Spent so much on a night out - regret.

I'm 26 and trying to save for a deposit. I have £5000 saved so far
I don't usually drink. Haven't been out in 2 years. And only really drink in meals.

Went out with friends last night and I'm not sure if it's because I haven't had drink in a while but it really went to my head and I feel so embarrassed today after realising I was speaking to random people and I even bought a random woman a shot.
I wasn't even going to drink but after someone bought me a shot , I just kept buying more alcohol.
And I bought for other people too.

I just got so happy and jolly.
Checked my bank account, and I've spent £40. £40 that I didn't want to waste on alcohol.
Doesn't help I already have bad money anxiety.

I know I'm unreasonable to regret this but I just feel so much anxiety about how much I've spent after not drinking for 2 years.
I gave up alochol after hating who I become when drunk and I just feel so much regret and like I've reverted backwards.

As everyone else said, that's the hangover talking :)

I went out last Wednesday night (a SCHOOL NIGHT!) and managed to spend £100; £40 really isn't a big deal even in the context of you saving.

I know a house deposit is your key goal, but have you allocated socialising or fun spends to yourself? You might find it easier if you did - even if it's only a small amount that you can accumulate over weeks/months to have a blowout or do a really treaty thing. That way you'll feel like you can afford it :)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/08/2021 18:08

@Fullodregret3728

Ah this has just made me realise I need to sort my anxiety out. I'm clearly not normal in worrying about every single penny spent Grin
Not if it doesn't affect your ability to eat and slrrp in dry place. I think it can really be good idea to talk about it to someone. Otherwise your DP/DH eill end up on mansnet being told LTB afyer moaning about overly money controlling wife. Or even worse! He will moan about it here!😁
Jerseygirl12 · 16/08/2021 18:08

Could you try allocating an amount of money each month for totally fun money, then you may not feel as anxious if it’s in the budget?

Branleuse · 16/08/2021 18:09

you had a good time, were sociable and happy. Youre not doing this often, in fact its been 2 years. I think you shouldnt be so hard on yourself. It isnt hard to spend that much on a night out.

Jerima · 16/08/2021 18:10

Where the fuck did you get hammered for 40 quid please

Last time I went out in Shoreditch I bought a drink of something and coke in a tiny glass and the bar man says "11" I said "what?" and he said "11"

I said "I'm sorry what are you talking about 11?" And he said "11 it's 11" I looked at my watch and said "No it ain't" and he said, like I was a knob " Your drink is 11 that's how much it costs" I told him to fuck off and left the drink behind, like he didn't even say "That's 11 pounds please". Just said "11" but even if he had, I wouldn't have paid I'd have politely declined instead Grin

Don't stress over £40 please as much as you want to save, you also need a life and deserve to enjoy yourself £40 on the lash is nothing if it's not at all often. Good luck to you!

VeganCow · 16/08/2021 18:11

£40?! Was preparing to read you'd spent £££s!
I used to spend £20 and that was 30 years ago Grin

Echobelly · 16/08/2021 18:12

God, I assumed you'd paid out hundreds. I never liked spending much on nights out at yiur age, but £40 would have been fine. Rather than feeling guilty maybe just allow yourself that spend once a month, it's really not that much in the scheme of things - as people said, do let yourself have fun, there's plenty of clear water between 'enjoying a nice night out occasionally' and 'being an irresponsible spendthrift who'll never buy a house'

CasaBonita · 16/08/2021 18:12

When I opened your post and saw the reference to 5 grand I initially thought you'd spent that! Which would be understandable.

For the sake of £40 - you need to try and unclench!

LaurieFairyCake · 16/08/2021 18:13

£40 !!!!

You're clearly not in London

I had 3 gin and tonics a few weeks ago and that was over £40

Give yourself a break, you've saved £5k Thanks

stevalnamechanger · 16/08/2021 18:14

I had one of those nights and spent £400 ... imagine that beer fear .

Let it go and potentially seek some kind of therapy to discuss your money anxieties

Notreallyhappy · 16/08/2021 18:15

£40!!! That's just a few beers.
Come on take it from an over 50 live a little

Basilandparsleyandmint · 16/08/2021 18:22

I thought you were going to say you had spent way more!
Give yourself a break and hope you had a great night 😊

Unfashionable · 16/08/2021 18:22

Crikey, OP, when I started reading your post I assumed you must have spent £4000 on a footballer-style champagne & Charlie bender, not £40 on a few shots.

£40 on a night out is nothing these days when a large G&T can cost a tenner in many places. You had a night out, that’s all, and we all need one of those occasionally.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/08/2021 18:25

@RJnomore1

How on earth did you go out, get drunk, buy OTHER people drinks and only spend £40?
That's what I was going to say! Tell us the secret OP!
TheSoapyFrog · 16/08/2021 18:25

I honestly thought you were going to say you spent a few hundred and I was totally going to sympathise because I've done that more times that i care to remember (and often I don't until I spy my bank balance). Don't beat yourself up about £40 on an entire night out. I'd have blown through that in an hour.

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 16/08/2021 18:26

Ah don't worry OP. I once went out and my bank account was not healthy the next day... I had managed to spend near on £600 on a single day/night out 😂👌🏻

Luckily I had the savings to cover it and I just moved on. I now no longer just take my card out I take about £100 cash for drinks and taxi.

But my god I was buying shots and champagne bottles with contactless all day. Me and my friends still laugh about the night out that coach thought she was a premiership footballer 😂😂

Boatonthehorizon · 16/08/2021 18:26

40 is barely one round! An expensive night out is more like 200

Pottedpalm · 16/08/2021 18:28

£40 bought two cocktails last time I was out 😂

mcmooberry · 16/08/2021 18:28

@CasaBonita I am lol at the idea that she might have spent the £5000 saved!
However, I thought it would be a LOT more than £40.

OP, you had fun, regrette rien!

Thekormachameleon · 16/08/2021 18:32

God I though this was going to say you'd spent a grand or something

40 quid, assuming it won't leave you hungry and homeless is not a lot to spend on a night out, especially if you're drunk and bought other people drinks

I went out for a 'quiet meal' a few weeks back and spent 240 quid, most of which was wine and cocktails BlushBlush

Fullodregret3728 · 16/08/2021 18:32

I literally would have a heart attack at the thought some of you have spent hundreds of pounds Grin I don't know what causes this money anxiety , Maybe it's self employment and the fact money is not consistent that causes the anxiety perhaps?

OP posts:
Littlekittyscupcake · 16/08/2021 18:32

It could have been a lot worse OP. Don’t let it get to you and chalk it up as experience.

BillMasheen · 16/08/2021 18:32

I accidentally blew £40 at the garden centre on Saturday.

Slightly miffed as I’ve had several very lean years, financially and this is the first time in a long time I’ve had anything like that kind of cash to spare.

Bloody gutted it was something so… middle aged though. In my head I am not middle aged.

IceLace100 · 16/08/2021 18:34

You haven't been out for 2 years and you spent £40 on booze.

Flipping heck love give yourself a break! You're young! I know you want a house but you've got to enjoy yourself!

£40 isn't that bad, it's not the end of the world.

Fullodregret3728 · 16/08/2021 18:34

My anxiety goes further than drinks though - bought 2 dresses from New Look last week - spent £30 - my brain's automatic reaction the next day is to go to New Look and return them - but I can't because Ive taken the label off hahaha,
I wish I could be more relaxed about spending money but I don't know how
