AIBU to not want child to travel in boot

Mugglebuggle · 28/08/2021 20:01

Arranging to go for lunch/ dinner tomorrow, DH wants youngest DC to travel in the boot so we only need one car. Other option would be he, or another guest, drives a second car but would mean they cannot drink. We are going to country pub on B roads, approximately 15 - 20 minute drive. AIBU to be annoyed?

For further info, we both worked all through pandemic, booked 2 weeks annual leave and I caught covid at start, it's been pretty miserable & this would be first 'nice' social outing since and before we return to work next week bit I still don't think it's worth compromising safety.

If you got Covid last week how are you out socialising a week later?

TheChip · 28/08/2021 20:57

As a kid I used to love laying in the boot on long drives. One of the back seats would be down and I'd crawl in and out as I pleased. This was before seat belts.
But as for now, I wouldnt let my kids. It wouldn't even enter my mind as an option tbh

TheChip · 28/08/2021 20:58

I accidentally clicked yabu. Yanbu!

TheWoleb · 28/08/2021 20:59

If he is serious then he isnt fit to be a parent. End of.

Just take a fucking taxi.

cookingisoverrated · 28/08/2021 20:59

WTF!?

Hire an uber if he really doesn't want to drive. But don't do this. Imagine getting pulled over...

"Return to work next week" could be Monday or Tuesday. 2 weeks annual leave from 16th to 27th. Testing positive on the 16th makes it more than 10 days now.
spotcheck · 28/08/2021 20:59

But hang on, do you mean actual boot or a fold out seat in the back?

Mumoftwoinprimary · 28/08/2021 21:00

It depends - are you time travelling back to 1987 first?

No - completely unacceptable - both from a legality point of view and from the fact that it is really quite dangerous.

Shade17 · 28/08/2021 21:00

I rode in the boot of a saloon in the 90s just for a laugh. Would I let anyone do the now? Not a chance!

tttigress · 28/08/2021 21:01

If you literally mean in the boot, as opposed to a 4x4 with fold seats, then it is illegal!

Bostonbullsmumma · 28/08/2021 21:02

There was a really horrendous crash when I was a teenager with young boys doing this so they could all fit in one parents car after a trip out. I drive past their memorial on the side of the road often- it's heartbreaking. Nothing is worth that risk.

DrManhattan · 28/08/2021 21:03

Yeah, I wouldn't be waiting in for that parent of the year award.

Hankunamatata · 28/08/2021 21:04

I thought you meant in a seat that folds up from the boot. Not the actual boot Shock

Hankunamatata · 28/08/2021 21:05

Get a taxi there and back.if that bothered about drinking

MumUndone · 28/08/2021 21:08

Used to love traveling in the boot as a kid.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 28/08/2021 21:08

Would your 'D'H go in the boot? I'm guessing he would say no so why does he think it's okay for his child to do it?

I can't believe anyone would think this is okay and if I were you'd I'd be worried about what else he thinks would be fine.

This is all so he can drink

Crowsaregreat · 28/08/2021 21:12

Does anyone know if it was actually illegal to do this in the 80s, or was it a turn a blind eye thing?

Raggedyanabell · 28/08/2021 21:15

Why is he suggesting the youngest child goes in the boot though? Why not volunteer himself? Jesus.

..to be clear, I'm not saying anyone should be going in the boot but I honestly can't wrap my head around the idea that a father would risk the safety of his child for a drink!

Poor child, thank god he/she has a caring mother.

Mischance · 28/08/2021 21:17

Erm .....I think he will find that this is illegal - apart from being total madness.

Coffeemakesmehappy · 28/08/2021 21:18

Assuming you mean in the actual boot (no seatbelts and designated for luggage) your DH is being an utter knob by even suggesting this. Four solutions:

  1. One car, two trips
  2. Two cars, both ways
  3. Two cars, one left at venue (if allowed), your DH can run the other driver back to pick up their car the following day once sobered up
  4. One suitably sized taxi for everyone, both ways

Again, your DH is being an utter knob. I have a very expensive crash safe crate for my dogs for the boot so that I can take passengers in the rear seats too, but I hate using it there, even so - if I fold the seats down, I can also secure it (properly) in the section that would be occupied by the rear seats, meaning that there’s a crumple zone at the far rear.

I live rurally, mostly unclassified but some B roads - tractors are busy harvesting right now, towing heavy trailers. Suggest your DH has a little BIG think about the consequences of a rear ender with something like that?

ThirdElephant · 28/08/2021 21:20

So, an actual car boot?! Just so more people can drink alcohol with lunch?

That's insane. To adapt the words of Ron Weasley, 'He needs to sort out his priorities!'

Raggedyanabell · 28/08/2021 21:22

This sent a shudder down my spine. It doesn't bare thinking about!!

lannistunut · 28/08/2021 21:24

Flashbacks!

But not OK in 2021, not at all, ever.

FTEngineerM · 28/08/2021 21:26

Love how you’re selling the idea because you’ve had a rough year 😂

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2021 21:27

Do you think your DH has ever done this before?
