/09/2021 12:29

OOOOO yep I agree how about on here though the awful phrases people use!

LBirch02 · 07/09/2021 12:31

Jackthementalkitten

When people post that I feel like commenting “oh really? I always [thought it was what it wasn’t!” Grin

FrenchMustard · 07/09/2021 12:35

People referring to their kids as prince or princess and their DH/DW as my king or my queen....likewise calling them "this one".

"That's a bit of me" when referring to something you like

The fucking awful spelling of gawjuss instead of gorgeous which plagues facebook.

Also over using hashtags - #you#don't#need#to#tag#absolutely#everything#in#the#photo

TheLadyGrayson · 07/09/2021 12:38

Recently I can’t bear “the dress/handbag/dinner OF DREAMS”

Just say my dreams. It’s not difficult.

EishetChayil · 07/09/2021 12:40

"About last night" on any photo of absolutely anything from the night before.

"Sweet summer child" is fucking annoying too. So patronising.
