WIBU discharging myself from hospital

Sorry if this is long but it's important I tell you every detail to give the full story. Saturday evening I woke from a nap to find myself really sore and swollen in my groin and part of my pubis, overnight it swelled considerably went really red and painful to walk, sit, stand etc, I called OOH gp Sunday morning who got me an urgent appointment at our urgent treatment centre within A&E. App was at 9.30am with an absolutely lovely doctor who left no stone unturned and said I had developed an abscess and it needed draining urgently due to the risk of sepsis and the fact it had literally appeared out of nowhere and had grown 4x4 inches literally overnight. He got me an appointment with emergency surgical ambulatory care for 2.15pm yesterday, I attended the nurse took one look and said "no surgeon on this ward will touch that as it is on your pubis not your groin" she sent me back to urgent care and the doctor I saw that morning took me back to his room had another look then said its definitely a groin abscess but we'll let gynae have a look anyway, he sent me up to the gynae ward, 3 different doctors took a look but it was the most senior surgeon on the ward who said it actually is groin, not his area of expertise and also due to the amount of blood vessels in the area he couldn't touch it, so I waited and he came back and said I had to go back to emergency surgical ambulatory care as its them who deal with these things. So off I went an as soon as I walked in I was met by the same nurse who told me she had spoken to a surgeon up on surgical assessment ward and that they were waiting for me and expecting me and I may be treated as a golden patient I. E doctor has a look at it then books me a time to go back the next day and have it removed so off I went up to the ward.

Now this is where I started losing my rag mentally, met by a nurse on the ward who asks another lady to show me to my bed and she said "ill be with you in a minute" yeah you guessed it, never saw her again. I was shown my bed obs done and that's it never saw anybody again, nobody knew when the doctor was coming to speak to me, nobody could tell me whether or not I could eat or drink by this point I hadn't eaten in 26 hours, Its on my notes that I'm on antibiotics yet nobody asked if I was due any (I was but mine were at home as nobody told me when all this started that I would become an inpatient), I waited hours, I had absolutely no overnight stuff with me, I got frustrated and I went to the nurses station to let them know I'm discharging myself and have someone call me to arrange to go back in when it's convenient. The nurse couldn't even find the doctors number to call and ask permission to sign off the discharge, and with that I left.

So to clarify I'd been in and out of hospital for 12 hours, I was no further forward than knowing I had an abscess, i had 4 doctors, 2 nurses and a receptionist all having a gander at my genitals, I was passed from place to place, I walked in agony the entire length of our hospital 1/2 mile 3 times, nobody could tell me what the hell was happening and all the prodding and poking aggravated the abscess to the point it doubled in size and started spreading down my leg. WIBU, maybe I was but I was frustrated, tired and I hadn't eaten in 28 hours. I'm planning on attending A&E this morning and hopefully try and get somewhere, I'm due back in work tomorrow and need it removing as my job requires me to be on my feet for 8 hours a day and don't want to be walking around in pain.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine though she left it go over a week so it got very inflamed. It took two surgeries and a lot of antibiotics to clear up. It was more infected than she realised. You are better to stick with the waiting and get it sorted when you go back. Your health is your wealth unfortunately and it needs to be looked after irrespective of the inconvenience of it. The care does sound all over the place so I don’t blame you being annoyed!

Monstertrucks · 30/08/2021 20:45

All the best with your op OP - so pleased to hear you are getting it sortedFlowers

CarrotTops · 30/08/2021 20:49

It wasn't Dr's toing and froing though, it was one nurse who thought it should have been gynae, everyone else you saw agreed it should be the surgical team. Sounds like gynae tried to help but confident it was safe for them to do the procedure.

I'm glad you are getting sorted, but I think there has been a lot of misinformation on this thread tbh. An assertion that Dr's are just chilling and ignoring patients, seniors aren't available on a weekend etc which just isn't true.

glasgowLil · 30/08/2021 21:16

You need to go back. Hospitals can be intensely irritating places because everything goes so slowly and once you are in there they assume that you’ve got no where else to be but modern medicine is still something to be very grateful for! I think you need to accept that you need to be overnight, you probably can’t work this week and you need to call in some childcare favours

RacistAngst · 30/08/2021 21:31

Please to see you will get the right treatment today :)

I suspect that having someone explaining WHY there was so much discussion on who would do the surgery helped. A reminder for all. HCP to involve their patients and explain what’s going on. The system is often too patriarcal.

Backtobacktheyfacedeachother · 30/08/2021 21:48

Hope all goes well op, wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers

FlyingPandas · 30/08/2021 21:54

Good luck OP, glad you are getting it sorted. Hope all goes well.

Carrottopppp · 30/08/2021 21:57

Surgery has been delayed until first thing in the morning as bloods weren't taken and as they take 2 hours to come back midnight would be an unreasonable tums to do surgery, apparently I have cellulitis around the abscess, no idea what that is but anesthesiologist said it would clear up once surgery is over but I need antibiotics to cover me for a few days after. If it was tonight then doctor said I would be home first thing in the morning so if it still goes ahead first thing in the morning then all bring well hopefully I'll be home late afternoon

To be honest when my 1 year old have surgery it was unexpectedly delayed due to an emergency which meant my then 18 month old when another 4 hours without food or water in a small cubicle without toys etc due to covid.

