AIBU that our holiday lodge isn't what we booked?

Nicer problems to have and all. I know we're lucky to be able to have a break at all.

Both DP and I are tall, both 6 foot plus, so I made sure we booked, and paid a lot of money for, a big enough bed. Otherwise we have to sleep all curled up together, or with our feet hanging off the end.

Aibu to be annoyed that we've been given standard double?

If you paid for a big bed, you should have a big bed. I’d be annoyed too.

CabbagesGreen · 17/08/2021 09:19

You'd be unreasonable not to say anything, you need to give them the chance to put it right.

fringeneedsatrim · 17/08/2021 09:20

YANBU

I hate sleeping with DH in a standard double, neither of us get any sleep so I always check that it's at least a king size bed. I'd be very pissed off to be told I was booking a king and arrive to find a standard double.

Theonlyoneiknow · 17/08/2021 09:21

Absolutely complain. I would be really pissed off, would never book somewhere with a double as I know it would mean a really bad night's sleep. It has happened to us in the past and we ended up with the kids in the double and us in the twins!

MangoBiscuit · 17/08/2021 09:22

It's 190cm long. No tape measure, but I pressed my head against the headboard, and checked where my heels hit. Definitely a double. Funnily enough, the duvet COVER is for a kingsize, but the duvet is a double. (Found kingsize duvet in the wardrobe, so we won't be cold tonight)

DP has just cooked me porridge so I'm not a total grumpy when we go speak to reception, heading over in a sec. Thank you all, feeling better just knowing I'm not being fussy.

Another tall family and I always look for this. I'd have been in reception already!

DoubleTweenQueen · 17/08/2021 09:22

@Howshouldibehave It's a long story - bought a Queensize bed yonks ago which is 150cm wide. King was 180cm wide then.

When looking to replace mattress or buy bedding it's no longer Queen and King, but King and Superking. Don't know why it changed.

USA & Canada seem to have a lot more bed sizes than UK. Their Queens and Kings are quite different.

Stretchandsnap · 17/08/2021 09:23

This is important to me when I book holidays - definitely complain OP!

pinkcircustop · 17/08/2021 09:24

YANBU. If that’s what you paid for, that’s what you should get.

Kiduknot · 17/08/2021 09:25

Good luck

ancientgran · 17/08/2021 09:27

I feel your pain. I've complained to Premier Inn, we often stay in Premier Inn and more and more of their rooms seem to be a standard double and if you need an accessible room, DH ,you can't even choose twin beds so I lie clutching the edge of the bed with 6ft plus DH who isn't exactly skinny and is disabled and a restless sleeper. I often cling on as I nearly get pushed off the bed. I think it is a form of disability discrimination as we don't get the same choice as everyone else.

You also can't book an accessible room that is suitable for a family, we have been away with GC and had to book a family room for me and he has the accessible room to himself but of course I'm not there to assist him.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, you should complain. A bad nights sleep is always bad and it can ruin a holiday.

DoubleTweenQueen · 17/08/2021 09:27

Apologies for derailing thread off on meaningless tangent, but regardless of width expectation (150 Vs the old King which was 180cm) it should be at least 200cm in length!

Where's the coffee..........Brew

Vickim03 · 17/08/2021 09:30

I get you on this. My hubby is 6ft6 we have to look for king size too. I’d ask to be moved. Northing worse than a bad nights sleep and it wasn’t what you booked.

fringeneedsatrim · 17/08/2021 09:30

@ancientgran we've had exactly the same issue with premier inn. We use to start in them everywhere as knew you'd get a clean room and a decent size bed. The last couple of trips... including on hotel that we've stayed in many times previously, the beds have been too small. They must have changed the beds. We've now stopped using them as can't guarantee what size bed you'll get.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/08/2021 09:33

As everyone else has said, if that's what was advertised that's what should be there

Trouble is I'm not sure what they'll be able to do about it. If all the beds are doubles and they're just winging it there may not be king sized ones they can move in, and even if they go and order some they may not be there in time

It's infuriating isn't it. Like you we have used Premier Inn as you know what you are getting, clean room, decent en suite etc They do seem to have changed the beds. I think the issue for the disabled is particularly unfair. I would cope much better if we could choose twin beds. I have tried phoning hotels and asking if we can be sure of a king size, I think the change of beds is happening as new ones are needed, and also if instead of an accessible room can we have a groundfloor room with either king size or twin beds. I have had some success but as more and more beds are shrinking it seems less likely to work.

Obviously we prefer the accessible rooms as the bathrooms are better equipped for DH but if it is only a night or two we manage.

lastcall · 17/08/2021 09:39

YANBU at all. That's really taking the piss, imo.

You think that you can detect 10 cm difference in this way because that is all we are talking about ?
LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/08/2021 09:41

I always double check any bed or bedding that claims to be Kingsize, cos it is sneaking in, as PP have said that a 5ft bed is now described as kingsize.

Frazzled2207 · 17/08/2021 09:43

Nope definitely complain!

PluggingAway · 17/08/2021 09:43

YANBU at all. You have paid for something and it wasn't as advertised. Be as grumpy and complainy as you see fit.

I hope they sort it out quickly and you can get back to enjoying your break.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 17/08/2021 09:43

How annoying. I hate sharing a double with DH. He’s tall and we are both restless sleepers, so get little sleep. I’d pay extra for caravans and lodges with a king size but they rarely seem to be available, even if the room is big enough to accommodate them.

Lalliella · 17/08/2021 09:46

Of course she can. She knows whether she’s 6 foot tall or 6 foot 4. 4 inches is a big difference.

Wexone · 17/08/2021 09:47

Totally agree complain, himself is about 6.4 so we actually have a super king at home but will always make sure we have a king when go away. Drives himself wrong as he cant sleep. On another note they say for two people sharing a bed you should always go for a duvet size bigger than your bed - so for a queen get a king size duvet , it hangs better and you both get enough duvet to cuddle into.

Etulosba · 17/08/2021 09:49

I’m old and a king size bed has been 5 feet wide by six feet six inches long as long as I can remember.
