To think Joe Biden is an even worse president than Trump?

I realise Trump was appalling in many ways so this isn't a pro-Trump post really, and I know he was the one who put things in motion for the withdrawal from Afghanistan. But to pull out in such a sudden and shambolic way will without doubt be the direct cause of many deaths and other atrocities in Afghanistan, including the deaths of those who helped the US and other forces. I think it's utterly unforgivable. Can't think of anything Trump did with quite such immediate and devastating consequences. AIBU?

I've googled the term speech impediment derza and it seems to still be a generally accepted term and I can't find anything to say that it is an offensive term. Given that I don't see how we are supposed to know that it is wrong to use it.

I'm happy to use another term for it, but you could have just said so nicely and not suggest that people are ignorant dinosaurs for using it. You didn't even say in your post which words we should be using, which isn't exactly helpful and sounds more like having a go.

knittingaddict · 27/08/2021 10:06

Yes I used stutter/stammer already, which I know is the same thing. So what is the correct term for things like stammers? One that covers all things like that? One that isn't impediment?

LINABE · 27/08/2021 10:10

@Wheretoeattweenandteen

We didn't have to announce a mass exodus, people had already been leaving in dribs and drabs, Australia pulled out months ago?

How dare Biden deny the right of American helper the chance to decide to go because the president, a knowingly corrupt self serving arse hole said it would cause a crisis of confidence.

There was a list supposed to be drawn up in April of those who helped Americans and apparently it wasn't done.

Passport of afghan helpers have been burned in the embassy! That smoke we saw was their hopes and lives.

Now they don't know they name of many assistants.

Biden wouldn't talk to Johnson for 36 hours I've just learned. This is the end of trust, working together... Biden smashing it. His generals at the briefings look shit scared!!

I'm struggling to take in the mess. Basically they should have kept enough troops there to immediately secure the airport in a worst case scenario and pushed evacuation and had lists done, paper work mostly done in case...

Stammering is a neurological condition which is quite separate from articulation difficulties and phonological delays and disorders. There is no umbrella term which is used by SALTs and other health professionals. stamma.org/
knittingaddict · 27/08/2021 12:00

But stammering is included under the heading of speech disorder, another term for speech impediment, so why not use disorder or is there something else that is acceptable?

So it is a speech disorder?

I'm honestly not being difficult about this and I do want to understand.

It's interesting that the US Acting Ambassador is a Trump appointee as of 2 days before Biden's Inauguration, as the previous one left the same month.

I do wonder why Biden didn't speak to Boris Johnson, and it seems other leaders, for 36 hours. It is suggested that he had been sitting idly while "Rome burned", but I find this hard to believe, although it is, of course, possible. I find it more likely that a normal President will have been in constant communication with the military and intelligence, and his advisers, even if the result is as bad as it is.

Aspiringmatriarch · 27/08/2021 12:39

But, and you may not have noticed, but there were lots of people questioning his fitness from the start. All GOP pundits and certain, let's say, "internet influencers". It's not new.

@Lweji Sure, but I don't think that really says much one way or the other about its truthfulness - it's not likely to be coming from Democrat supporters, either way. Opponents said the same about Trump - who probably does have some kind of personality disorder IMO.

I think the main problem for the western governments involved in Afghanistan over the deadline was that they weren't getting their Afghan allies and vulnerable people out in time, when they've had years to do so. All US presidents and most western leaders are to blame.

To say nothing of going in to Afghanistan. A bit of history might have helped. And we forget that the west supported the Mujahedeen as a way of getting rid of Russian domination.

I don't think any of his Democrat opponents claimed he was senile during the primaries, either.
The criticism of Biden by GOP seems to have been in response from all the claims (fairly accurate) about Trump. From the same people who considered Obama's tan suit the worst scandal since Watergate (or close). And claimed Hillary was the worst person on earth.

True.

Biden, not the best, but rather the most electable against Trump, which already says a lot.

Sadly, though, the presidential election rests in the hands of a few swing states. Direct elections would be much easier to win by someone who might actually be closer to the best America has to offer, even if that person was a woman.

Biden and Trump aren't their best, but those who are probably wouldn't go into politics no matter what the inducement

Polkadots2021 · 27/08/2021 17:38

@MopaniTree

I read so much criticism of Trump but when it comes down to it, what did he actually do that was materially so awful?

I think Biden comes across as more "Presidential" but in fact his actions in the short time since coming into office have had an awful impact on women's rights and now on Afghanistan.

Is this a joke?

Trump would have been even scarier _ he’d have built a walk round the Afghan interpreters and their families, withdrawn the planes and started ranting his usual racist diatribes about illegal immigrants! Trump showed no compassion for anybody and contempt for most!

Petardos · 27/08/2021 18:50

Biden has shown he has not compassion with his actions. This is what I find infuriating the double standards. He is far from a saviour. He is a con.

Jorriss · 27/08/2021 19:16

He is far from a saviour. He is a con.

Absolutely this.

ddl1 · 27/08/2021 22:52

No. On some issues, notably Afghanistan, there seems unfortunately to be no difference between the two, and Biden is just following his predecessor's policies. On some, he is significantly better. Like many presidents, he seems considerably better on domestic than foreign policy issues.

There is a tendency for British people to compare Johnson and the Tories with Trump. They are bad enough, but they are not nearly as bad as Trump. They are much more like Biden. The American system is skewed way to the right of most other Western democracies.

Rainbowqueeen · 27/08/2021 23:29

I have heard some American commentators say that many of the Afghan people who could have left did not want to go. And that makes sense to me. There was a government in place, the army had been trained and supplied, life was better. They assumed that things would continue as they were and that their country could stand against the taliban. So why leave??

Clearly it didn’t turn out that way. And what is happening now is terrible.
