Let me explain. I need a new measuring jug. The measures have been washed off my glass ones and my plastic one is not easy to read. They're cheap yet I have been struggling for about 2 years and never really sure I've measured correctly meaning some failed bread and the odd annoyance most days. Why haven't o bought one? I fear it's symptomatic of other flaws
Tell me yours and make me feel less of a weirdo

@TheChosenTwo

Oh my god loads of things Grin To be fair, I replace things when they lose their purpose so in the case of measuring jugs with the markings disappearing I’d buy new ones for accuracy but I’d struggle to throw the old ones away if they still worked as a jug to hold liquid! Because I always need jugs, I use them to fill pet water bowls, water plants, make stock etc, things I don’t need to specifically measure out. I can think of a few things though that I need to buy and just don’t - clips for closing food bags so things like rice don’t fall out kitchen scissors - ours have been moved somewhere else and I can’t find them so I always run into the front room to use the ‘fire scissors’ if I need any a cake knife - every time I go to cut a bloody cake i think to myself that I need to buy one!
I'm the same as this. I feel so guilty for buying new things if the old things still work or are useful

I reuse the same wooden planters each year, this year I used Freecycle timber to replace the bases of half of them rather than buy or make new

I have a fan who's base legs broke, I screwed 2 planks of wood to the base and varnished them, so I could still use it - a new one would only have been £20

I just hate waste and use everything until it's fallen apart and not fixable then I use the bits for other things

Good job I have an our building to be honest otherwise my house would look like a hoarders paradise with all the bits and bobs from old things

mamabear715 · 25/08/2021 10:47

There is NOTHING on any of these posts that I need.. I order stuff quickly when the originals fail.
I feel very anal now.. :-0

CherryRipe1 · 25/08/2021 10:49

This topic is funny. Perhaps we should have a Mumsnet swishing event for all our useless tatty gadgets and gizmos in the hope of getting something we require. One woman's trash & all that....

youlookingatme · 25/08/2021 12:11

It must be a thing with measuring jugs as I have needed a new one for about 2 years. Why am I so tight? I buy all sorts of rubbish in Home Bargains but can't bring myself to buy a new one.

viques · 25/08/2021 12:49

@Cynderella

I like Ikea's roasting tins, knives, bag clips, set of plastic fork, whisk, slice etc for cooking, tealights, napkins (we don't use kitchen roll and Ikea cotton napkins are cheap and wash well), white cotton sheets ... glasses, plates, bowls ... plants, vases ... I love Ikea!
Don’t forget their bundles of scissors. I bought enough to make sure that every room has a pair of scissors in it. I have saved myself miles of wandering about my own house looking for scissors.

And their bag clips, wonderful, though the really small ones are a pain.

ballerina1971 · 25/08/2021 13:06

Oh my, I have found my 'crew!!' I am not alone Smile
Yes to:

Tea towels
Underwear (nothing looks as comfy as my old favourites!!)
Mascara
Measuring jug (really can't see those measurements!)
And towels, this one I have slightly managed to overcome by donating my old ones to the dog and cats rescues by me as they always need them, makes me feel like they are not going to waste.
Tea spoons, I have old ones from TWA and no amount of bleaching/steradent is getting the tea stains out of these. But I just can't let them go

Sitting here reading my list, makes me realise how daft I'm being. I should just go out and buy the bloody things, hardly going to cost a crazy amount 🤣🤣

mamabear715 · 25/08/2021 13:22

From the anal one... cheapest measuring jugs I've found are 35p at Tesco.. ;-)

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 15:25

Thank you thread! I have just replaced a frying pan and wok, after about 6 months of cursing.

DH has gone to buy a vacuum cleaner that works.

neverornow · 25/08/2021 15:34

Tin opener. I just cannot be arsed buying a new one despite our current one not working for a good 2 years now.
I have no problem splurging almost 200 quid on kids clothes from Next though!

@Becca8675309
@baffledcoconut

The very one - and not even the electric version, just the hand held.

Culinaire magican - cuts tins 'like butter' 😂@Moonshine5

MelbourneTerrace · 25/08/2021 18:41

@polkadotpjs

This is the frying pan (and other pans I have) - fab - listed on this site in different sizes. Expensive but worth it.
I don't mind the expense so much as spending and finding something is rubbish.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/08/2021 20:51

Salt shaker. Ive needed one for about 5 years. We all use the plastic one the salt comes in. Which ds 13 seems incapable of using so I have to say his chips everytime!
No idea why I don't just buy one!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/08/2021 20:54

I don't know why we should still need tin openers to be honest. It should be a requirement that all tinned food manufacturers put those little pull rings on their tins. From now on I'm boycotting tins without pull rings!

@ballerina1971

I watched a programme years ago that said to put tea spoons in a pot of boiling water, with scrunched balls of tinfoil floating on the top to get rid of stains. I have no idea if it works though.

Belledan1 · 25/08/2021 21:00

A run of the mill cheap whisk for eggs etc. I either use a fork or a tiny whisk that I got in a hot chocolate mug.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. It's the sentimental value of the spoons that make me keep them.

I'm so thrilled to have written a self loathing thread and found I'm not alone. I bet I still forget to get a measuring jug at IKEA mind you

A new kitchen roll holder. The one I have now I bought when I first moved out at 17. I'm 38 now. It's bright green plastic and doesn't go with anything else in the kitchen.

mathanxiety · 25/08/2021 23:19

Land yard = lanyard?

Prettybubblesintheair · 26/08/2021 15:09

Mine are bras and knickers, tights and a nail brush. I spend a fortune on make up/skin care. Less of a fortune on clothing as I tend to buy on vinted or eBay but still have no problem in buying lots of new clothing but basics that I NEED rather than want I’m useless!

polkadotpjs · 26/08/2021 20:08

Sony serious IKEA list is garlic press, frying pan (but which?), bowls and plates to replace those I've chipped, new fish slice - why do we call it that? I mean a flipper thing for frying pan, storage boxes/ shelf and drawer organiser , scissors, freezer bags, bath mat
Anything else
OMG- the bloody measuring jug. I'll forget won't i? I think I'm broken

You will. You will also spend £300 on sundry items you didn't go for. Tis the law of IKEA.

You will also experience "loganberry" and reminded yourself why you didn't like it last time. A Daim bar will feature, option on last minute hot dog.

Yesitsbess · 26/08/2021 21:41

Reminded? Yes that's exactly what I meant to say...

blueshoes · 26/08/2021 21:43

I have soft bras from John Lewis I used before I had ds and dd and after I finished bf-ing. The dcs are now 18 and 15 years old respectively. I still use the bras daily (and darn any holes).
