Overused phrases on social media

The one I dislike most is 'and just like that'

'And just like that I have a (2, 12, 18 insert number) year old'

'And just like that she's off to university'

Am I alone in finding this exceedingly annoying?

It's not the only one.

'This dress is everything'
'This cake is everything'

Why do people copy these irritating trends? It's not young people either!

How have we got through 3 pages without someone mentioning, “I’ll wait.”

I’ve seen a post going round saying something like, “I bet you can’t say you got to 40 without becoming a grandparent… I’ll wait.” We’ll you won’t be waiting very long will you as I’m sure there are more 40 year olds who aren’t grandparents than are!

youvegottenminuteslynn · 07/09/2021 10:27

"The boy done good" on Valentine's Day / birthday / Christmas with a picture of the present

"Date night with this one"

No reason at all they should annoy me but they do - I'm being unreasonable to be annoyed by them though, I know!

What is the only reason mn is the only sm you've signed up to?Confused

You sound like a vague fb status.

Onairjunkie · 07/09/2021 10:45

Ok, time to vent. I hate:

“With this one”
“This one, though” (that comma is never used, though.)
“Love you all the world” (it doesn’t even make any fucking sense.)
“So proud of ”
“You got this.”
“This is everything.” (Sycophants)
“Holibobs”
“Famalam”
“Queen/Qween/Kween/My Queen etc”
“Preach”
“Gurl”
“All the feels”
“Be kind”
“Girl boss”
“Making memories”
“Self care” (with some attention-seeking photo of some sort of low rent spa day or face mask at home, plus Prosecco.)

I think that’s probably enough to be getting on with.

Does your account have a special function to filter out all the irritating nonsense then?

Plenty of it on here.

ACreakingGateNeverStops · 07/09/2021 10:48

'Educate yourself' gets my goat everytime I see it.
I really don't think it's possible to use this phrase without sounding really patronising.
'Be kind' deserves a mention too for being meaningless tosh.

'Self care' I've never heard that one before and would have assumed it was a euphemism for pleasuring yourself !!! :)

I can't really get offended by most of them. There are words and phrases that make my eyes roll so far in the back of my head it hurts, but that's usually from influencers (or influencer wannabes) who want a reaction more than speaking the truth. I've always been fairly live and let live whether people are a bit twee or not.

HOWEVER, I really really get fucked off with the whole 'You Are the Author of Your Own Life Story' bollox. You're not. There's only so much you can control in life, and yes, you can choose how you react to certain things, but others really are out of your hands and I hate the 'if you want to do something just do it' mantra as it's not always possible.

Crimbo
Hun
Sweetcheeks

wandawaves · 07/09/2021 11:00

I hate the photos captioned "this kid" or "this puppy" or "this guy". Usually accompanied by a love heart emoji. This kid what??? Use sentences people!

blubberyboo · 07/09/2021 11:03

“Being my authentic self”

Cringe

Fashionesta · 07/09/2021 11:05

I get the rage from FB birthday posts.

"Happy birthday Ella. Turning 2 today. You are beautiful, spontaneous, funny, amazing etc etc."

Why address a post to your child who clearly is too young to have SM/read the post. Why not just tell your child FACE to FACE.

Grrr.

ShrimpBarbarian · 07/09/2021 11:06

@FoxgloveSummers

I feel bad for the “making memories” people, they don’t realise their tiny kids will forget the picturesque boat trip/lovingly created picnic/wild camping and just remember the bit where they threw up on mummy’s shoes after too many marshmallows.
I dont like the 'making memories' but I disagree with this. Both the 'mummies' and the dc will remember happy days

My sister goes on about “making memories” with her toddlers, usually involving a highly high-stress high-anxiety arrangement or event that causes great fuss and stress to her and is entirely based around the toddlers doing stuff.

I don’t have the heart to tell her that my DD now basically doesn’t remember anything before the age of about three, and odds on her toddlers won’t either 😂

LBirch02 · 07/09/2021 11:11

Slay
A whole mood
These may be teenage type phrases though

LBirch02 · 07/09/2021 11:12

The phrase ‘Two Beauty’s’ (always spelt thus) underneath some unremarkable looking people

LBirch02 · 07/09/2021 11:13

Blessed
Living my best life
Making memories

I can relate to this.
I often joke to my now adult kids that I shouldn't have bothered doing anything slightly interesting with them until they were at least 9 and saved myself £1000's as they cant remember a bloody thing!!
( I know that's not true, it's a joke before anyone jumps down my thought about child development and the early years!!)

TrickyD · 07/09/2021 11:16

Repeated phrases on MN irritate me.

For context ...
Fast forward......
Let’s call her XXX
Gifted, (why not Given?)
Any post starting with ‘So...’

And yes, kittenkipping anything ‘cheeky’.

I'm in love with this new lipstick
Confused

Why are we in love with everything, can't we just love something like we used to?

BlotBangRub · 07/09/2021 11:21

I was today old when..........

It makes me want to hurl the poster off a cliff.
