Let me explain. I need a new measuring jug. The measures have been washed off my glass ones and my plastic one is not easy to read. They're cheap yet I have been struggling for about 2 years and never really sure I've measured correctly meaning some failed bread and the odd annoyance most days. Why haven't o bought one? I fear it's symptomatic of other flaws
Tell me yours and make me feel less of a weirdo

Garlic crush thing, I cook with garlic every day, and have to squash it and then chop with knife. Every time I do this, I remember. It has been six years or so.

TwinMama6 · 24/08/2021 23:12

@DifficultBloodyWoman

Measuring cups. I can use one of the four measuring jugs I have (one of which should also be replaced because most of the lines have been washed off) but I want cups because they are small and the perfect size. But I just haven’t done it yet. How much could measuring cups possibly cost?
Poundland have sturdy measuring cups 😁

Really??? If an item needs replacing and its cheap and available, I try to buy a new one asap. If the original was good (effective), I try to buy the same again, but if not then I buy an upgrade. I have a gripe with tins and manual mechanical tin openers (the ones you turn by hand). It used to be that cheap tin openers opened every type of tin can, and they seemed to work very well, lasting years. Now both cheap and expensive ones seem to fail after about 5 uses. I think the way cans are manufactured has changed too, making it difficult. I keep buying new openers, but to no avail. A couple of years ago I bought a mechanical one from Lidl. It didn't have second arm to grip the tin, and after numerous attempts I gave up. I totally failed to open any tin with it. It baffled me, so I bought a cheaper one in B&M and it worked. Two months later, it fails. Aaaagh! So, perhaps now I am procrastinating before investing in another. I take it all back.

A few new bath mats. Mine are more rags than mats at this point.

OhYeahyeahyeah · 25/08/2021 05:02

Washing basket! Mine has a huge crack in it but I still use it every day!

Leontine · 25/08/2021 05:47

I have a multi bulb light fitting which I need to put one more bulb in but I I keep looking at it and thinking…ahh fuck it. Grin

Save yourself time and stinky fingers and buy frozen garlic. Life changer.
onanoff · 25/08/2021 06:58

Loads of stuff! Underwear, kitchen scales. Clothes pegs! I dont have enough and yet i never buy more!

Ddot · 25/08/2021 07:32

Pants old tatty ugly, you know the comfy ones you just can't part with. Clothes Pegs that explode when you use them, spring bit goes into orbit and makes you spit out a bad word. I am down to four pegs so need to buy again.

Bedsheets4knickers · 25/08/2021 07:34

Frying pan , I'm annoyed at myself every time I use my old ruined one .
Clothes horse is another mines on its last legs .

Toooldforthis321 · 25/08/2021 08:02

@OhYeahyeahyeah same. The crack kept pinching me though so I threw it away and still haven't replaced it. Used it for over a year though.

polkadotpjs · 25/08/2021 08:16

While we talk frying pans, which is good? For eggs specifically? I had a lovely porcelain one but someone washed it at camping instead of me and never been the same since!

A non slip mat for the bath (with shower over).
Just keep forgetting to look for one.

Ditto a good spatula - current one is pretty rubbish but again keep forgetting to look. And although it was actually on my list the other day, by the time I’d got everything else I was laden and couldn’t be bothered.

Terrhins · 25/08/2021 08:44

Kid’s hangers to sort out their clothes & get ready for school.
Also an oven light turner thing as we can’t get ours open to change the light.

ConstanceGracy · 25/08/2021 08:45

Another one for measuring jugs.
Have a chipped glass one and a plastic one that’s not even see-thru anymore so I have to hold it up to the light and squint to work out the measurements.
Also keep meaning to get one of those things that breaks up beef mince easier rather than use the wooden spatula that takes ages.

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 25/08/2021 09:00

A bath towel.

Every time I'm in IKEA picking up little bits of cheap things I probably don't need whenever I come to the towel bit I think '£12 for that big towel, hmm maybe next time'. Despite the fact I'd use it daily, I need it and I drop a tenner on a bottle of wine no problem which gets drunk in a matter of hours.

janj2301 · 25/08/2021 09:04

You'll all hate me I usually have back ups of many smal kitchen bathroom items, so I have a spare pair of oven gloves in a draw I use when the main pair are in the wash, when one set needs replacing I use the spare and buy another set as spare. Although I do wait to the last possible minute to buy new knickers, my mum would have died of shame if I'd had an accident!!!

Justploddingon · 25/08/2021 09:18

Kitchen tongs. Ours have an annoying metal clip that slides down when you are trying to turn sausages which infuriates me. Walked past a clip less pair in Wilko for £3 yesterday and didn't buy them. Now kicking myself 🙂

Justploddingon · 25/08/2021 09:20

Ddot yes also didn't buy pegs. Mine are brittle and snap making me jump and swear every time!

I don't think you can beat Tefal frying pans but for fried eggs specifically I always buy the 4.99 ones from Home Bargains. No sticking whatsoever, the eggs glide around the pan once cooked. Can't stand my eggs sticking. However, one of my kids always ends up scratching it by using the bloody metal fish slice rather than the lovely non scratch plastic one so I then have to replace. I figure their cheap enough for me not to have a right wobbler when having to replace.
rosegoldwatcher · 25/08/2021 09:24

@DroopyClematis

A complete 'no' to the Flash mop.

Am now thinking about Pyrex baking trays.

I have a Mason Cash jug which has the measurements on the inside. Game changer.

I need recommendations for a foot scrubby mat for my shower. Looked at loads on Amazon but they have varying reviews.

I bought this one: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B087CHJLXQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

It came yesterday so I have only used it once, but already my feet feel smoother.
It has, generally, good reviews.

LemonadeSunshine · 25/08/2021 09:29

A couple of years ago I had the same tin opener issue, always used to buy the traditional two arm metal one. I took a chance on the Joseph Joseph round one, IT'S AMAZING!!! Pnce you have the knack of clicking it on it's seriously the hands down best kitchen item Grin

To ask what cheap item you keep putting off buying?
venus22 · 25/08/2021 09:33

@aworldofourown

A land yard! I only just ordered one a few weeks ago, it took me 10 years!!!!!!! No kidding!! It's only a couple of quid. Was just one of those things I put off, I'd add to basket and forget to checkout or think I'll do it later. I told everyone about the land yard after it arrived, only took 10 years
What is a land yard? It can't be land or a yard, at the price you mention. What is it?
DroopyClematis · 25/08/2021 09:48

Thank you @rosegoldwatcher!

On the case now.
