To wonder how often you leave the house?

Would you say once / twice a week is normal?

OP posts:
speakout · 25/08/2021 21:13

Which is why wfh is so unhealthy.

Working in a office can be equally unhealthy.
I WFH and exercise every day.
My Oh works out of the home and never exercises.

Not sure why WFH is unhealthy.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 25/08/2021 21:13

I go to work once a day, walk the dog twice a fat, and also go out two or three times a week at night. Also leave the house to go to the shops, run errands.

My parents who are in their 80s leave the house a least once a fat, usually more often than that.

Once or twice a week sounds very definitely NOT normal.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/08/2021 21:16

When I wfm I try to go out and buy something non-essential every day. If it's raining I don't though and it's much harder to be active than when working outside the home.
I've always resisted going out again after work though. If I have anything after work I have to stay in the town centre - I won't come all the way home and then go back again.
I'm a bit baffled by the person who said they go out six times a day.

There are some days I can go out 6 times. 2 x school run, 2 x dog walks, pop to the shop, out to the gym etc. Not every day though!

WFM is unhealthy because it makes you so inactive. Compare your steps to when you go out to work. Few people work in offices as small as their homes where they can make a cup of tea in the same room that they work in and the toilet is next door. In an office, they have to walk to do these things.

Also, many people walk, cycle or take public transport to work and those who take public transport walk to the bus or train stop. You can even have a walk from your parking space whereas working from home has no exercise as part of it.

Yes, you can decide to exercise every day, but that's a separate thing and not part of your daily routine linked to your work.
Also, the mental health aspect, which is for another thread.

Wouldn't you combine some of those things though? I don't think I could cope with 6 different trips.
shinynewapple21 · 25/08/2021 21:27

I WFH, mainly have shopping deliveries and don't have children to take to school, but even so, I would go for a walk each day, unless perhaps the weather is really bad and DS is looking after the dog . Then I would normally pop into the coop for top up each week, visit my mum and do something social like visit a restaurant or meet a friend . So not as much as some people, but more than others !

emilylily · 25/08/2021 21:30

I just go out for dog walks once a day at the moment and sometimes do something like walk around a national trust place about once a fortnight/every three weeks.

speakout · 25/08/2021 21:33

Gwenhwyfar

But people who WFH work the same number of hours as those in an office surely?
And working outside the home will involve a commute.
Even a modest 30 minute commute a day ( and most people won't be walking to work) will involve 5 extra hours a week that someone WFT could use to exercise.
Plus many WFH jobs have more flexible hours, allowing time to take a gym class, go for a run etc.

VictoriaBun · 25/08/2021 21:34

Everyone has their own normal.

How can I combine a drop off and pick up school run? Dog needs two walks (one at either side of day) and I can't take said dog to the shop or gym 🤷‍♀️

TheKeatingFive · 25/08/2021 21:47

unless you've signed the opt out to the working time directive

This is very widespread, so I suspect she has.

TheKeatingFive · 25/08/2021 21:48

Oh and in answer to the question, everyday for a significant period. I’d go spare if I didn’t.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/08/2021 21:54

"

In theory yes, but I think some wfh people work longer hours when they're at home because there isn't a clear limit between work and home.

"Even a modest 30 minute commute a day ( and most people won't be walking to work) will involve 5 extra hours a week that someone WFT could use to exercise."

yes, but as I said, even if people don't walk to work they may use public transport which includes a walk and that is as a normal part of their day whereas using the 5 extra hours to exercise is not something that's built into your day.

"many WFH jobs have more flexible hours, allowing time to take a gym class, go for a run etc."

I was thinking about people wfh because of Covid, not specifically wfh jobs.

NotMyCat · 25/08/2021 21:56

My work is time limited - we are only open for a set number of hours so I can't work more than that! I'm doing OT as short staffed but usually would just do 40hrs which is what I'm contracted for. OT is paid

leavesthataregreen · 25/08/2021 21:59

I work from home but go nuts if I stay in all day. Daily walk almost every day. Out 4 times a week for fitness classes. Out a couple of times a week to see friends and soon I'll be out a lot morning seeing clients f2f for the first time in a year and a half.

Sparklehead · 25/08/2021 22:04

Multiple times a day. For work, to do the school run, to go shopping, run errands, meet up with friends, go for a walk, take kids to clubs/activities. Today I haven’t been at work, and the children are on holiday, I’ve still had to leave the house 4 or 5 times.

user1487194234 · 25/08/2021 22:04

Every day

BoredZelda · 25/08/2021 22:17

I leave the house whenever I need to go somewhere. Sometimes that can be every day, sometimes it can be a week without going out. I usually do a quick walk round the block if I’ve nowhere in particular to go, but that depends on how busy I am.

BeauxRingarde · 26/08/2021 09:45

Which is why wfh is so unhealthy

I get far more exercise working from home than I did working in the office!

I'm a bit baffled by the person who said they go out six times a day

Can't see what's baffling about that. Yesterday, for example, I went out to the shop as we ran out of milk, then a bit later took one child to the train station, came home to work, went out to meet a friend for a walk, came home to work, went out to collect another child, came home to work, went out to pick up car from service garage, later went out for a swim, later went to drop something off to a friends house, later went to meet dh for a drink, .....thats what, 8 times in and out? Average enough day, could easily have been more.

Plus many WFH jobs have more flexible hours, allowing time to take a gym class, go for a run etc.

But with, for example, an active commute the exercise is built into your life, it’s not something you’re having to artificially introduce into it.

If you’re inherently lazy like me it’s much harder to force myself to do an exercise DVD or go for a jog or bike ride for the sake of it than it was to cycle to work which I was doing because I needed to get to work. If I didn’t cycle I’d walk or take public transport with a short walk at either end. It all adds up. And I worked in a sixth floor office, just heading up and down those stairs multiple times a day contributed. Building exercise into people’s everyday lives has been shown to be much more effective and sustainable.

Most people in my team have found they’re much more sedentary wfh than they were in the office. Luckily we’re going back soon Smile

Fine if walking is the only exercise you get.
WFH gives me time to engage in much more physical pursuits than walking.

GreenTortoise · 26/08/2021 10:18

Everyday. I'd loose my head if I didn't.

WildeWitch · 26/08/2021 10:19

At least 2/3 times a day.

DGFB · 26/08/2021 10:22

Six out of seven days. My home is lovely but I go stir crazy without leaving. I go out even just for a 30 minute walk. I feel so good afterwards
