Do they mean US size 6? The lady is in Wales.
I’m only 2 inches shorter and weigh 9st 6lb and wear size 10-12.
Well done to her for losing the weight though. Just confused by her clothing size.

Really muscular people often have slimmer frames for their equivalent weight and some people are small boned. I got pretty chubby at one point and was a 12, when I was really slim I was a 2-4 whereas my very skinny Olympian (but no longer competing and very skeletal) boss was a 12. I don't think you can really tell from clothes photos without measurements.

Wexone · 23/08/2021 12:06

9ST 4- 5FT 5 - Am a size 8 ( a European size 34) M&S, Pennys and Dunnes say that a European 34 is a size 6. So my wardrobe consists of 6 or 8, xs and some smalls. I have a very small frame, very petite on top. If i put on weight it goes straight to my belly. Sounds like its America sizes she is talking about

Peacrock · 23/08/2021 12:08

No she isn't. What's frustrating is that she has evidently done absolutely fantastic and looks absolutely incredible, so why the need to lie or for them to print something that isn't true and feed into unrealistic body images etc is depressing.

mam0918 · 23/08/2021 12:08

Im always baffled by this... Im confused how some really short and much heavier people than me often claim to be half my size but I assume theres some creativeness in the way they discribe themselves.

Im currently 10.5st at 5ft7 and a size 12-14 (wierdly inbetween these sizes so nothing currently fits right) but im not toned at all so thats mostly fat, when I get more toned I will probably be a stadard 12.

At my smallest I was 7st (clinically underweight) at 5ft7 and because of my bones at my widest points (so hips and shoulders) I was still a 12 but I had tiny boobs and everywhere else mesured a 6-8.

I know people who are barely 5ft clearly look 'curvier' than me, weight 11st and claim they are a size 6-8 and its like 'why lie?' because something just doesnt make sense in that.

Body shape effects things too though, as I mentioned Im 'big boned' so even at annorexic weights my hips bones measure a size 12. My friend who weighed 4st more than me wore size 10 jeans though because she had long skinny legs (5ft9 height) and small hips but she carries ALL her weight top heavy with a bit of a belly and HUGE boobs.

Her top size was wildly different from her bottom size though but I guess if she said she was a size 10 and I was a size 12 then its not a lie.

WTFisNext · 23/08/2021 12:10

Frankly weight/size is irrelevant. No one believes I'm still obese because I've dropped from a size 22 to almost a size 14 in a year (can get it one but not comfortable)...but I'm still 5 stone overweight.

Most people I know at size 14 aren't obese, they may be overweight but not tipping in at 35 BMI.

What I'm truly amazed by is how little extra skin the woman is carrying! She's done an incredible job to turn around her health and I genuinely hope she sticks with the healthier way of living for her own sake and to show that it can be done for those of us still trying our hardest to do the same.

lljkk · 23/08/2021 12:11

Few things about these threads never cease to surprise me.

  1. People believe that clothes sizes are meaningful & a good way to compare body size
  1. People don't know there are limits to how little/much muscle a female body can hold. Much misinformation arises from this misunderstanding. Boundaries are about 20% of total weight for someone with muscle wasting & bedridden (intestines, heart) and about 40% for an extreme muscle bound fitness guru (who would have to work very hard to maintain it).

2.1
Suppose a 60 kg female, who is 40% muscle (20% the modifiable part), 20% of 60 kg = 12 kg.
2.2
1 litre fat = 0.9 kg, 1 litre of muscle = 1.05 kg
12 kg of muscle is 11.43 litres
2.3
Imagine that Our 60 kg female becomes very ill, so all of her 20% fitness muscle converts to identical volume fat, 11.43 litres of fat = 10.3 kg

2.4 The maximum difference that converting muscle to fat or back again can make to the weight of our 60 kg female is ... 1.7 kg. < 4 lbs. Honestly, the way MNers carry on, you'd think it was 15 lbs or more !!!

Gwenhwyfar · 23/08/2021 12:12

"I’m 5’4” and 8 stone 4 lb. I’d say I’m a size 8. When I was 8 stone (in my 20s) I was a size 6-8."

I'm an inch shorter and when I was 8 stone in my teens I was a size 12. Shows you how much sizes have gone up.

phishy · 23/08/2021 12:13

I suspect she has one size 6 top and so she has said she's size 6 to the journo.

I remember when I was 8.5 stone and size 10 when I was in my 20s. I had one size 6 top from Warehouse and was chuffed, but I knew that I wasn't really size 6 (and had no particular aspirations to be).

