Would you say once / twice a week is normal?

@girl71

Did OP come back to say why they actually asked this question?

No she's been gone three days so her 'once or twice a week' must be lengthy trips.

Only if I'm ill would I not leave the house at least once a day.

"In an office I was sat in one spot all day, the kitchen and toilet both a few steps away. My home is on multiple levels so I’m up and downstairs every time I want the loo or a cuppa. I also fit in housework and time in the garden weeding etc. My desk is at the top of the house so answering the door is down and back up 4 flights of stairs! (The ground floor of my house is someone else’s flat)"

My ground floor is someone else's too, but I have an intercom and anyway don't have many visits, nothing like what you might get in an office outside of lockdown.
I think your home being bigger than your office, at least in terms of the space you use yourself is quite rare.

When I have to, school/nursery runs etc but if its the weekend and pissing down with rain, or even far too hot then no, happily spend the weekend mooching about the house.
Making a point of staying in because I don't want to go outside, then no that's not us.

I have a major health condition so sometimes I can go a week without leaving once or more, then other times I can go everyday

Term time, I'm out 2-3 times a day. Rest of the time out once a day. That doesn't mean I'm out of the house for a long time, sometimes I just pop out.

@UserStillatLarge

This is a good point. There is a beautiful big house near me, complete with a pool, hot tub, home gym etc (I stalked it on zoopla when it was for sale a couple of years ago). I could happily not leave that house for a week or so. I mean if I was rich to afford to live there and not have to work, then today I would have had my morning swim at home rather than the local council swimming pool. Later on I'd invite my friends round to the garden with a bar, BBQ/pizza oven and hot tub, rather than going to the pub. Much more appealing than a week in my second floor flat!!

I get nothing from most of my trips out of the house. For things like picking up my child from school, I never even get out of my car.

At home I have a million hobbies. I literally have a notebook filled with more craft and art project ideas than I can hope to get to in my lifetime. I play word and logic puzzles. For a couple of years I was trying to learn Spanish but Covid really killed my drive on that one. Video games, board games. Life at home is never boring. The only problem is that there isn’t enough recreation time after work and chores.

I do know people who when they are home only watch tv. As Teal says, no wonder these people get bored at home. I don’t watch much tv, an hour or so in the evening at most and not every night, never during the day because it gives me a headache.

I do wfh although not full time hours. The rest of the time I do a few chores, normally have some sort of DIY project on the go, gardening and/or relaxing in the garden. I read, I have multiple craft hobbies, I’m learning a language, play games, spend time playing with the cats! Both adult DC are here at the moment so I spend time with them. The days fly by.

Some of these posts have shocked me..what do you do at home all the time?? Watch TV? Don't you get bored?

If you think watching TV is all there is to do at home by way of enjoying being there I’m not surprised you have to get out so often.

Me too! I get out and about a fair bit - at least once a day but frequently more. But at home: keeping on top of house jobs (little and often here) reading, writing, studying new things - I love a free online course. Lucky to have a garden but it needs to be maintained.
I keep in touch with family and friends via phone, email, messaging and occasionally by handwritten letter. And sometimes I have a friend round for coffee though more often than not i meet friends out. I have a couple of exercise dvds, I like cooking, I'll plan for special occasions. Keeping up with current affairs. So much to do that I'm never ever bored.

I'm leave the house roughly once or twice a week.

Working from home (although going back to the office in mid-Sept), groceries delivered or click&collect (DP goes while I'm working), no kids to ferry about or dogs to walk. I do go out at weekends though.

Days I don’t go out I am often wfh pretty solidly until 6 or 7pm with no social plans for the evening. Or i have a major domestic paperwork or sorting/cleaning/diy project on etc. Actually I’m not sure I’ve ever done anything significant diy related without annoying last min dash out for some forgotten necessity.

If I don't go out I read, garden, have people round, spend time with the other people I live with, tidy up a bit, cook. I go out a fair amount, but only if theres a reason, such as going to a place of interest, meeting friends, or for work. I certainly wouldn't be fussed about for example, popping to the shops just to get out of the house, as to me thats duller than staying in. I do have a walk most days for excercise, but don't count this as going out, even though it involves leaving the house.

I definitely move around more during the day wfh. In an office I was sat in one spot all day, the kitchen and toilet both a few steps away. My home is on multiple levels so I’m up and downstairs every time I want the loo or a cuppa. I also fit in housework and time in the garden weeding etc. My desk is at the top of the house so answering the door is down and back up 4 flights of stairs! (The ground floor of my house is someone else’s flat). I never moved this much in the office. The commute was mostly sitting also.

I don’t feel the need to get out much. I have my garden for fresh air. And I’m quite active throughout the day. My DC are grown up. I did all the years of school runs, in and out all the time etc. I like not having to do those things now.

Surely there is variations on what leaving the house means though?

Driving to school, dropping your DC off and driving home is "leaving the house" but hardly particularly beneficial (for you) in terms of the "leaving the house" benefits that are being extolled here.

Is going to the gym if you drive there and don't talk to anyone while you are there (true for many people) intrinsically better than doing a Youtube exercise sessions in your living room?

Is it "better" to go to a friend's house as opposed to having a friend come to you?

I'm just musing ...

Every day, I live in a flat and need to at least get out for a quick walk everyday. I joke that I'm like a dog: I need a daily walk.

I had to self isolate for 7 days (I think?) when I had covid symptoms last year, back when you couldn't book a test. Found it a lot harder than I thought I would, but maybe that's because I had to stay in, plus all the weird stress of April 2020!

It's very rare that I have a day where I don't leave the house. If I do it's because I'm ill or really tired.

I'm still wfh but I go out running most days or for a walk or bike ride.

I love the idea of only going out a few times per week but in reality I was housebound for a while after having a c section and on day 5 I was pleading with my mum to take me out before I lost the plot. I'm in and out like a yo-yo.

Report
blackheartsgirl · 27/08/2021 04:18

Depends on circumstances surely?

I cant bear being in the house these days so I'm in and out all the time

Today I went out five times. Popped to friends, went to the shop, took dd3 to football, went to my sis in laws...

Very rare I don't leave the house.

But that's me.
A friend of mine hasn't left her house in days, she has a different set of circumstances to me

I'm in lockdown, and I still leave the house once a day!

When not in lockdown I leave the house several times a day.
