AIBU that our holiday lodge isn't what we booked?

Nicer problems to have and all. I know we're lucky to be able to have a break at all.

Both DP and I are tall, both 6 foot plus, so I made sure we booked, and paid a lot of money for, a big enough bed. Otherwise we have to sleep all curled up together, or with our feet hanging off the end.

Aibu to be annoyed that we've been given standard double?

@SofiaMichelle I’ve left holiday early on more than one occasion because I can’t bear to have another sleepless night in a tiny double. I’m not even tall like op but being squashed together with DH & his restless legs makes for a miserable holiday.

MangoBiscuit · 18/08/2021 15:52

Spoke to the same manager that I did yesterday, told him we did manage to get some sleep, but not much, and the chair solution isn't ideal. As we're only here a few more days, we can probably manage, but it is NOT what we paid for, and I wanted to discuss a partial refund in light of that.

He seemed surprised that it wasn't the end of the matter. Tried to tell me the bed wasn't just a double (I used their tape measure in front of them, it is EXACTLY 190cm long, which standard double length) I said it's irrelevant, it isn't what was advertised, so not what I booked and paid for. It's unfortunate that it's such an essential for us, but this is why I'm careful to read the details ( will be emailing for confirmation if I ever holiday away from my own bed again!)

He needed to escalate to his manager, who was due in shortly. They double checked my number, and said they'd be in touch. That was 4 hours ago. DP has just gone out to buy me wine and bacon, once he's back, I am going to head over and insist on a resolution today. And some extra towels to try @Chikasan's suggestion!

@Grinch48

I know with airnb if you stay in the accommodation but you have a problem - like the OP they will pretty much refuse a refund or partial refund on the basis that you have stayed so it couldn’t have been that bad You have to leave and complain as soon as you arrive with AirB and document it with photos / videos to stand a chance of getting any sort of refund on a non refundable booking
Most people don't have the option of simply staying elsewhere or going home
MangoBiscuit · 18/08/2021 16:05

@Chikasan, you are a genius! I remembered the spare duvet and pillows in the cupboard and have used those. Seems to work, and has to be better than half a dining set in the room. Thank you.

I think the constant ignoring of the issue / yourself would piss me off as much as the bed

Unsure33 · 18/08/2021 16:56

If they don’t give you a refund take pictures and go straight to small claims court . Won’t take long and it’s really simple .

SofiaMichelle · 18/08/2021 17:00
@SofiaMichelle I guess you are not 6ft3, or even 6ft1 then

Being entertained by other people’s discomfort…. Isn’t there a word for that? Schadenfreude? Nice…
I'm 5'8" but DH is 6'4" as I've already mentioned in a previous post.

I also mentioned that we're also careful to look for big beds with no footboard, etc, when going away.

I'm not having a go at OP at all - I was talking about the outrage from other people with their overly dramatic "furious!" and "ruined!" holiday woes, not the OP's predicament!

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 18/08/2021 17:19

Ok, yes, fair enough Grin

I’ve become quite adept at the afore mentioned towel technique myself

BritishSummertime · 18/08/2021 17:25

This thread has inspired me.to check if our bed in our caravan next week.is a king size of caravan king size so.I'm prepared for DH and I being squished up together

motherofawhirlwind · 18/08/2021 17:31

I so understand. OH is 6'6". The time I spend finding king size beds, divan style, no foot board or fancy end bit, is extraordinary. DD is heading for 6'. Am dreading trying to find places with 2 suitable beds! Hope you get your refund and some sleep. It's infuriating when listings are wrong!

pinkpantherpink · 18/08/2021 17:45

Hi. I feel for you and your experience.

A lodge is typically a double width caravan. Something we have used often.

You've paid a premium for the lodge and that is normal. Prices are higher this year for well known reasons.

Sometimes we've had a king size in a space suitable for a double which has made it difficult to actually get in to the bed.

I would absolutely ask for a partial refund. Unfortunately staff on the ground aren't always decision makers. Consideration needs to be given to the fact that you've had to hang around a lot waiting for them to contact you.

Best of luck

graysquirrel · 18/08/2021 17:46

Definitely NBU. I have similar in that I'm allergic to feathered duvets/pillows. I always check before booking and include a note to company. Still I get feathered things and they look at me like I'm crazy and don't want the 'luxurious' bedding they've provided, like I made my allergy up. This happens more often than you'd believe!!

YDBear · 18/08/2021 17:50

If you booked the place on the understanding that it had a 200cm (king size) bed, and it doesn’t then you should certainly complain and demand a discount. If you confirmed the bed size by email tell them you’ll print out the mails and take them to Trading Standards if they don’t cough up.

nopuppiesallowed · 18/08/2021 18:01

Don't forget to tweet about this and copy them in. Shaming on public sites often works. It resulted in Bristol airport refunding a significant amount of money to my elderly father on one occasion and an upgraded mattress for my father in law on another occasion. Both times the dads had had bad experiences - I don't make a habit of complaining - but really poor service needs to be addressed.

I don’t know why anywhere even has standard doubles anymore, so Uncomfortable for two people! Unless it’s a tiny tiny space king size should be standard everywhere. King size is literally a minimum. Super king is what I expect on holiday and at home.

HermioneKipper · 18/08/2021 18:16

Cheeky beggars. Hope they sort today OP. They should be tripping over themselves to apologise and throw in some extras too. I’d threaten them with trading standards if they try to mess you around

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/08/2021 18:40

What did the manager come up with @MangoBiscuit?

Mummyrowland · 18/08/2021 18:42

Hope they refund you and that the wine is nice z

IHateCoronavirus · 18/08/2021 18:57

Don’t let it go op. It isn’t what you paid for, and others will struggle as you have. Leave an honest review on trip advisor etc.

Thehop · 18/08/2021 19:03

They could at least give you a meal voucher and a bottle of wine. Sounds like they don’t want to part with a bean.

Newuname199987 · 18/08/2021 19:17

@budgiegirl

*Etulosba I’m old and a king size bed has been 5 feet wide by six feet six inches long as long as I can remember*

Same - I bought a super king size bed over 20 years ago, and it was 6ft wide (not sure about the length!).

I thought it had always been single 3ft, double 4ft6", kingsize 5ft, super kingsize 6ft. At least as long as I can remember. And did we ever have queensize in the UK? It's different when booking accommodation in the US

Yes I agree with this. It’s got confusing with some American terminology being used in the UK now. King is 5 feet and super king is 6 feet. Super king is longer too, not sure length of a King though compared to standard double. We’ve never had queen sizes in the UK.
Yespresh · 18/08/2021 19:17

I am totally with you on this. I’ll often book a hotel room with two single beds and push them together. Nothing worse than a tiny bed and sometimes the sag in the middle that has you clinging to the edge. I have huge empathy for you.

Yespresh · 18/08/2021 19:18

Kingsize and super king are 2/3” longer than a double bed.
