Spent so much on a night out - regret.

I'm 26 and trying to save for a deposit. I have £5000 saved so far
I don't usually drink. Haven't been out in 2 years. And only really drink in meals.

Went out with friends last night and I'm not sure if it's because I haven't had drink in a while but it really went to my head and I feel so embarrassed today after realising I was speaking to random people and I even bought a random woman a shot.
I wasn't even going to drink but after someone bought me a shot , I just kept buying more alcohol.
And I bought for other people too.

I just got so happy and jolly.
Checked my bank account, and I've spent £40. £40 that I didn't want to waste on alcohol.
Doesn't help I already have bad money anxiety.

I know I'm unreasonable to regret this but I just feel so much anxiety about how much I've spent after not drinking for 2 years.
I gave up alochol after hating who I become when drunk and I just feel so much regret and like I've reverted backwards.

I honestly thought when you said about the savings that you were going to say you'd blown a substantial amount of it. Like a PP the other week who's partner has meant their wedding had to be cancelled after he spent (or claimed he lost) hundreds on one night out. £40 honestly, while it's great you're saving and focussed, you're in your 20's and now is the time to let your heart down and enjoy yourself a little too before all the responsibilities life brings come along. I assume you enjoyed your evening at the time?

Dinosaurballoon · 16/08/2021 17:35

£40?? Thought you were going to say £500

ImAddictedToMyPhone · 16/08/2021 17:38

I once spent £150 but I reasoned that I'd only turn 30 once. 😁

You aren't doing it regularly so it's not a bad thing.

PalmsandCharms · 16/08/2021 17:38

Life's too short to not have the odd blowout. Please don't beat yourself up about it. £40 really is nothing in the grand scheme of things. I spent more than that on my last night out 🙈

fruitbrewhaha · 16/08/2021 17:39

Oh god, i thought you were going to say thousands buying everyone drinks at a club or something.

There's nothing wrong with buying some a drink. You do need to loosen up. If you've spent over your weekly budget then claw back a bit next week. It sounds like you've not spent any money for a year so £40 is not bad.

liveforsummer · 16/08/2021 17:39

£40 is 3 drinks up here

Also this. Lucky if you can buy one round here with £40 😆

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 16/08/2021 17:40

£40 isn’t too bad. I once spent £200 and didn’t realise until the next morning when DH woke me up asking if someone had nicked my bank card as he’d seen a load of transactions in different bars. Blush £50 of that was at a restaurant, £20 was money I took out for a cab. Fuck knows about the rest. It all went on cocktails and shots and I had the hangover from hell.

I also know someone who went on their stag and was rinsed of £2k in a strip club. Kept buying drinks for the strippers. Moron.

CambsAlways · 16/08/2021 17:40

Bloody hell 40 pound I thought you was going to say you spent a lot more, give yourself a break, you are young, hope you had a good night

Jerseygirl12 · 16/08/2021 17:41

You sound more sensible than me, last week I went out, spent £160 and chucked up all the next day. I’m 52!

honeybuns007 · 16/08/2021 17:42

I thought you were going to say £800 or something like that. £40? If this is a big spend for you then well done for saving £5000. You are doing really well.

acolderwar · 16/08/2021 17:42

You could have spent £40 just on a taxi home even without drinks, chill.

AngryWhompingWillow · 16/08/2021 17:45

I don't think £40 is that much tbh. For a night out. I was expecting you to have spent £250-£300 or something!

Don't beat yourself up @Fullodregret3728 You are only 26. Live your best life while you're young, before you're tied down with a mortgage and a family.

putthebinsout · 16/08/2021 17:46

I thought you were going to say several hundred! £40?! That would barely cover the taxi and first round. Where were you drinking? I'm going to get myself down there!

MistyFrequencies · 16/08/2021 17:46

Jesus. I spent €500 last time I properly lost the run of myself. You're absolutely fine. Don't beat yourself up. You've done well saving as much as you have so far.

Libraryghost · 16/08/2021 17:47

It wasn’t a waste of money though was it? You lived! You had a great time! We all have to let our hair down sometimes and especially so when you are young. Give yourself a break. You have done so well and it’s important to still have some fun now and again x

Standrewsschool · 16/08/2021 17:49

Try to put it down to experience. You had a night out, it was a one-off.

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2021 17:49

OP, I was with my sister once when age opened her bank statement. She was outraged at lots of transactions to various bars around central London on a particular evening , and was ranting about it as she rang up the bank to report fraudulent use of her card. She told the bank person “I would have remembers that date, it’s Anna’s birthday….. ah..,, yes….. Anna’s birthday…. Ok then, that’s all fine, bye”.

Summersun2020 · 16/08/2021 17:51

£40?!! Wow, dramatic much??
You’re going to be old one day and regret penny pinching. Live your life, the odd night out is worth it

TheOrigRights · 16/08/2021 17:53

6 drinks - £40, which includes drinks for other people and for you (quote: I kept buying more alcohol).

It really can't have been so bad.

user1471538283 · 16/08/2021 17:53

I get it OP but you are young, it's been a rough time and you need to have some fun! £40 isnt that bad.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 16/08/2021 17:56

£40 ? Jeez I thought you were going to say £1k+

£40 at current bar prices wouldn't see me through a proper evening out with food and drinks ! Dh spends more that that going down the pub with his mates.

Sunbird24 · 16/08/2021 17:57

So it turns out that £40 is the equivalent of about 5p a day for the last two years that you’ve not been drinking or going out. Is that 5p a day easier to forgive yourself than £40?
You’ve done really well saving as much as you have, what you spent last night hasn’t even made a dent in that, and it sounds like you had a good time. Don’t beat yourself up.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/08/2021 18:02

Bloody hell, £40 is nothing. I spend way more than that on a night out and I eat and drink out fairly regularly. It's fine as a one off.

hardyloveit · 16/08/2021 18:05

Christ..... when I was reading your post op I thought you were gonna say £100s. £40 is a cheap night. Relax. You had fun! Just move on

Fullodregret3728 · 16/08/2021 18:05

Ah this has just made me realise I need to sort my anxiety out. I'm clearly not normal in worrying about every single penny spent Grin