I didn't allow him to leave even though it was pretty awful. He needed surgery and that was that.

I think you're being a bit childish and can't see what you've achieved.

You had every right to complain, and to ask for medication, and for water atleast and for consideration of food etc. To rant etc then fair enough but now you're just back to square one.

You can't work if you're this ill - you're children were safe with their father. I fully appreciate they're worried and missing you and I would also hate that but they were safe and well.

I'm not sure you had any real reason to leave. If I couldn't have coped without food and water any longer I'd have just eaten...

Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 30/08/2021 22:04

Good to hear it’s going to be sorted. Sounds extremely uncomfortable.

Hope you can get some sleep tonight. Don't put too much pressure on yourself while the cellulitis clears up - it's the kind of thing that can come back. Thanks for the update and hope all goes well tomorrow.
Mummapenguin20 · 30/08/2021 22:10

Hope you feel better soon

Beckhamsmetatarsal · 30/08/2021 22:12

Sounds a bit silly to leave the hospital with cellulitis and an abcess yeah- two types of infection??

Let's hope you're ok when you return at your convenience.

flipflopslap · 30/08/2021 22:15

Oh OP I emphathise. I had an abscess in probably the same place. I was seen by ortho and general surgery- they had such an argument over who I should be operated under. They didn't mention any concern about arteries (my abscess was probably more superficial than yours). It was more political than that!

Anyway they suddenly admitted me and gave me IV antibiotics overnight and operated the next day.

I had it packed and dressed daily. the GP practise could only offer every 3 days but said it needed it daily. So a friend who is a nurse did it for me.
It healed very well and hasn't returned!!

Good luck with the surgery tomorrow.

MissSmith80 · 30/08/2021 22:19

Wishing you the best for the morning OP Thanks

Carrottopppp · 30/08/2021 22:33

@Beckhamsmetatarsal yes because I knew it was actually possible to have 2 infections in one area, when you read about infections like mine it clearly says the area will appear red like mine does, it does not say that the so called redness is actually cellulitis, why make out like I asked for this, yeah I must have because I just love being in hospital away from my family, potentially losing a week's pay at work, who cares that maybe now my children go without as I've got next to no money next week but hey who gives a shit let's all be a big drama queen because apparently that's what I am 🙄 nope see me I put my family before myself, I'd rather hobble around work in agony just so they don't go without, just so I can keep my job, and just so I'm not a burden on anybody else, it's my partners birthday today and yep he's spent it all alone as I'm here getting myself sorted and that makes me feel so sad for him.

If you’re worried about your children going without why would you delay getting sorted thereby making the situation worse and risking your children going without for longer? And I’m sure your partner can cope with having his birthday without you.

@Beckhamsmetatarsal how long have you had that username? 😊 I think I remember the Sun newspaper exhorting us all to pray for him! Slight derail, sorry!
Fangdango · 30/08/2021 22:51

At least your partner knows you are safe and being looked after @Carrottopppp . I'm sure that's a better birthday for him than worrying about you, and it's just not your fault. Hope you can get statutory sick pay at least from your employer - there are some good HR advisors on this board. Please take good care of yourself - sounds like you have a family who love you and need you well.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 30/08/2021 23:17

I put my family before myself, I'd rather hobble around work in agony just so they don't go without, just so I can keep my job, and just so I'm not a burden on anybody else

But doing that won't benefit them in the longer term if it means the issue becomes recurring or never gets the chance to get better in the first place!

FlyingPandas · 30/08/2021 23:29

Sorry to hear about the delay, OP. You can ask for morphine if the pain is excruciating - for both of my abscesses, I had to wait overnight before there was a theatre slot for me (life threatening emergency cases took priority on both occasions) but I was in so much pain I was barely coping, and the 4-hourly morphine doses really helped.

Don't suffer in silence overnight if you're in agony - please ask for some pain relief, it will take the edge off.

Summerfun54321 · 30/08/2021 23:37

What an ordeal Flowers good luck for the op and your recovery.

UndertheCedartree · 30/08/2021 23:39

I'm so glad to hear you are back in hospital and with a plan for surgery. I sincerely hope it goes well and you are able to be home soon. Anxiety around a hospital stay sounds very challenging.

I was sorry to read you felt ignored for the hour you were on the ward previously. Unfortunately it sounds like you arrived in the last hour of day shift meaning your nurse had half an hour to finish her jobs before handover. With the best will in the world even if she was on track to have time to have a word with you, just one patient asking for PRN would have meant she wasn't able to fit you in.

Good Luck, take good care of yourself and feel better Flowers

cultkid · 31/08/2021 05:52

Good luck for today

I understand why you went home

I know the feeling of guilt I do it all the time