SquirryTheSquirrel · 23/08/2021 12:14

She looks great and is a healthy weight so why on earth does it matter what her dress size is?

Sunnygold · 23/08/2021 12:14

Off topic but it’s impossible to lose that much weight without having an apron of skin. She’s obviously has surgery that wasn’t mentioned in the article.

phishy · 23/08/2021 12:15

I'm currently 11 stone / size 14 and trying to get back to 9 stone, and I'm amazed at what Simply Be believe is a size 10. Their size 10 fits me, no way am I currently a size 10.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/08/2021 12:15

"Am a size 8 ( a European size 34) M&S, Pennys and Dunnes say that a European 34 is a size 6. "

Because of size inflation in the UK, I'd say that a European 34 is now a 6. My British size 10 clothes are 38s. (38 was a 12 when I was young).

FastFood · 23/08/2021 12:15

I'm a size 6 (and sometimes 8), 5'5 and around 7.7st.
I don't think she's a 4-6 at all but not really important.

AngryWhompingWillow · 23/08/2021 12:17

The lady has almost certainly photoshopped her waist. It looks bizarre IMO.

billiebeeme · 23/08/2021 12:20

I'd struggle to believe it for that weight and height but she does look quite tiny in the pics.

I'm 8stone and 5ft1 and wear a size 8 sometimes a 6 if it's generous.

BeefSupreme · 23/08/2021 12:21

I’m the same height as her. I was 7 stone 5 lbs when I was fitting into UK size 4 clothing

OrganicAvocado · 23/08/2021 12:22

CinnamonJellyBeans

Look at the photos of her post weight loss. Do you actually have the same proportions as her? Her limbs are very muscular and there is no excess fat, even on her face. Her BMI might be 23, but she looks like she carries more muscle than regular women. She says she spends a lot of time at the gym.

Well I have have never set foot in a gym, so clearly that makes a difference. I have BMI of 24.3, am 2 inches shorter and 6lb lighter. My measurements are 34-28-36. So no I don’t have a tiny waist but I’m certainly not carrying a lot of excess weight other than my mum tum. I’m quite active. I walk a couple of miles most days.

Everyone is very different. I'm a 28K bust, waist is smaller than 28 inches and my shoulders won't go below a 10 but I could well need a 12 (in some tailored jackets/structured dresses with sleeves).

To accommodate my bust I generally need a 12 but probably a 14 or a 16 in a fabric with little give, although they will be an iffy fit across the shoulders.

Apart from the bust, most of my weight is on my thighs and I have substantial calves as well.

I have a lot of stretch skater dresses in a 10 as these tend to be the most flattering fit for me (bust). Probably vanity sized shop 10s because the more fashionable shops tend not to suit my shape, whatever the size.

I weigh around 80kg at a 10/12 in stuff I most often wear (other than gym leggings - where I need to get a small for them to start up!)

Once you know how to dress your shape you have less need to know sizes in things that will never work (skinny jeans for instance - if they get over my calves they sag off my hips and bum!)

MouseholeCat · 23/08/2021 12:28

If she is quite muscular or depending on her fat distrubtion I could see some size 6 items fitting her. At 5'4 and 8 stone I was a 6 (pre-pregnancy) but in some stores the minimum size (whether 4 or 6) would still be too big for me as they wre sized to very different demographics.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 23/08/2021 12:29

A couple of miles every day vs going to the gym. I can do two miles a day going to the fridge and back

See, that's the difference between her body and yours and why you're not a size 6 and she is.

Sorted.

3Br1tnee · 23/08/2021 12:29

Now a slimline 9st 12lb and wearing a dress size 6, she has a healthy BMI of 23.5.

Well that's a load of bollocks, a 4-6 looks underweight, a 4-6 wouldn't be bang in the middle of the healthy BMI range.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 23/08/2021 12:30

I'm sure she knows what dress size she is a lot more than anyone on this downright nasty thread.

RumblyMumbly · 23/08/2021 12:32

22 stone at 5ft 4! I can't imagine how hard that would be to move about.

Same height at 8st 2 I was size 8, 8st 9 size 10 and now 9st 9 (eek) size 12 . Anything below sounds like vanity sizing.

Well done to her, she must feel much better for it. Need to take a leaf out of her book and get moving more to lose some lockdown pounds.

Fromage · 23/08/2021 12:32

At the other end of the scale, I'm 5' 4" and when I was a size 26 I weighed several stone less than her at her heaviest.

So maybe it's American sizes, maybe she is just heavier than average for her size.
