WIBU discharging myself from hospital

Carrottopppp · 30/08/2021 07:43

Sorry if this is long but it's important I tell you every detail to give the full story. Saturday evening I woke from a nap to find myself really sore and swollen in my groin and part of my pubis, overnight it swelled considerably went really red and painful to walk, sit, stand etc, I called OOH gp Sunday morning who got me an urgent appointment at our urgent treatment centre within A&E. App was at 9.30am with an absolutely lovely doctor who left no stone unturned and said I had developed an abscess and it needed draining urgently due to the risk of sepsis and the fact it had literally appeared out of nowhere and had grown 4x4 inches literally overnight. He got me an appointment with emergency surgical ambulatory care for 2.15pm yesterday, I attended the nurse took one look and said "no surgeon on this ward will touch that as it is on your pubis not your groin" she sent me back to urgent care and the doctor I saw that morning took me back to his room had another look then said its definitely a groin abscess but we'll let gynae have a look anyway, he sent me up to the gynae ward, 3 different doctors took a look but it was the most senior surgeon on the ward who said it actually is groin, not his area of expertise and also due to the amount of blood vessels in the area he couldn't touch it, so I waited and he came back and said I had to go back to emergency surgical ambulatory care as its them who deal with these things. So off I went an as soon as I walked in I was met by the same nurse who told me she had spoken to a surgeon up on surgical assessment ward and that they were waiting for me and expecting me and I may be treated as a golden patient I. E doctor has a look at it then books me a time to go back the next day and have it removed so off I went up to the ward.

Now this is where I started losing my rag mentally, met by a nurse on the ward who asks another lady to show me to my bed and she said "ill be with you in a minute" yeah you guessed it, never saw her again. I was shown my bed obs done and that's it never saw anybody again, nobody knew when the doctor was coming to speak to me, nobody could tell me whether or not I could eat or drink by this point I hadn't eaten in 26 hours, Its on my notes that I'm on antibiotics yet nobody asked if I was due any (I was but mine were at home as nobody told me when all this started that I would become an inpatient), I waited hours, I had absolutely no overnight stuff with me, I got frustrated and I went to the nurses station to let them know I'm discharging myself and have someone call me to arrange to go back in when it's convenient. The nurse couldn't even find the doctors number to call and ask permission to sign off the discharge, and with that I left.

So to clarify I'd been in and out of hospital for 12 hours, I was no further forward than knowing I had an abscess, i had 4 doctors, 2 nurses and a receptionist all having a gander at my genitals, I was passed from place to place, I walked in agony the entire length of our hospital 1/2 mile 3 times, nobody could tell me what the hell was happening and all the prodding and poking aggravated the abscess to the point it doubled in size and started spreading down my leg. WIBU, maybe I was but I was frustrated, tired and I hadn't eaten in 28 hours. I'm planning on attending A&E this morning and hopefully try and get somewhere, I'm due back in work tomorrow and need it removing as my job requires me to be on my feet for 8 hours a day and don't want to be walking around in pain.

Contact pals. It's amazing how treatment all of a sudden improves dramatically

Stilltalkstotrees · 31/08/2021 07:25

I hope your surgery goes well this morning and that your recovery is as quick and uncomplicated as possible.

Please try to put yourself and your recovery first over the coming weeks - your family and job will benefit most from you being back to full fitness as soon as possible and this will only happen if you make your recovery your first priority. Listen to the experts and act on their instructions.

Thanks
Rosscameasdoody · 31/08/2021 07:25
@Beckhamsmetatarsal yes because I knew it was actually possible to have 2 infections in one area, when you read about infections like mine it clearly says the area will appear red like mine does, it does not say that the so called redness is actually cellulitis, why make out like I asked for this, yeah I must have because I just love being in hospital away from my family, potentially losing a week's pay at work, who cares that maybe now my children go without as I've got next to no money next week but hey who gives a shit let's all be a big drama queen because apparently that's what I am 🙄 nope see me I put my family before myself, I'd rather hobble around work in agony just so they don't go without, just so I can keep my job, and just so I'm not a burden on anybody else, it's my partners birthday today and yep he's spent it all alone as I'm here getting myself sorted and that makes me feel so sad for him.
let's all be a big drama queen because apparently that's what I am

That’s EXACTLY what you are. The NHS is supposed to revolve around you otherwise you throw a strop and leave !! How about you STOP googling your condition for a start. It does nobody any good. You’re in the hands of people who know what they’re doing now, so if you need any more information ask someone who’s dealing with your condition. They’ll be able to tell you what’s relevant to you, based on their actual assessment of you and not some generalised article on bloody Google.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 31/08/2021 07:38

Best of luck today @Carrottopppp. Surgery is never nice, but when your anxiety is high for all the reasons you've given, it's scary stuff.

