Do they mean US size 6? The lady is in Wales.
I’m only 2 inches shorter and weigh 9st 6lb and wear size 10-12.
Well done to her for losing the weight though. Just confused by her clothing size.

Wow! This shows how much sizing has changed over the years, I am 5ft 8 and when younger 64kg which is just over 9 stone and I was a size 10-12, no way would I be a 4-6 or an 8.

Ponoka7 · 24/08/2021 08:20

Just to solve the arguments about sizing. I have vintage dress patterns. This is from the 70's.
I don't think that she is lying or sucking in, as said. Only because I've seen what can be achieved by weight training, yet women stay 'heavy'.

Coogee · 24/08/2021 09:14

How vintage is it? It’s in cm so presumably not that old if from the UK.

A 12 is coming in at just under 27” and an 8 at just over 24”

Coogee · 24/08/2021 09:15

Waist, that is.

From which country? I could imagine it more from the 60s when Women aspired to look like Twiggy. My mum was a teen in the 60s and at age 19 , at 5 feet tall, weighed 6 stone (on her wedding day). She was never diagnosed with anorexia but these days she would have been. That’s a BMI of 16 and seriously underweight. She was probably classified as a typical size 8 at the time.

I am a child of the 70s, and a size 10 was always supposed to be a 22" waist. I have never had a 22" waist. Even when I was under 7 stone and everyone said "ooh Balloon you've got such a tiny waist" it was 24".

The original sizes were laid down post war when there wasn't much food and what there was got given to men and children.

mstroutpout · 24/08/2021 10:33

She's done incredibly well and should be hugely proud but no, she's not a 4-6.

That would put her at the smallest size available in most shops her chest and arms would need to be much smaller. Perhaps she's stumbled across an item of clothing that's a 4-6 and it's fit. I've been size 10 at my smallest but had a couple of items 6-8 and used to tell myself that was my size Grin

Age 5-6 children’s clothes are for a 22” waist!

The 1970s pattern Ponoka7 attached a picture of shows a 10 at just under 26” waist.

JulesCobb · 24/08/2021 11:26

I love the fact she lost 12 stone after separating from her husband. It just reminded me of all the threads on mumsnet when someone posts about their knob of a husband criticising their weight, and there is always someone who says something like, ‘get rid of him and lose 12 stone of useless fat straight away.’

Yeah it was mildly funny the first time .

If it’s a 1970s pattern. As a pp pointed out, we weren’t using metric measurements then so I suspect it’s later.

Could it be Australian? Not sure when they went metric but the did do a complete changeover.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9922199/amp/Woman-23-reveals-shed-80lbs-just-TEN-MONTHS.html

More madness in the news today. This woman started off at 224lb (16st) which they claim was a size 12. Now she’s 144lb (10st 4) which they claim is a size 2. It’s more likely that her current weight is a size 12!

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/08/2021 16:53

It says at her heaviest she was 224lb and now she weighs 124lb, which is 8 stone 12lb. A Canadian size 16 would be a 20 here in the UK.

She looks great - why knock it?

CecilyP · 24/08/2021 16:53

Do you think they use American sizes in Canada? However, it does say struggle to fit in a 12 not that she actually was a 12 which looking at the before pic she definitely wasn’t! If American sizes she now would be a British size 6 to 8 which wouldn’t be too unreasonable

CecilyP · 24/08/2021 16:55

She does look great but why the need to exaggerate about sizes.

OrganicAvocado · 24/08/2021 16:55

Blueleah that lady is in Montreal so I’d assume Canadian sizes. Not sure how they compare with U.K., but I wear U.K. 12 and I’m just over half her heavy weight.

OP posts:
Blueleah · 24/08/2021 16:57

It doesn’t say a Canadian size 12. It’s a British newspaper so I’d expect to see British sizes. No way she was a UK size 12 before. It’s just misleading for people and makes you feel bad about yourself - I’m a size 12 so that obviously means I’m as fat as she was. Also I find it misleading that none of these articles ever mention that the person needed skin removal surgery, but that’s another topic.

Coogee · 24/08/2021 17:00

She also looks about four feet tall.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/08/2021 17:01

Why does it matter? If she says she's a 6, why not believe her. Because the three figures together don't make sense, the weight, the height and the clothing size. Any two of them could be correct, but it's unlikely all three are.

Blueleah · 24/08/2021 17:03

Exactly. At 144lb she can’t be a UK size 2. Or even a US size 2 which is a UK size 6. A 10 stone woman of average height is not going to be a UK size 6.

The article also claims her weight is both 144lb and 124lb. Which proves they’re talking rubbish.

Coogee · 24/08/2021 17:04

Surely a quick glance in the mirror will make it less obvious.

It’s the Daily Fail for goodness sake!

Blueleah · 24/08/2021 17:10

No if you suffer from body dysmorphia, low self esteem, anorexia, bulimia, or a variety of other mental conditions. They’re saying she was a size 12 before. That makes a lot of size 12 women feel bad about themselves.

It might not say Canadian sizes but as she's from Canada and looks larger you could have a wild stab in dark that's what they mean surely? They'll have lifted the story from a Canadian paper. Not everyone needs skin removal and it doesn't look like she's had it as you can still see the crinkles on her stomach. She's young so theres every chance her skin was elastic enough to cope.
