AIBU to not want child to travel in boot

Mugglebuggle · 28/08/2021 20:01

Arranging to go for lunch/ dinner tomorrow, DH wants youngest DC to travel in the boot so we only need one car. Other option would be he, or another guest, drives a second car but would mean they cannot drink. We are going to country pub on B roads, approximately 15 - 20 minute drive. AIBU to be annoyed?

For further info, we both worked all through pandemic, booked 2 weeks annual leave and I caught covid at start, it's been pretty miserable & this would be first 'nice' social outing since and before we return to work next week bit I still don't think it's worth compromising safety.

My parents used to make me travel in the back of a van, but that was the 80s, no idea if it was normal then, but we used to go on holiday and me and my sister would be in the back of the van on cushions.
I would not allow my child to travel like this!

Glittertwins · 28/08/2021 20:11

Er no. Apart from the fact it is illegal, presuming you haven't got a 7 seater people carrier type car, I'm sure B roads are statistically more dangerous than motorways too. Get a taxi

Hemingwaycat · 28/08/2021 20:11

The 90s called, they want their thread back… Jesus Christ.

I used to love going in the back of my friends dads van!! Totally not safe though! And also in the 80’s!!
Livvielo · 28/08/2021 20:12

Put your DH in the boot instead.

LittleOwl153 · 28/08/2021 20:12

I'm not sure annoyed would quite cut it tbh. (Assuming we are taking an actual boot). Every person from baby to adult gets a proper seat or someone doesn't go!

ApolloandDaphne · 28/08/2021 20:12

If you mean the actual boot then YABVVU to do this.

If you mean in the uncomfortable seats in the back of a big car then YANBU.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 28/08/2021 20:12

My siblings and I travelled to Scotland from Manchester in the back of a van, no seats, never mind seatbelts! Bloody ridiculous 😬

NoSquirrels · 28/08/2021 20:13

It’s illegal.

So is drink-driving.

Don’t do either.

LittleOwl153 · 28/08/2021 20:13

Oh and I'm guessing you'd be driving this illegal vehicle whilst he was getting pissed... and you know what kind of trouble that would get you - not him - in.

aaaaah · 28/08/2021 20:13

And what if there's a crash?

This is a really stupid idea. And just so someone can have a drink? They've got issues.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 28/08/2021 20:15

He could take 2 trips or go somewhere closer, all for the sake of a drink is it that worth it, have the drink after the meal once home

CityCommuter · 28/08/2021 20:15

@Mugglebuggle is this a wind-up? Do you mean travel in the boot of a saloon car in total darkness like a hostage or in the boot of a hatchback? Either way it's madness in 2021!

Jeschara · 28/08/2021 20:17

No, No and No, what if the car gets shunted from behind. This could cause serious injury or death. It's also highly illegal.
Sorry to say this and to swear but your husband is a Fuckwit.

NerrSnerr · 28/08/2021 20:19

Bloody hell. I was always the child who ended up in the boot as I was small and the youngest but this was in the 80s/ early 90s. It is absolutely not acceptable now and would be really dangerous.

I assume your husband is expecting you to do the driving so he can have a drink?

Could you all go in taxis?

Crowsaregreat · 28/08/2021 20:19

Meh, we used to do this all the time when I was a kid and we'd fight over who got to go in the boot with the dog. But for the sake of one adult drinking a bit, it's idiotic. The one adult could just walk if it's country roads and they're that fussed? 15 min drive couldn't be more than an hour's walk?

cabbageking · 28/08/2021 20:19

Think she actually means the boot and not a seat in the rear, to save taking two cars and drink

This is never acceptable or safe or is a windup?

Mugglebuggle · 28/08/2021 20:20

I was putting it mildly when said annoyed & have no intention of allowing it, I just wanted the weight of MN to demonstrate what a twat my not so DH is being.

Of course they can’t sit in the boot! Ridiculous! I’m assuming from your update, even thought it’s not explicit, you mean the actual boot and not a seven seater.

No one should sit in the boot!

If anyone at all had to in an emergency it should be him sitting in the boot - or another adult. The last person who should be in the boot is the youngest child - but I reiterate that no one should be.

Also no drink driving of course.

Wakeywakey86 · 28/08/2021 20:24

Got to be a piss take this!?
Really!?
So you would prioritise someone being car free and having a few bevvies over the safety of your son, and abiding by the law?
This isn't a genuine question, surely!!

aaaaah · 28/08/2021 20:30

It's an actual boot yes?

ancientgran · 28/08/2021 20:31

Put him in the boot. Seems reasonable to me Grin

ElizaDoolots · 28/08/2021 20:33

Is this a serious question? Confused

BrilliantBetty · 28/08/2021 20:33

Can some people just go by taxi?

I don't think kids have been traveling in the boot / behind seats for at least 25 years.

Iloveacurry · 28/08/2021 20:34

He should get a taxi if he's so desperate for a drink! If he can afford to go for a nice meal, then he can afford the taxi surely?

I expect he was wanting YOU to drive op anyway?
