Anyone got any Adult DC with no tattoos

345 replies

flexandimpress · 02/09/2021 16:38

Has anyone got any young adult children who don't have tattoos and don't like them. My DS who is 21 said that he's never getting a tattoo as he doesn't like them. It made wonder how common are tattoos nowadays?

@Warmduscher
I mean basic as in a bit boring, standard

Again, my DC have interesting, artistic tattoos. They wouldn’t pay good money for a boring one - in fact, who would?

I’m not sure what a “standard” tattoo is either!

Jaxhog · 02/09/2021 23:43

None of the male adults in my family have them.

magicjo · 02/09/2021 23:45

@ssd

Mine have no tattoos. Too much sense.
Goodness!
Ilovetoddlerssaidnooneever · 02/09/2021 23:47

@Treaclepie19

Nothing against them, just never been bothered with getting one.
Exactly this. DH has three fairly large ones. Always hidden though, usually under his three piece suit and fancy shirt, and people often don't believe he has them
DramaAlpaca · 02/09/2021 23:49

I have three sons in their 20s. None of them have any tattoos. Long may it stay that way, tbh, though if they did I'd keep my thoughts to myself.

@Warmduscher
This must be a lost in translation thing - 'basic' is used to mean someone who is mainstream, standard, typical , unoriginal etc.
Meaning having tattoos is a bit dated....

What a dickhead comment 😂

Neither of my adult DS's have tattoo's.

I do.

IceLace100 · 03/09/2021 00:10

Me and my brothers (28-33) don't have a single one between us.

Always indecisive!! Grin

PumpkinKlNG · 03/09/2021 00:22

I don’t have a single tattoo as I don’t like them

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 03/09/2021 00:23

@LST well I do live in a council house so likely to be seen as a chav by some of the people on here 🤣

My last one was the best money I've spent. The majority of people don't have off the wall tattoos anymore. I've seen one similar to mine online but that's all

But how can they be dated when people are still having new tattoos every day and artists are still coming up with new ideas and techniques?

Is it just that your DC don’t like tattoos so went for an insult that’s doesn’t fit, but they felt would have a big impact?

Maybe your DC wear clothes that no one else wears, listen only to emerging bands, hold political views that are far outside of the mainstream? In which case, maybe tattoos, which have been around for many many years now, could seem a bit dated to them.

Probably a good job they haven’t got any then!

MollyBloomYes · 03/09/2021 00:39

Well my parents have three adult DCs without them. Not me, and I have brought SHAME AND HORROR UPON THE FAMILY Wink (they are mostly just resigned to them now but my dad in particular really gets shivery/freaked out by piercings and tattoos. Now he just rolls his eyes at me)

I'm the oldest at 35. We're all 2 years apart from the next one down. Only one is autistic (saw that mentioned as a possible reason in a previous post although personally I don't think it is, I know lots of tattooed autistics). Of all our jobs mine is actually the one that might be the hardest to have tattoos in, although I've moved away from the sector that made it practically compulsory to hide them (teaching). Now I'm in a role where it doesn't matter if they're shown...and already planning my next one. Plus thinking about what to get pierced next 😂

I think having tattoos is about as common as not having them in my age range and younger, it's such an individual choice

znaika · 03/09/2021 00:45

Am amazed that people don't think tattoos are a fashion and can date, nineties celtic crosses, tribal symbols and chinese characters- noone would get those now but were edgy at the time, what about stars and butterflies from 2000s? tattoo art and fashion has evolved but it's definitely on its way out, it will no doubt be back in 2-3 decades

Tattoos themselves, as a form of adornment, are hardly a fashion.

Some of the styles and subjects certainly are, though.

I'm fairly certain two of the younger professionals I manage don't have any, the rest have varying amounts. I've never mentioned mine; they may or may not be aware I have extensive pieces but I don't wear clothes that reveal them at work.

My family never made a big deal out of my tattoos although my mother preferred that I get pierced instead since those could be taken out. DH's mother never knew he had tattoos at all -- he has half sleeves and covered them around her.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/09/2021 01:12

Most of the adult dc I know dont have them. They're going out of fashion now though arent they? At least that's what I'm being told. Most look dated already. Everything that becomes really popular jumps the shark at some point and then becomes uncool.

Yes! It's like being stuck with a permanent 80s mullet- although they're back now :)

Apologies in advance for this massive gender stereotyping and to be clear this is absolutely not my own view but I was party to a surprising discussion between my DC (all under 13 so clearly do not have any tattoos!!)

So DD likes her temporary tattoos as do many other girls of that age but when she tried to give her younger brother a temporary "Superman" tattoo he objected saying "tattoos are for girls", I then said that was not the case for example there are male footballers with tattoos. Her older brother then has his say with "true but for most people it is usually girls (by which I take he means women)".

Whilst I don't not agree with this view (as clearly there are plenty of men with tattoos, I did however think it was an interesting observation that tattoos which 50 years ago were seen as mostly a "male thing" could now be seen as mostly a "female thing".

Greyhair59 · 03/09/2021 01:30

19 and 21 and don't have any, nor do friends of theirs, at least those I've met. But have recently been to europe where most visitors were italian and majority had them and generally quite big ones.

Newmum29 · 03/09/2021 01:33

None of my siblings have them (30, 35 and 37) and none of our partners all around the same age.

Kite22 · 03/09/2021 01:36

None of my young adults do, and, with the caveat that I don't tend to inspect their friends' bodies under shorts and t-shirts Wink I rarely see them on their friends either. That's quite a lot of young adults without (I watch 2 of mine play sports regularly, so see not only their own teams, but the opposition teams).
I think getting tattoos is less popular amongst 18 - 28 year olds than older folk.

owlbethere · 03/09/2021 01:57

@smokeyjoes

Personally I think tattoos are starting to look dated generally Just went mad didn't it for a decade or so Amy Winehouse brought it in I think I think people 20 and under 'gen alpha' will reject tattoos for clear skin as tattoos be seen as frumpy Often wondered if any health impact of having tattoo ink in the skin long term. Never see anything about it.
I’m laughing at the idea amy winehouse popularised tattoos.
thriftyhen · 03/09/2021 02:11

Three DCs in their 20's and none of them has tattoos.

caringcarer · 03/09/2021 02:55

None of my 2 sons have tattoos or piercings. None of them smoke either and 1 does not drink either. The 1 who does not drink, smoke or have tatoos has a gf with so many tattoos, and piercings.