ELOU1111 · 31/08/2021 07:44

Hope you aren't spreading covid around the ward...just remembered you had flu like symptoms earlier in the thread and not had your jabs.
Why is everyone indulging this woman/girl by replying to her nonsense? She obviously craves medical attention despite saying she is afraid of it. Soon will be back to bragging about how long she has been without food and drink.

DeepDown12 · 31/08/2021 08:00

@ELOU1111 I do think we should show some sympathy for the OP. I've had her condition (on multiple occasions as for me, unfortunately, it is chronical) and while it is not life threatening (unless sepsis develops) - the pain is out of this world (and I've broken bones and had a C-section) and can affect ones thinking. At one point in the past, I was so traumatised by past experiences that I just didn't go to the hospital at all and ended up almost with sepsis. Completely foolish and completely out of character for me (and I never did it again) but - it is a tremendous pain and it does make your thinking all foggy.

Sirzy · 31/08/2021 08:02

Cellulitis can cause flu like symptoms.

I would be amazed if a covid test hasn’t been done pre surgery anyway.

Because you really think that, at the hospital, the doctors & nurses haven’t done a covid test and actually envisaged this could be a potential problem?

Come on. You are. just looking for sticks to beat the OP with. Covid or not, she needs surgery and needs to be in hospital anyway. She wouldn’t be waiting 10 days at home and risk sepsis Hmm

ELOU1111 · 31/08/2021 11:14

And OP is looking for sticks to beat hospital staff with. Shes there now. All good.

Turtletotem · 31/08/2021 12:19

I hope the surgery went ahead as planned and that you're on the road to recovery.

Zombiemum1946 · 31/08/2021 15:31

If it were your partner, you wouldn't care it was your birthday, you'd just want him safe and well. Your employer will understand that emergency surgery is not you skiving off. Your circumstances are unusual to say the least. This has already gone from abscess to cellulitis. Your anxiety will be sending you through the roof. I know it's easier said than done, but try to look to the longer term ie your being there for your kids, in a fit and healthy condition. Citizens advice should be able to find out if you can access emergency support to help feed the kids, it'll give your partner something to sort whilst you are in hospital. I can't stress this enough, look after yourself. For a number of reasons I've been in and out of hospital like a yo yo. I also work there. Recovery is usually quicker and better if you cut yourself some slack and let others take care of you like they want to. Stop thinking of yourself as a burden but rather someone they love. Again, how would you feel , and what would you want to do, if this was your partner and I would hope its exactly what he wants to do for you. Wish you well.

sillysmiles · 31/08/2021 15:59

I put my family before myself, I'd rather hobble around work in agony just so they don't go without, just so I can keep my job, and just so I'm not a burden on anybody else,

Well that's just an annoyingly pointless level of martyrdom. You are of no use to anyone unwell - work, children, partner. You have a responsibility to take care of yourself when you are responsible for others.

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 31/08/2021 16:20

Cellulitis is a spread of the initial infection throughout the body and can kill. My DH has been very close to death with it three times. He didn't have an obvious starting point though. He had to have a line inserted in his vein and hospital at home for a week , after leaving hospital, to give give IV antibiotics. Perhaps OP thinks that soldiering on with a rampant infection is in the best interests of her family?

iloveeverykindofcat · 31/08/2021 16:24

And I thought my mother had a martyr complex. OP I started this thread with quite a lot of sympathy for you but its totally evaporated. No-one likes being in hospital and no-one likes waiting around being unsure what will happen when. Everyone has responsibilities they're worried about getting back to. Acting like the most self-sacrificial person to exist doesn't make you superior. Its manipulative actually.

cultkid · 31/08/2021 20:27

How are you feeling op?

