Do they mean US size 6? The lady is in Wales.
I’m only 2 inches shorter and weigh 9st 6lb and wear size 10-12.
Well done to her for losing the weight though. Just confused by her clothing size.

She's done really well.
Next and M&S size 6 are generous though, even primark seems to have relaxed its sizes. We must be heading for US sizing.

CounsellorTroi · 23/08/2021 10:24

I’m 5ft 2 and at 8.5 stone I was a 6-8. At two stone heavier I am a 12.

Auntienumber8 · 23/08/2021 10:29

I’m half an inch taller and have been a size 4 UK when I was very ill and weighed probably about 7.5 stone. Not an eating disorder illness by the way. When I was young I was a size 6 to 8 and weighed about 8.5 stone. Now in middle age and with some mobility issues which means no more hardcore exercise I guess I’m about 9.5 stone, maybe a little less. I do still fit in to jeans I bought a few years ago that are a size 10.

Amz6219 · 23/08/2021 10:32

I'm (pre pregnancy) 9 stone 10 and 5'3 - size 10/12 depending on the shop

poorbuthappy · 23/08/2021 10:33

5ft 5 and at my lowest 9st 7. size 8 poss, more like a 10.

Peanutsandchilli · 23/08/2021 10:33

I'm 5'4" and was a size 6 at around 7st. At 9st12lb I was around a 12.

thecatneuterer · 23/08/2021 10:36

Having said what I said above, I did the other day order some trousers from TK Maxx in a size 6. I could have got an extra person in them. I returned them and reordered in a 4 (the smallest size they do) and they are still far too big, (but they were very cheap and I like them so keeping them anyway). But what I have taken from this experience is that some sizing is bonkers, and not that I am in fact a size 2 :)

CorrBlimeyGG · 23/08/2021 10:37

The problem with articles like this, is that in turn it leads to very unhealthy discussions that become more and more extreme. We've got posters with BMIs of less than 16 and more than 28, both claiming to be size 6.

(If your BMI is less than 16 please seek medical help, if you're not already. BMI is not everything, but a measure that low is very dangerous and can result in long term health problems.)

ComtesseDeSpair · 23/08/2021 10:39

She’s done brilliantly, but isn’t the photo in that article photoshopped? I’m sure I can see curves where straight lines should be in the background where its been altered. Bad media.

I’ve long given up aligning weight with size. There was a point at which every single one of my ribs was visible and you could have impaled yourself on my hip bones, and I still couldn’t have crammed myself into anything smaller than a 10. She looks petite, which makes a big difference.

SpaceBethSmith · 23/08/2021 10:39

@thecatneuterer you do realise that muscle doesn’t sit on the body the same way as fat, right? Most people guess that her weight is 8st or less. It isn’t.

Singleorigincoffee · 23/08/2021 10:40

Could be muscle weight if she is super fit. (In which case. I am super jealous)

Also vanity sizing.

OrganicAvocado · 23/08/2021 10:40

poullou

Why does it matter? If she says she's a 6, why not believe her.

It’s not about her. It’s about me! I’m 5’2” and weigh less than her yet am size 10-12 in most shops. I can squeeze into a supermarket size 8. The last time I was a comfortable size 8 I weighed 8st and when I was 7 stone and practically skeletal I fit into a size 6. So I read this article about a woman who wears size 6-8 and is taller and weighs more than me and I wonder how on earth.

Of course I realise that. What I struggle to believe is that the disparity could be so great. I'm not suggesting that anyone is lying, just that it sounds incredible.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 23/08/2021 10:44

I thought the image with the very slim waist was photoshopped too!

Not great to do an article about weight loss that is going to be so dishonest.

3ormorecharactersss · 23/08/2021 10:47

I’m 8.6 stone and 5.5 and a size 8…but weight doesn’t always correlate size does it?

I recently found a pair of combat style trousers in M&S size 10 and very loose however I also have some more formal black trouser that are size 12 (from M&S a year or so ago) and are too tight. Most shop sizing is very inconsistent. There are some trendy box-style tops that are meant to be very big and baggy so I guess I could fit into the very smallest size of those but I wouldn’t then claim I was a size 4. I have size 10 hips, 12 waist and 14 bust (though wear size 12 tops mostly) and I’m very short and at the top end of normal BMI (bordering on overweight) at less than this lady’s weight.

@SpaceBethSmith

My personal trainer friend is 5”2 and 11st, wears a size 6. She is TINY.
Exactly this - she'll have a higher muscle mass than most and low body fat. This means you weigh more than the average person wearing that dress size, even allowing for vanity sizing and differences between retailers, but be smaller.

If you want to lose weight and get into smaller clothes, do weight training. It transforms your body shape making you more compact.

Not weight alone, but weight and height usually does, unless you are a bodybuilder or elite athlete.

I’ve always had a suspicion that the size 4-6 is so teens can fit into clothes from adult shops. I used to find it very difficult finding stuff that would fit when I was 15-18 yo. Although of course there are women slim enough to fit them. It’s great that she did that well but the article is rubbish if the information is false.

Tal45 · 23/08/2021 10:52

She looks like she weighs less than that from her picture I think, her waist is really tiny, but as she wants to be a personal trainer maybe she's quite muscley and that's what's weighing.
If she is over 9 stone then I'd be surprised if the she was really 4 - 6 though, I'm taller than her, I've never been over 9 stone (low 8's generally) and while I might occasionally fit in a 6 I generally wear an 8.

Mammyloveswine · 23/08/2021 10:53

I was a size 8-10 at 9 stone 12 at 5 foot 5.

I'm now 13 stone and a comfortable 14 (am losing weight atm but after a second child I don't think I'll ever get back into my size 8s!).

She looks fantastic but I'd be surprised if she's a size 6! American size 4-6 sounds about right, uk 8-10.

Crumpetsandhoney · 23/08/2021 10:57

I think this depends on your frame. I am 5.5 At 9.12 I would be 8 on top and ten to twelve on bottom. I am a stone heavier now and ten on top 12 to 14 on bottom. It depends where you carry the weight.

Dixiechickonhols · 23/08/2021 10:58

Depends on body shape snd where you shop/style of clothes. Plus if you have excess skin or not. I’m top end healthy bmi after losing a lot of weight and am a 10 or 12 in Next, M & S, Hush, Boden, Sosander. I have a couple of 8 t shirts.

LadyFannyButton · 23/08/2021 10:59

8 stone 5
5ft 9
Size 10.
I wonder if she has the awful wrinkly belly skin I have after losing 3 stone?
She’s lost an incredible amount.

NotSonicTheHedgehog · 23/08/2021 11:01

I’m 5ft 1 just over 8 stone and wear a size 6. I’m into weightlifting though (as in heavy weightlifting). Prior to that I was 7.5 stone and a size 8 so muscle to fat ratio does make a difference. I sometimes have to get an 8 in tops because of broader shoulders vs the rest of my body.
