AIBU that our holiday lodge isn't what we booked?

Nicer problems to have and all. I know we're lucky to be able to have a break at all.

Both DP and I are tall, both 6 foot plus, so I made sure we booked, and paid a lot of money for, a big enough bed. Otherwise we have to sleep all curled up together, or with our feet hanging off the end.

Aibu to be annoyed that we've been given standard double?

I would be very unhappy about that. Especially after seeing the ad!

BritWifeInUSA · 18/08/2021 04:54

Looking at the pictures it’s clearly a caravan. They can call it a “lodge” all they like, it’s a caravan. Looking at the picture of the bedroom, I have to say that bed doesn’t look big enough for a king size when you see the 4 cushions (which are probably 30 x 30) across the width and not much other room. That shows it’s not much more than 4 ft 6 wide. Which is a UK double. That’s a bed for one person here in the US.

MiloAndEddie · 18/08/2021 06:37

If it’s advertised as having a king size bed then you should have a king size bed. What sort of shit is a caravan king size? YANBU

Are you suggesting that OP should have spent time forensically analysing the pictures and so was unreasonable to have been taken in by the text of the advert which stated that it was a lodge with a king size bed?

In any event this whole lodge vs caravan discussion is irrelevant, surely, unless those arguing blind that it’s “obviously a caravan” are saying that it is therefore reasonable to expect a “caravan king” only?

The walls of the accommodation could be made if gingerbread for all that it matters, the point is that it is big enough to fit the size of bed advertised.

Doidontimmm · 18/08/2021 08:27

How did you sleep?

LagneyandCasey · 18/08/2021 08:35

The pic on Google lens takes me to the hoseasons website which also clearly states a king size bed.

Dh and I aren't as tall as you op but we always look for a kingsize bed as we're used to one at home and sleeping is an important part of our holiday!

I hope you manage to get some sort of compensation, op. Like pp have said can you buy yourself a blow up for the rest of the holiday?

MangoBiscuit · 18/08/2021 09:23

We did manage to sleep, not particularly well mind, but better than the night before. I'm going to speak to the manager again in bit, and hopefully discuss a partial refund. Wish me luck!

Even if it is a caravan, who would know that king sized has a different meaning depending on if the building has foundations or not?

OwlinaTree · 18/08/2021 09:57

Good luck op! I hope you get a refund.

HopeHappy · 18/08/2021 10:00

I love staying on caravan / lodge sites but the lack of king size beds in them is what's stopped me booking them any more. I'd have done the same as the OP and booked one in this instance with the promise of a king size bed.

Do the site reviews online say anything about bed sizes @MangoBiscuit?

The description says there's a pull out sofa bed - any chance of one of you sleeping on that? Not ideal obviously, but at least it might mean both of you could sleep diagonally on a bed each?

While that is not a bad suggestion, the question remains why should they have to? If they booked a lodge (not a static caravan) with a king size bed, then that is what they should have been shown to on their arrival. They have clearly been shown to a static caravan that doesn't have a king size bed.

My earlier suggestion of the management sorting this out by rejigging who is in which unit still remains. They should have and probably could have done that once you brought it to their attention OP. You booked what you booked and you haven't received that.
They could also have placed an order for a king size bed and mattress and had it delivered in this time frame but I don't think they will have done that either.

Blossomtoes · 18/08/2021 10:57

To be honest @MangoBiscuit, I think you’ve fucked up your chance of a refund by staying and accepting the comedic attempt to make the bed bigger. It’s a bit like complaining about a meal after you’ve cleared your plate. I’d have gone home and requested a refund of the entire amount.

TheSloaneRanger · 18/08/2021 11:10

I don't think they have @Blossomtoes, they have shown that they are open to suggestions and have given them a chance to resolve the matter
I think if anything it strengthens their argument that they need the kingsize bed they booked and that was advertised

EastWestWhosBest · 18/08/2021 13:03

I thought that the attempts to make the bed bigger were done by the op not the holiday company.

HopeHappy · 18/08/2021 13:07

@LookItsMeAgain oh don't get me wrong - they definitely shouldn't have to. As they're full and are unlikely to be any more accommodating than the ridiculous suggestion of dining chairs and a folded up mattress topper I've defaulted to "making the best of it" suggestions.

I would hope a significant refund is offered for the inconvenience.

HazyDaisy123456 · 18/08/2021 13:24

Thats ridiculous. We will only book holidays with king size beds as we are both tall and on the larger side and we are used to our space at home as we have a super king.

We can’t sleep properly in a double. That attempt to extend the bed is absolutely awful and laughable. The lack of sleep and your repeated attempts to try and resolve the situation which was advertised falsely by the Company is ridiculous and both will have marred your stay with lack of sleep and unnecessary stress. I would let the TV company use your complaint as attempts to resolve the problem so far have been completely inadequate. I also hope they give you a substantial refund and change their advertising policy. You will need another holiday to get over this one OP.

Chikasan · 18/08/2021 13:38

Pull the mattress away from the headboard by 3-4 inches, roll a couple of towels up and put in the space and put your pillows on top. Just don’t sit on the end of the bed

SofiaMichelle · 18/08/2021 13:44

I have to say, this is a very entertaining thread.

I would never have guessed so many people would be "furious" and that their holidays would be "ruined " by having a double bed not a king.

fingersdoublecrossed · 18/08/2021 13:44

@Chikasan That is an excellent suggestion!

Blossomtoes · 18/08/2021 13:52

We disagree. I don’t think there’s a hope in hell of a refund now.
Grinch48 · 18/08/2021 14:20

I know with airnb if you stay in the accommodation but you have a problem - like the OP they will pretty much refuse a refund or partial refund on the basis that you have stayed so it couldn’t have been that bad
You have to leave and complain as soon as you arrive with AirB and document it with photos / videos to stand a chance of getting any sort of refund on a non refundable booking

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 18/08/2021 14:36

@SofiaMichelle I guess you are not 6ft3, or even 6ft1 then

Being entertained by other people’s discomfort…. Isn’t there a word for that? Schadenfreude? Nice…

I can be ruined by not sleeping properly because the bed size you booked for that reason (booked and paid for) isn't provided.
Waspsarearseholes · 18/08/2021 15:09

@SofiaMichelle - would you not be a bit pissed off if you'd booked a lodge with a double bed and you were given a caravan with toddler beds? If you wouldn't be then good for you but nobody I know specifically seeks and pays for specific comforts on holiday in the hope that they get a shit night's sleep for a week.

You missed the bit where OP explains the problem with shorter beds and the fact that, as a tall couple, they actively found and paid extra for a king size bed.

Not being able to sleep will ruin most things - raves and music weekenders notwithstanding.

You must be a short arse, like me!