Zombiemum1946 · 31/08/2021 21:01

Has all gone well ?

UndertheCedartree · 31/08/2021 22:21

Hope all wen

UndertheCedartree · 31/08/2021 22:22

Hope all went well, OP. Just to add you can get an emergency foodbank parcel from Trussel Trust - ask your HV or school for a referral.

Carrottopppp · 01/09/2021 08:28

Update, was taken for surgery yesterday morning, I was given the option of a spinal so I took that instead of the general, all went well was over withing 10 minutes and taken round to recovery, never had a spinal before and definitely don't want one again very weird feeling being paralysed from the waist down, surgeon came to speak to me on recovery ward to tell me all was removed and the wound packed and that at some point in the future it is most likely going to come back 😔 I was taken up to another ward to wait for the spinal to wear off, took 4 hours before I could stand and an extra hour before I could take a step forward, I was given painkillers (refused morphine as I reacted badly to It in the past) and an iv antibiotic to cover me for a couple of days after leaving hospital, had to stay a little longer as my last 2 sets of obs showed low blood pressure but it slowly started going back to normal readings. I was given a sick note for 2 weeks, my discharge letter and was referred to the District nurses who will come out every day for 2 weeks to change my dressing. Surgery was done at 9am and I was on my way home for 2.30pm. No more antibiotics and a strict speaking to about over doing it. Now I have to deal with my employer, I spoke to them an hour before I was discharged I explained I was an emergency admission for urgent surgery, I have an open wound and can barely walk their response "so what do you need.... A couple of days? I had no words, oh yeah and I have to go and physically hand them my sick note 🤦‍♀️ bloody one thing after another.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 01/09/2021 08:36

You don’t need to be the one to give them the sick note. Get your partner or a friend to drop it off or post it to them. You need to rest and if they want you back in two weeks then that will include not doing unnecessary trips to work!

WitchDancer · 01/09/2021 08:36

That's great news, I'm so pleased you got it done.

With regards to your sick note, is there someone else that can drop it in for you? You have been told not to overdo things and I think that dropping it off yourself would come under that category.

Muchmorethan · 01/09/2021 09:05

Really glad it's all done OP. Low BP following a spinal/epidural is quite normal as they interfere with the bodies regulation system.

Why does the surgeon think it will reoccur?

In regards your employment, what do you actually do? Could you show "willing" and undertake some online training at home?

mdh2020 · 01/09/2021 09:08

I was admitted to hospital on Friday morning and told my inguinal hernia (in my groin) was inflamed and needed an urgent operation. This was performed on Saturday at 3.00pm because even if you are urgent there is a priority list and someone with a burst appendix, or who has been in a car accident or needs urgent heart surgery, takes priority. Leaving doesn’t do you any good at all. Hospitals are short of staff and some beds/ wards are closed due to lack of staff. They had to close a 6 bed room in the Assessment Unit on Friday night due to lack of staff. I hope you go back and get sorted out. Your husband (and his boss) and your boss, will just have to cope. If the operation is performed late in the day you may well have to stay in overnight.

Backtobacktheyfacedeachother · 01/09/2021 09:27

Post the sick note. You are sick, they can’t demand you hand it over in person.

Carrottopppp · 01/09/2021 09:34

@Muchmorethan it became clear during the surgery that apparently it wasn't an abscess but a sebaceous cyst that normally cause no problems has somehow become very infected, how have I had a sebaceous cyst surely I would have known I had one, I'm down that area every 2 weeks giving it a trim, anyway because I've apparently had an SC I'm more likely going to get another and its most likely going to go the same way. In regards to my job, I work for a well known supermarket brand in their distribution centre taking products on a pallet using a pedestrian powered pallet truck (walking with it not driving) from one side of the warehouse to the other and putting said products in cages/dollies, I cover an average of 7 miles a day so I'm on my feet constantly, so much pressure from employer as we are severely understaffed, they have brought staff in but the work is just constant, warehouse is packed and crowded with staff but there's just too much work so don't like people taking time off work we are constantly under pressure to do overtime or work on our rest days
