AIBU to not want child to travel in boot

Mugglebuggle · 28/08/2021 20:01

Arranging to go for lunch/ dinner tomorrow, DH wants youngest DC to travel in the boot so we only need one car. Other option would be he, or another guest, drives a second car but would mean they cannot drink. We are going to country pub on B roads, approximately 15 - 20 minute drive. AIBU to be annoyed?

For further info, we both worked all through pandemic, booked 2 weeks annual leave and I caught covid at start, it's been pretty miserable & this would be first 'nice' social outing since and before we return to work next week bit I still don't think it's worth compromising safety.

Apart from being illegal... I’m another vote in favour of DH going in the boot if he thinks it’s so effing safe

TartanJumper · 28/08/2021 22:09

I realise it has little to do with overall AIBU but giving some of his rationale

His rational is bollox.
I've worked all through covid, and had it too. It doesn't mean I can make fucking stupid suggestions.
Maybe I've missed it, but you haven't told us your immediate response.

Get a cab so you can all enjoy it!
£20 on a cab , is preferable to sticking a child in the boot of a car, so a parent can drink!

Aquamarine1029 · 28/08/2021 22:10

I would divorce a man who genuinely thinks this is acceptable. Your husband is an idiot.

My immediate response was pretty much summed up in your first line.

Do a family cycle there and back then you won't need to stress about car boot dilemma? You must have some joker of a DH!🤣

TriciaMcMillan · 28/08/2021 22:13

Condescending? Ok then. Actually, in the event this is true, really just very much confused by the connection between the info you provide and the suggestion anyone would take such an insanely dangerous risk with a child. But if you think that explains his rationale, have at it...

It's also illegal to be drunk in charge of a bicycle Grin, so he still couldn't drink!
AdoraBell · 28/08/2021 22:15

Haven’t RTFT, but I would suggest your DH asks the police about this. Go to the nearest police station and explain his reasoning for this and see what they tell him.

HarrisMcCoo · 28/08/2021 22:16

TartanJumper I stand corrected. Never knew that 👍🤦🏻

MrsFin · 28/08/2021 22:16

My parents used to put the back seat of our estate car down and make a bed up in the boot when we used to drive from Swansea to Manchester a few times a year.
But that was in the 1960s.
I can't imagine doing that now!

OnTheBoardwalk · 28/08/2021 22:21

Boot is the crumple zone of the car isn’t it? No way should a child be in there

I remember being in the back of a van in the 70's being thrown around at every sharp turn. In the 70/80's thankfully this stopped

magicjo · 28/08/2021 23:17

Do you actually mean a closed boot?

Surely you wouldn't even be asking the question?

Paint69 · 28/08/2021 23:37

Who voted YABU?!

TheChip · 28/08/2021 23:40

Me, by accident🙈

Of course not a closed boot, that would be so dangerous! Sorry, I'm being facetious, it's an estate car & DH is being a dick even suggesting it! I'm just so glad I queried arrangements, I really do think he would allow it😳

This is not the 70s.

WaterIsBest · 29/08/2021 00:05

Can your husband go in the boot instead?
Thats a much better suggestion !

DrFoxtrot · 29/08/2021 00:06

One of my XH's relatives was killed in the 1970's in the boot of an overcrowded car when the car was hit from behind Sad. It's so unsafe.

toomuchlaundry · 29/08/2021 01:33

People joke about being in the boot of cars in 70/80s, but they are the lucky ones who lived to tell the tale. Some didn’t.

I don’t think I ever was in the boot, but I did lie down on the back seat asleep after my parents had been to friends for the evening (and alcohol would have been consumed by my dad who was driving) so even worse.

RightYesButNo · 29/08/2021 03:41

@TheChip Just click “YANBU” and it will change your vote.

Furries · 29/08/2021 03:48

Tell him it’s a great idea, sensible to take just one car. Just one small adjustment - your child sits up front and DH can go in the boot - I’m sure he won’t mind!

a8mint · 29/08/2021 03:49

Do you mean those backward facing sears in the boot of an estate car

AIBU to not want child to travel in boot
Balonzette · 29/08/2021 03:52

That is AWFUL. I can't believe what I've just read.

OP, I think your post is very wishy washy. I think if people on this thread had told you it’s fine, you’d have gone along with DH’s stupidity.
